Background: Sexual minority females have higher rates of cigarette smoking than heterosexual females. Additionally, menthol cigarette use disproportionately impacts minority smokers, including sexual minority individuals. This study examined differences between sexual minority and heterosexual females on several smoking variables, including initiation with a menthol cigarette, and past 30-day cigarette and menthol cigarette use.

Introduction: Existing research on media examining the news content related to Tobacco 21 (T21) predate the adoption of most T21 laws. This study examined the discussion of T21 laws in top-circulating print media sources in the United States between 2012 and 2020.
Aims And Methods: Systematic database searches using Access World News and Factiva identified T21-related news articles appearing in the top daily circulating newspapers in each state between January 2012 and December 2020 (n = 586 articles).

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has developed a regulatory process by which tobacco companies can apply to make "modified risk tobacco product" (MRTP) marketing claims that their product poses a lower risk of disease or exposure to harmful constituents. The impact of MRTP claims to promote harm reduction may be limited by perceptions that claims come from the tobacco industry, lack of attention, and the simultaneous presence of health warnings on ads, which may be perceived as conflicting information. Some studies have examined the potential of alternative "modified risk warnings".

We expected our usually high response rates to fall in the 2021 iteration of the survey due to challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic and our inability to offer all participants a $50 upfront incentive as we had previously. To understand the independent impacts of the lower incentive and surveying physicians in the context of the pandemic, we fielded an experiment varying the incentive amount physicians were offered.

Introduction: People believe that cigarettes using 'organic,' 'additive-free' or similar descriptors are less harmful than other cigarettes. Natural American Spirit (NAS) is the most popular US cigarette brand using these descriptors. This cohort study describes changes in US smokers' odds of preferring NAS and changes in NAS smokers' odds of believing their brand might be less harmful than other brands.

The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated a rapid transformation in healthcare delivery. Ambulatory care abruptly shifted from in-person to telehealth visits with providers using digital video and audio tools to reach patients at home. Advantages to telehealth care include enhanced patient convenience and provider efficiencies, but financial, geographic, privacy, and access barriers to telehealth also exist.

Objective: Tobacco use remains disproportionately common among adults with internalizing problems. The rising prevalence of flavored tobacco use among this population may be a contributing factor. Using data from Wave 4 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study, this study examined differences across adult ever tobacco users by severity of internalizing problems, in initiation of tobacco use with a flavored product and past 30-day (current) flavored tobacco use (n = 27,425).

Objectives: We report the continued availability of flavored cigars based on our analysis of discarded cigar wrappers collected in February 2019, after a partial flavor ban in Oakland, CA.
Methods: We collected 1,501 discarded cigar wrappers in a stratified random sample of census tracts (n = 15). Collected packages were cleaned, photographed, and coded for product type, brand name, pack size, flavor descriptor, and pricing details.

Introduction: News media can shape public perceptions about e-cigarettes, particularly in the context of ongoing uncertainty from the recent outbreak of e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI). This study aimed to characterize news articles published about e-cigarettes in 2019, including before and during the EVALI outbreak.
Aims And Methods: Using 24 e-cigarette-related search terms, we gathered all articles published in leading print and online U.

Objective: To systematically review the literature regarding responses to commercial and public health marketing features for reduced nicotine cigarettes (RNCs) to anticipate potential industry and regulatory actions should an RNC product standard be issued.
Data Sources: We searched PubMed for English-language articles using several keywords for reduced nicotine products, cigarettes and marketing features published through 2020.
Study Selection: Of 4092 records, 26 studies were retained for review that met criteria focusing on responses to RNC marketing features.

Objective: Previous research has highlighted the role of cognitive and affective mediators in facilitating the effectiveness of pictorial warning labels (PWLs). This study examines smokers' responses towards PWLs after 10 days of use and their associations with changes in quitting attitudes, beliefs, and intentions during this period.
Methods: Non-treatment-seeking, daily smokers completed a randomized, parallel design trial.

Introduction: Physicians play a critical role in tobacco treatment, being a frequent link to smokers and a trusted source of information. Unfortunately, barriers exist that limit physicians' implementation of evidence-based interventions. We conducted a survey experiment among US physicians to evaluate whether question wording impacted perceptions about the health effects of nicotine. 926 physicians were randomized to receive one of two versions of a question matrix that asked about the "extent to which they agree or disagree that 'nicotine' (Version 1) or 'nicotine, on its own,' (Version 2) directly contributes to" birth defects, cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, depression, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We evaluated whether question condition predicted strong agreement and/or agreement with each statement, and assessed demographic correlates of each outcome while adjusting for question version.

Introduction: Cigarette smoking is disproportionately common among sexual minorities. While menthol market share has increased in the past decade, research on menthol cigarette smoking among sexual minorities is scant. For this study, we examined menthol cigarette smoking in the United States, by sex and sexual identity using a nationally representative sample of adults.

Pack size is an important pricing strategy for the tobacco industry, but there is limited data on how users differ based on preferred pack size for cigar products. Using data from Wave 4 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study, this study identified differences in adult cigar user characteristics based on pack size purchasing behavior among users of a top cigar brand, Black and Mild. Weighted chi-square tests were used to examine the associations between Black and Mild pack size and sociodemographic, cigar and other substance use characteristics.

Despite the recent push for Tobacco 21 legislation in the US and the national adoption of Tobacco 21, there is a paucity of data on the process of policy adoption. To explore the key factors that served as facilitators or challenges to the passage of state T21 laws that apply to the sale of all tobacco products to anyone under 21 years of age, we conducted a comparative, cross-case study in ten states that adopted Tobacco 21 between 2016 and 2019. Stakeholders from selected states were identified via snowball sampling, and interviews were conducted from November 2018 to March 2020.

Introduction: Nicotine in e-cigarettes typically is labeled as mg/ml or percent nicotine, but these metrics may be difficult to understand. We examined whether adults who use e-cigarettes accurately can compare nicotine concentrations presented as mg/ml and percent and/or can identify the strength of concentrations presented using these metrics.
Methods: 310 adults completed an online survey in 2020.

Research demonstrates that characteristics of cigarette packaging influence consumer product perceptions, yet the current literature on the impact of cigar packaging is limited. This study aims to examine how different cigarillo packaging features influence young adult cigar smokers' perceptions. In 2016, we recruited past-year cigar users aged 18-34 from Amazon Mechanical Turk (N = 1260).

Objectives: The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued new requirements to strengthen and increase the size of cigar warnings. Although these requirements were challenged in court by the cigar industry, and later struck down, cigar manufacturers had the option of voluntarily complying during the injunction. In this study, we examined voluntary warning compliance on a sample of discarded cigar wrappers.

Introduction: Research is needed to determine the impact of marketing on perceptions and use of reduced nicotine content (RNC) cigarettes, particularly as US regulators have permitted the sale of an RNC cigarette modified risk tobacco product (MRTP) that seeks further authorisation to advertise using modified risk claims. This study examined the effects of two advertising elements (product name and disclaimer content) on perceptions of an RNC cigarette MRTP.
