Purpose: The dome technique is a technique used in performance of revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) involving intraoperative joining of two porous metal acetabular augments to fill a massive anterosuperior medial acetabular bone defect. While excellent outcomes were achieved using this surgical technique in a series of three cases, short-term results have not been reported. We hypothesized that excellent short-term clinical and patient reported outcomes could be achieved with use of the dome technique.

Total hip arthroplasty is an increasingly common procedure used to address degenerative changes in the hip joint due to osteoarthritis. Although generally associated with good results, among the challenges associated with hip arthroplasty are accurate measurement of biomechanical parameters such as leg length, offset, and cup position, discrepancies of which can lead to significant long-term consequences such as pain, instability, neurological deficits, dislocation, and revision surgery, as well as patient dissatisfaction and, increasingly, litigation. Current methods of managing these parameters are limited, with manual methods such as outriggers or calipers being used to monitor leg length; however, these are susceptible to small intraoperative changes in patient position and are therefore inaccurate.

Objectives: "Heart sparing" refers to prominent antegrade fetal coronary artery (CA) blood flow readily visualized by color Doppler and is a harbinger of poor outcome in growth restricted fetus, but little is known of the features and presentation of heart sparing in normally grown fetuses. Our objective was to describe heart sparing effects in normally grown fetuses, and compare the presentation and outcome of heart sparing between fetuses with growth restriction and those who were normally grown.

Methods: In a series of fetuses with prominent antegrade CA flow, we assessed Doppler flow profiles in the aortic isthmus, ductus venosus (DV), umbilical vein (UV), umbilical artery (UA) and middle cerebral artery (MCA).

The feasibility and perioperative complications of outpatient knee arthroplasty.

Clin Orthop Relat Res

June 2009

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Rush Medical College, Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center, 1725 West Harrison Street, Suite 1063, Chicago, IL 60612, USA.

Unlabelled: The duration of hospitalization and subsequent length of recovery after elective knee arthroplasty have decreased. We hypothesized same-day discharge following either a unicompartmental (UKA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in an unselected group of patients would not result in a higher perioperative complication rate than standard-length hospitalization when following a comprehensive perioperative clinical pathway, including preoperative teaching, regional anesthesia, preemptive oral analgesia, preemptive antiemetics, and a rapid rehabilitation protocol. We prospectively followed 111 of all 121 patients who had primary knee arthroplasty completed by noon and who agreed to be followed prospectively; 25 had UKA and 86 TKA.

Impaired compensation for mechanical loads in a patient with hemiballismus following stroke.

Parkinsonism Relat Disord

January 2000

Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Rush-Presbyterian-St.Luke's Medical Center, 1653 West Congress Parkway, Chicago, IL 60612, USA; Department of Molecular Biophysics and Physiology, Rush-Presbyterian-St.Luke's Medical Center, 1653 West Congress Parkway, Chicago, IL 60612, USA.

Flexion movements of the wrist were studied in a patient who showed signs of hemiballismus following a unilateral infarction, which damaged the region neighboring the subthalamic nucleus. The experiments were designed to test whether a lesion of this nature impairs load compensation and, specifically, whether antagonist activity can be appropriately suppressed when initiating a movement. The latency between movement onset and agonist EMG onset changed from the normal relationship where agonist onset precedes movement to one where agonist onset followed movement when an extensor load was placed on the affected limb.

Long-term Outcome of Adult Onset Idiopathic Minimal Change Disease.

Saudi J Kidney Dis Transpl

October 2012

Department of Medicine, Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Minimal Change Disease (MCD) is the lesion most commonly associated with nephrotic syndrome in children, accounting for over 75% of cases. Although less common, MCD still accounts for up to 30% of adult onset nephrotic syndrome. Unlike children, in whom MCD is primarily idiopathic, secondary causes of MCD are seen in 13% of adults and must be considered, as the therapeutic approach to these patients is defined by the underlying cause.
