Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with radial scanning, images of intact rat lungs and rat lungs with pulmonary hypertension were obtained. The retrospective gating method was applied to construct images of rat lungs during inspiration and expiration phases. Lung volumes at both respiratory phases, relative tidal volume, and the percentage of lung lesions were calculated.

Changes in the lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, adipokines, and growth factors during the development of metabolic disorders were studied in three mouse models: C57BL/6 (alimentary obesity), db/db (leptin-resistant obesity), and NOD (diabetes mellitus) lines. In the group of alimentary obesity, moderate fatty infiltration of the liver and hypertrophy of the adipose tissue, hyperglycemia, and increased concentrations of adiponectin, transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1), leptin, and cholesterol were detected. In the group of leptin-resistant obesity, multiple pathological changes in tissues, severe hyperglycemia and hyperleptinemia, hyperinsulinemia, and reduced concentrations of triglycerides, adiponectin, myostatin, and TGF-β1 were detected.

It was previously found that the severity of LPS-induced systemic inflammatory response (SIRS) in rats is determined by resistance to hypoxia and the level of Hif1a expression. Individual differences in the level of Hif1a and NFkb expression in the liver were studied in relation to the severity of inflammatory and immune reactions in LPS-induced SIRS in rats without previous placement in a ventilated decompression chamber. During the early periods after SIRS modeling, rats with high expression of the Hif1a and NFkb genes associated with increased expression of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines are identified.

Programmed cell death (apoptosis) is essential part of the process of tissue regeneration that also plays role in the mechanism of pathology. The phenomenon of fast and transient permeability of mitochondrial membranes by various triggers, known as permeability transition pore (mPTP) leads to the release of proapoptotic proteins and acts as an initial step in initiation of apoptosis. However, a role for mPTP was also suggested for physiology and it is unclear if there is a threshold in number of mitochondria with mPTP which induces cell death and how this mechanism is regulated in different tissues.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of acute lower respiratory infections in babies across the world. Irrespective of progress in the development of RSV vaccines, effective small molecule drugs are still not available on the market. Based on our previous data we designed and synthesized triazole-linked coumarin-monoterpene hybrids and showed that they are indeed effective in inhibiting the RSV replication.

The combined use of lytic bacteriophages with antibiotics is currently being explored as a strategy to enhance the effectiveness of infectious disease therapies, including those caused by . In this study, we investigated the synergistic potential of bacteriophage vB_SauM-515A1 ( family) and the first-line antibiotic linezolid against the methicillin-resistant strain SA0413Rev. A checkerboard assay revealed a significant synergistic effect against planktonic cells (FIC = 0.

Electrolytic glucose oxidation has garnered great interest in energy-saving hydrogen generation. However, high charge-transfer resistance and inefficient active centers have been recognized as the primary issues for poor electrochemical performance. In this study, for the first time, we offer a novel defect-rich CeO /β-Ni(OH) composite nanosheet-decorated Ni foam electrocatalyst (denoted as Ce@NF-GA), synthesized a unique hydrothermal approach under the co-participation of glycerol and acetic acid.

Background: There is a lack of information on the current healthcare systems for children with kidney diseases across Europe. The aim of this study was to explore the different national approaches to the organization and delivery of pediatric nephrology services within Europe.

Methods: In 2020, the European society for Paediatric Nephrology (ESPN) conducted a cross-sectional survey to identify the existing pediatric nephrology healthcare systems in 48 European countries covering a population of more than 200 million children.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) show great potential for therapeutic delivery to human cells, with a focus on modulating immune responses. The most promising targets for inducing humoral and cellular immunity against a specific antigen are macrophages (Mϕs) and dendritic cells (DCs). Targeting mannose receptors (CD206), which are highly expressed on these antigen-presenting cells, to promote the presentation of specific antigens through EV-mediated uptake, is a promising strategy in clinical immunotherapy.

Investigating the effect of geopolitical risk on defense companies' stock returns.

Heliyon

December 2024

Department of Engineering and Industrial Management, Transilvania University of Brașov, Brașov, Romania.

This study examines the influence of geopolitical risk (GPR) on the stock returns of 75 global representative defense companies. Our argument is based on the premise that the Crimean Peninsula's 2014 annexation was a turning point for the defense industry. The study uses wavelet coherence and phase differences to examine daily datasets spanning from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2023.

Synthetic hydroxyapatite (HA) materials with antibacterial and biocompatible properties have potential for biomedical applications. The application of various computational methods is highly relevant for the optimal development of modern materials. In this work, we used molecular docking to determine the binding constants of tetracycline (TET) and quercetin (QUE) with hydroxyapatite and compared them to experimental data of the adsorption of tetracycline (TET) and quercetin (QUE) on the HA surface.

To identify the incidence of injury time-out due to field injuries in highest level professional football (soccer) international tournaments and to compare the features of these incidents between men's and women's football. The incidence of stoppage time due to incidents and the resulting injury characteristics of professional football players participating in the 2018 FIFA Men's World Cup (MWC) in Russia and the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup (WWC) in France were examined retrospectively through video analysis. In the 2018 MWC, a total of 123 injury time-outs with 132 treatments occurred in 64 matches, while in the 2019 WWC, 142 incidents with 150 injured players were recorded in 52 matches.

Metronidazole (MNZ) is one of the most commonly used antibiotics in the food industry. High levels in food can lead to the development of antimicrobial resistance in humans, so it is important to monitor its levels in food. In the context of legal proceedings, it is frequently necessary to re-examine samples after an extended period of time.

Introduction: Despite a scarcity of data, before 2022 Ukraine was already considered a high-prevalence country for carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE), and the situation has dramatically worsened during the full-scale war with Russia. The aim of this study was to analyse CPEs isolated in Poland from victims of war in Ukraine.

Methods: The study included 65 CPE isolates from March 2022 till February 2023, recovered in 36 Polish medical centres from 57 patients arriving from Ukraine, differing largely by age and reason for hospitalisation.

Here, we report a synthesis of fluoroquinolones carrying a monoterpene moiety at the C7 position of aromatic structure. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of fluoroquinolone fused with trans-3-hydroxy-cis-myrtanylamine 18 against Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA isolates) were two- to eightfold lower compared to moxifloxacin, although fourfold higher against MRSA isolates. The fluoroquinolone fused with (-)-nopylamine 16 was four- to eightfold less active on MSSA compared to moxifloxacin, while had similar activity on MRSA.

The content of 39 metals and metalloids (MMs) in submicron road dust (PM fraction) was studied in the traffic zone, residential courtyards with parking lots, and on pedestrian roads in parks in Moscow. The geochemical profiles of PM vary slightly between different types of roads and courtyards but differ significantly from those in parks. In Moscow, compared to other cities worldwide, submicron road dust contains less As, Sb, Mo, Cr, Cd, Sn, Tl, Ca, Rb, La, Y, U, but more Cu, Zn, Co, Fe, Mn, Ti, Zr, Al, V.
