Background: It remains unknown how timing of preoperative intra-articular knee hyaluronic acid (HA) injections impacts risk for developing postoperative periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) following total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
Methods: The PearlDiver Mariner database was utilized to identified patients undergoing primary TKA between 2015 and 2022 who received an HA injection without a corticosteroid injection within 12 months prior to surgery. The HA cohort was matched 1:1 to a control cohort undergoing no preoperative injections (corticosteroid or HA).

Background: Males are underrepresented in behavioral clinical trials of lifestyle. The aim of this exploratory study was to investigate factors associated with trial interest in males at different stages of recruitment and overall, into a multi-site behavioral trial targeting lifestyle change and remission of the metabolic syndrome. Similar analyses were performed for female participation to investigate the uniqueness or consistency with the findings for males.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a painful degenerative joint disease and a leading source of years lived with disability globally due to inadequate treatment options. Neuroimmune interactions reportedly contribute to OA pain pathogenesis. Notably, in rodents, macrophages in the DRG are associated with onset of persistent OA pain.

Stigmatizing language used by healthcare workers can transmit bias to others within healthcare, including medical trainees. This study investigates how stigmatizing language and undergraduate medical education (UME) curricula may influence trainees' clinical decision-making for patients with SUD.

Objective: Evaluate the safety and effectiveness of FDA-approved adjunctive vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in patients with marked TRD.
Methods: This 12-month, multicenter, double-blind, sham-controlled trial included 493 adults with marked treatment-resistant major depression who were randomized to active or no-stimulation sham VNS for 12 months.

Purpose: The Evidence-Based Practice Committee of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand set out to assess the membership's practice patterns (PPs) and familiarity with evidence-based principles for scaphoid fracture and nonunion management.
Methods: Using a consensus-generated 25-item online survey, all the American Society for Surgery of the Hand members were invited to participate via email in September 2023. Two question types were used including evidence-based practice (EBP) and PPs.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify which patients were "unsafe" for outpatient surgery patients and determine the most predictive demographic and clinical factors contributing to postoperative risk following open reduction internal fixation for distal radius fractures.
Methods: Adult patients (aged ≥18 years) who presented with distal radius fracture and underwent open reduction internal fixation were identified using the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database for years 2016 to 2021. Patients who were deemed "unsafe" therefore contraindicated for outpatient open reduction internal fixation of distal radius fracture if they required admission (length of stay of one or more days) or experienced any complication or required readmission within 7 days of the index operation.
Turner syndrome is a rare chromosomal abnormality in women that is caused by a partial or complete loss of one X chromosome and is often associated with a spectrum of congenital cardiac abnormalities, including cardiac shunts. A 27-year-old woman with Turner syndrome was also found to have right ventricular dilation, partial anomalous pulmonary venous return, and possible atrial septal defect. She was scheduled for elective surgical repair.

Background: Depression treatments aim to minimize symptom burden and optimize quality of life (QoL) and psychosocial function.
Objective: Compare the effects of adjunctive versus sham vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) on QoL and function in markedly treatment-resistant depression (TRD).
Methods: In this multicenter, double-blind, sham-controlled trial, 493 adults with TRD and ≥4 adequate but unsuccessful antidepressant treatment trials (current episode) were randomized to active (n = 249) or sham (n = 244) VNS (plus treatment as usual) over a 12-month observation period.

Objective: The growing number of adults with childhood onset chronic conditions (COCC) is reflected in the increase of adult-aged admissions to pediatric institutions. Despite national bodies advising pediatric institutions to have a pediatric to adult healthcare transition (HCT) policy, little guidance is available on if or how to include inpatient care. We sought to create a framework-based Pediatric to Adult Transitional Care in the Hospital Context (PATCH) tool to assess how inpatient care of adults is addressed in pediatric institutional guidelines or policies (hereafter guidelines) as a first step towards informing future PATCH guideline development.

In all aspects of orthopedic surgery, restoring native patient anatomy has demonstrated improved outcomes in comparison to non-anatomic reconstructions. Particular attention has been paid to the hip capsule, as the complex of the iliofemoral, pubofemoral, ischiofemoral ligaments, zona orbicularis and iliocapsularis, all play an essential role in hip stability, mechanics, and maintenance of intra-articular pressures. An anatomic approach toward hip arthroscopy, also includes labral repair or reconstruction with preservation of the chondrolabral junction and cam resection.

Purpose: Denileukin diftitox (DD)-cxdl is a fusion protein comprising diphtheria toxin fragments A and B and human interleukin-2. This phase III, multicenter, open-label, single-arm registrational trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of DD-cxdl in patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL).
Patients And Methods: In the main study, which followed a dose-finding lead-in, DD-cxdl was administered intravenously daily (5 days; 9 µg/kg/d once daily) every 21 days for up to eight cycles.

Introduction: While there may be microbial contributions to Alzheimer's disease (AD), findings have been inconclusive. We recently reported an AD-associated CD83(+) microglia subtype associated with increased immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) in the transverse colon (TC).
Methods: We used immunohistochemistry (IHC), IgG4 repertoire profiling, and brain organoid experiments to explore this association.

Background: High ligation is the standard practice for inguinal hernia repair in children while adults undergo a floor repair. There is limited data to guide recommendations on the age at which floor repair should be considered. This is a hypothesis-generating study to understand the correlation of age and other factors with inguinal hernia recurrence in children.

Purpose: Tumor-informed circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) has shown promise as a biomarker for treatment response monitoring (TRM) in a variety of tumor types, with the potential to improve clinical outcomes. We evaluated ctDNA status and dynamics during surveillance and as part of TRM with clinical outcomes in both patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and non-clear cell renal cell carcinoma (nccRCC) treated with standard-of-care immunotherapy or targeted therapy regimens.
Methods: This was a multicenter retrospective analysis of real-world data obtained from commercial ctDNA testing (Signatera, Natera, Inc) in patients with metastatic RCC.

Background: Niemann-Pick Disease Type C (NPC) is an ultra-rare disorder characterized by progressive psychiatric and neurologic manifestations, with late infantile, juvenile, and adolescent/adult presentations. We examined morphological properties of the choroid plexus, a protective blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier, in NPC, and their relationship with neurodegeneration, clinical status, and circulatory markers. This study also determined whether choroid plexus morphology differentiates between NPC and more prevalent illnesses, schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD), which have overlapping psychiatric symptoms with adolescent and adult-onset NPC and are associated with misdiagnosis.
