Spontaneous bleeding into soft tissues was a common complication of anticoagulant therapy among critically ill patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study sought to evaluate the impact of different treatment methods on survival among COVID-19 patients with active or self-resolved spontaneous bleeding into soft tissues. Methods used to treat CT-confirmed spontaneous hematomas in COVID-19 patients included nonoperative management (NOM), angiography (AG) with transarterial embolization (TAE) and open surgery (OS).

A multi-component method for the synthesis of pyrimido[5,4-]azolo[1,5-]pyrimidines and pyrimido[4,5-][1,2,4]triazolo[5,1-][1,2,4]triazines has been developed. It was shown that vicinal amino-nitrile and amino-ethoxycarbonyl derivatives of azolo[1,5-]pyrimidines and azolo[5,1-][1,2,4]triazines were converted to tricyclic heterocycles in the "AcOH-RC(OEt)-amine" system. Reaction conditions were optimized, patterns of this process were investigated, and intermediates were isolated.

A wealth of details regarding an individual's state of health, like a person's respiratory and metabolic functioning, can be studied by analyzing the volatile molecules and atoms in human exhaled breath. Besides, the salinity of seawater is a crucial factor in understanding its characteristics because any variation in the salinity of seawater represents the variations in the hydrological, biological, and chemical distributions. In this paper, a symmetrical one-dimensional phononic structure is theoretically designed using two symmetrical crystals separated with a defective cavity.

Polariton lattices as binarized neuromorphic networks.

Light Sci Appl

January 2025

Spin-Optics laboratory, St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg, 198504, Russia.

We introduce a novel neuromorphic network architecture based on a lattice of exciton-polariton condensates, intricately interconnected and energized through nonresonant optical pumping. The network employs a binary framework, where each neuron, facilitated by the spatial coherence of pairwise coupled condensates, performs binary operations. This coherence, emerging from the ballistic propagation of polaritons, ensures efficient, network-wide communication.

Structural and photoelectric properties of p-i-n photodiodes based on GeSiSn/Si multiple quantum dots both on Si and silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrates were investigated. Elastic strained state of grown films was demonstrated by x-ray diffractometry. Annealing of p-i-n structures before the mesa fabrication can improve the ideality factor of current-voltage characteristics.

Introduction: Liquid biopsies have great potential for precision medicine as they provide information about primary and metastatic tumors using minimally invasive techniques. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are promising biomarkers for detecting gastric cancer (GC). The aim of the study was to identify miR molecules associated with autophagy in gastric cancer (GC) cells, determine their expression levels in GC and FLOT-treated patients, and assess the efficacy of FLOT therapy in GC patients.

The crystal structure determines the properties of compounds and materials, although one can find simple yet industrially relevant compounds such as potassium acetate (KOAc) and its hydrates for which the properties and even the composition still remain misunderstood, owing to the lack of structural data. In this study, the crystal structures of KOAc polymorphs and hydrates were determined for the first time. The water content in the crystal hydrates was reliably determined revealing two new phases 3KOAc·2HO and KOAc·HO ( = 0.

Currently, biopolymer-based Zn-containing nanoforms are of great interest for medical applications. However, there is lack information on optimal synthesis parameters, reagents and stabilizing agent for production of zinc carbonate nanoparticles (ZnC-NPs). In this work, synthesis of ZnC-NPs was carried out by chemical precipitation with the use of chitosan, hydroxyethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose and hyaluronic acid as stabilizing agents.

Parkinson's disease (PD), a neurodegenerative disorder without cure, is characterized by the pathological aggregation of α-synuclein (α-Syn) in Lewy bodies. Classic deposition pathway and condensation pathway contribute to α-Syn aggregation, and liquid-liquid phase separation is the driving force for condensate formation, which subsequently undergo liquid-solid phase separation to form toxic fibrils. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a long history in treating neurodegenerative disease, herein; we identified chemicals from herbs that inhibit α-Syn aggregation.

Introduction: Folate receptors (FR) have been considered a convenient target for different radiopharmaceuticals in recent years. Multifarious Ga-labeled folate conjugates have been proposed as promising agents for the PET imaging of FR-overexpressing malignant neoplasms. In addition, radiolabeled folate-based conjugates can be effective for imaging non-tumor pathological foci characterized by a pronounced cluster of activated macrophages.

Liquid crystals (LC) are widely used in various optical devices due to their birefringence, dielectric anisotropy, and responsive behavior to external fields. Enhancing the properties of existing LCs through doping with nanoparticles, including semiconductor quantum dots, offers a promising route for improving their performance. Among various nanoparticles, QDs stand out for their high charge mobility, sensitivity in the near-infrared spectral region, and cost-effectiveness.

Growth of lithium whiskers or dendrites is the major obstacle towards safe and stable utilization of lithium metal anodes in rechargeable batteries. In this study, we look deeper into the mechanism of lithium electrodeposition. We find that before lithium whisker or dendrite nucleation occurs, lithium is deposited into the grain boundaries of the metal electrode, which we directly observed in the focused ion beam cross-sections of the lithium electrode.

Upgrade of Weak σ-hole Bond Donors via Cr(CO)3 Complexation.

Chemistry

January 2025

Politecnico di Milano, Department of Chemistry, Materials, Chemical Engineer., via Mancinelli 7, 20131, Milan, ITALY.

Molecular recognition mediated by s-hole interactions is enhanced as the electrostatic potential at the σ-hole becomes increasingly positive. Traditional methods to strengthen σ-hole donor ability of atoms such as halogens often involve covalent modifications, such as, introducing electron-withdrawing substituents (neutral or positively charged) or electrochemical oxidation. Metal coordination, a relatively underexplored approach, offers a promising alternative.

Chimera states in a system of stationary and flying-through deterministic particles with an internal degree of freedom.

Chaos

January 2025

Department of Control Theory, Scientific and Educational Mathematical Center "Mathematics of Future Technologies", Nizhny Novgorod State University, Gagarin Av. 23, Nizhny Novgorod 603022, Russia.

We consider the effect of the emergence of chimera states in a system of coexisting stationary and flying-through in potential particles with an internal degree of freedom determined by the phase. All particles tend to an equilibrium state with a small number of potential wells, which leads to the emergence of a stationary chimera. An increase in the number of potential wells leads to the emergence of particles flying-through along the medium, the phases of which form a moving chimera.

Recent advancements in genomics, propelled by artificial intelligence, have unlocked unprecedented capabilities in interpreting genomic sequences, mitigating the need for exhaustive experimental analysis of complex, intertwined molecular processes inherent in DNA function. A significant challenge, however, resides in accurately decoding genomic sequences, which inherently involves comprehending rich contextual information dispersed across thousands of nucleotides. To address this need, we introduce GENA language model (GENA-LM), a suite of transformer-based foundational DNA language models capable of handling input lengths up to 36 000 base pairs.
