We developed a technique allowing the direct observation of photoinduced charge-transfer states (CTSs)-the weakly coupled electron-hole pairs preceding the completely separated charges in organic photovoltaic (OPV) blends. Quadrature detection of the electron spin echo (ESE) signal enables the observation of an out-of-phase ESE signal of CTS. The out-of-phase Electron-Electron Double Resonance (ELDOR) allows measuring electron-hole distance distributions within CTS and its temporal evolution in the microsecond range.

This paper deals with the trapping of a particle diffusing in a cylindrical cavity by two circular absorbing spots of arbitrary radii located in the centers of the cavity bases. The focus is on the mean particle lifetime, which is its mean first-passage time to one of the spots. When the spots are small and their radii are well below the cavity radius, this time can be analyzed using the narrow escape (NE) theory, which describes it as a function of the spot radii and the only parameter of the cavity, its volume, independent of the cavity shape and the particle initial position.

Terminal Schwann cells (TSCs) are capable of regulating acetylcholine (ACh) release at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ). We have identified GABA as a gliotransmitter at mouse NMJs. When ACh activates α7 nicotinic ACh receptor (nAChRs) on TSCs, GABA is released and activates GABA receptors on the nerve terminal that subsequently reduce ACh release.

An empirical equation relating electrophoretic mobility and ionic strength was proposed. The equation includes a number of parameters that are found using the mobilities of reference ions: two coefficients in the numerator describing the linear relationship of the multiplier in front of the square root of the ionic strength with the product of the ion mobility in the background electrolyte (BGE) without additives by the modulus of the charge number, raised to a certain power, and also the multiplier in the denominator before the square root of the ionic strength. The proposed equation was tested using the mobilities measured in BGEs with the addition of sodium chloride to adjust ionic strength and sulfated β-cyclodextrin (S-β-CD) for 11 anions with charge numbers from -1 to -4.

Infections caused by gram-negative pathogens continue to be a major risk to human health because of the innate antibiotic resistance endowed by their unique cell membrane architecture. Nature has developed an elegant solution to target gram-negative strains, namely by conjugating toxic antibiotic warheads to a suitable carrier to facilitate the active import of the drug to a specific target organism. Microcin C7 (McC) is a Trojan horse peptide-conjugated antibiotic that specifically targets enterobacteria by exploiting active import through oligopeptide transport systems.

Ultrastructural Remodeling of Cardiomyocytes in Postinfarction Myocardium of Rats in the Late Stages of the Disease.

Cytometry A

December 2024

Laboratory of Hyperspectral Imaging of Surgical Targets, Center of Excellence, L.A. Orbeli Institute of Physiology, National Academy of Sciences, Yerevan, Armenia.

Identifying factors that contribute to the transition to the dilated phase in cardiac ischemia is a critical challenge in heart failure treatment. Currently, no effective therapies exist for this ischemic complication, and the mechanisms driving left ventricular dilatation during chronic post-infarction remodeling remain poorly understood. One potential pathological process leading to ventricular dilatation involves specific compensatory rearrangements in the border zone adjacent to the infarct, which isolates the intact myocardium from inflammation at the scar edge.

Identifying the scaling rules describing ecological patterns across time and space is a central challenge in ecology. Taylor's law of fluctuation scaling, which states that the variance of a population's size or density is proportional to a positive power of the mean size or density, has been widely observed in population dynamics and characterizes variability in multiple scientific domains. However, it is unclear if this phenomenon accurately describes ecological patterns across many orders of magnitude in time, and therefore links otherwise disparate observations.
