Resonant pumping of the electronic f-f transitions in the orbital multiplet of dysprosium ions (Dy^{3+}) in a complex perovskite DyFeO_{3} is shown to impulsively launch THz lattice dynamics corresponding to the B_{2g} phonon mode, which is dominanted by the motion of Dy^{3+} ions. The findings, supported by symmetry analysis and density-functional theory calculations, not only provide a novel route for highly selective excitation of the rare-earth crystal lattices but also establish important relationships between the symmetry of the electronic and lattice excitations in complex oxides.

All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) with a garnet-type solid electrolyte have been considered promising alternatives to traditional batteries with a liquid organic electrolyte, due to their enhanced safety and ability to accommodate high energy density electrodes. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation of the high-temperature chemical compatibility between the garnet-like LiGaLaZrO (Ga-LLZO) electrolyte and high-energy-density Li-rich layered LiNiMnO cathode (LNM). Our findings suggest that a high temperature reaction between the Li-rich cathode and Ga-LLZO occurs at 700-900C depending on the form of reactants.

Stages and causes of the evolution of language and consciousness: a theoretical reconstruction.

Biosystems

December 2024

Institute of Philosophy and Law, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk, Russia; Department of International Relations and Regional Studies, Novosibirsk State Technical University, Novosibirsk, Russia.

This article presents a refinement of theoretical explanations of the main stages of linguistic and cognitive evolution in anthropogenesis. The concepts of language, consciousness, self-consciousness, the self, the unconscious, the subconscious, and the relation between free will and determinism remain at the center of active and complex debates in philosophy and neuroscience. A basic theoretical apparatus comprising the central concepts of "concern" and "providing structure" (an extension of the biological concept of "adaptation") develops the paradigm of the extended evolutionary synthesis.

Inorg Chem

January 2025

Beijing National Laboratory for Condensed Matter Physics, Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100190, China.

CaCuFeReO and LaCuFeReO quadruple perovskite oxides are well known for their high ferrimagnetic Curie temperatures and half-metallic electronic structures. By A-site chemical substitution with lower valence state Na, an isostructural compound NaCuFeReO with both A- and B-site ordered quadruple perovskite structures in -3 symmetry was prepared using high-pressure and high-temperature techniques. The X-ray absorption study demonstrates the valence states to be Cu, Fe, and Re.

We developed a technique allowing the direct observation of photoinduced charge-transfer states (CTSs)-the weakly coupled electron-hole pairs preceding the completely separated charges in organic photovoltaic (OPV) blends. Quadrature detection of the electron spin echo (ESE) signal enables the observation of an out-of-phase ESE signal of CTS. The out-of-phase Electron-Electron Double Resonance (ELDOR) allows measuring electron-hole distance distributions within CTS and its temporal evolution in the microsecond range.

This paper deals with the trapping of a particle diffusing in a cylindrical cavity by two circular absorbing spots of arbitrary radii located in the centers of the cavity bases. The focus is on the mean particle lifetime, which is its mean first-passage time to one of the spots. When the spots are small and their radii are well below the cavity radius, this time can be analyzed using the narrow escape (NE) theory, which describes it as a function of the spot radii and the only parameter of the cavity, its volume, independent of the cavity shape and the particle initial position.
