Objectives: To characterize representation and inclusion among Sleep Research Society members and examine associations between sociodemographic features and Sleep Research Society experiences.

Methods: The Sleep Research Society Taskforce for Diversity and Inclusion developed a web-based questionnaire in 2021, assessing membership data and Sleep Research Society experiences (self-initiated and society-initiated participation, feeling very welcomed, perceptions of inclusiveness, and diversity of viewpoints represented). Frequencies were calculated and adjusted Poisson regression models with robust variance were fit to estimate associations.

Importance: Preclinical studies suggest that exposure to prostate-directed local therapy (LT) may influence the efficacy of subsequent systemic therapy including androgen receptor pathway inhibitors. However, there is insufficient clinical evidence to support this premise in patients with nonmetastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (nmCRPC).

Objective: To determine whether exposure to prior prostate-directed LT (radical prostatectomy [RP], radiation therapy [RT], or both) played any effect-modifying role in the treatment effect of apalutamide on metastasis-free survival (MFS) and overall survival (OS) in patients with nmCRPC.

Recommended guidelines for screening for underlying malignancy in extramammary Paget's disease based on anatomic subtype.

J Am Acad Dermatol

February 2025

Department of Dermatology, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) can be linked to underlying internal adenocarcinomas, with varying associations based on the EMPD subtype.
  • A systematic literature review identified that perianal EMPD has a higher rate (25%) of associated adenocarcinomas compared to penoscrotal and vulvar types (6% each).
  • The proposed screening algorithms suggest specific tests based on EMPD subtype, emphasizing thorough screening for high-risk perianal cases and more cost-effective approaches for lower-risk penoscrotal and vulvar cases.

Article Synopsis
  • Lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis (LDS) is a condition involving spinal instability due to intervertebral disc degeneration and facet joint changes, leading to pain and potential surgery, but its causes are not well understood.
  • This study examined the relationship between gut microbiome dysbiosis (an imbalance of gut bacteria) and spine health in symptomatic patients with and without LDS by analyzing fecal samples.
  • Findings indicated that patients with LDS showed more severe disc degeneration, distinct gut microbiome structures, and a higher ratio of pro-inflammatory bacteria compared to those without LDS, suggesting a possible link between gut health and spinal conditions.

Breast cancer risk reduction strategies have been well-validated, but barriers remain for high-risk individuals to adopt them. We performed a study among participants with high risk of breast cancer to validate whether a virtual breast health decision tool impacted a participant's willingness to start risk-reducing activities, identify barriers to adopting these strategies, and understand if it affects breast cancer anxiety. The study sample was 318 participants in the personalized (investigational) arm of the Women Informed to Screen Depending on Measures of risk (WISDOM) clinical trial.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effectiveness of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided celiac plexus block versus a sham procedure in alleviating abdominal pain for patients suffering from chronic pancreatitis, with the aim of determining pain reduction statistics.
  • - Conducted as a randomized sham-controlled trial, the research will involve multiple academic sites and focus on patients whose chronic pancreatitis is confirmed by EUS diagnostic criteria, measuring outcomes like pain reduction through specific pain assessment tools.
  • - The ultimate goal is to provide a clear evaluation of celiac plexus block’s efficacy compared to a placebo treatment, which may help in managing chronic pain related to pancreatitis more effectively.

Purpose: To compare the differences between men and women who receive primary osteochondral allograft transplantation of the knee with regard to preoperative disease presentation, failures and reoperations.

Methods: A retrospective review of patients ≥18 years old who underwent primary osteochondral allograft transplantation between 2002 and 2020 by a single surgeon with a minimum of 2-year follow-up was performed. Demographic, preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative data were collected for all included patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the feasibility and safety of active surveillance for patients with multiple ground glass opacities (GGOs) in the lungs, which are a common concern in medical imaging.
  • A total of 337 patients, primarily older adults with a significant history of smoking, were enrolled and monitored over time, with each GGO documented via CT scans every 6 to 12 months.
  • Preliminary findings suggest that active surveillance is a viable management option for patients, with ongoing assessments planned to evaluate long-term safety and outcomes over five years.

Alda-1 attenuation of binge alcohol-caused atrial arrhythmias through a novel mechanism of suppressed c-Jun N-terminal Kinase-2 activity.

J Mol Cell Cardiol

December 2024

Department of Physiology and Cell Biology, College of Medicine/Wexner Medical Center, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Holiday Heart Syndrome (HHS) is linked to excessive binge drinking, resulting in atrial fibrillation (AF), which poses significant health risks and is of great concern for prevention and treatment.
  • This study explores the beneficial effects of Alda-1, which counteracts alcohol-induced calcium (Ca) abnormalities and arrhythmias in mouse atria and isolated human heart channels, suggesting a protective role in HHS-related AF.
  • Findings reveal that Alda-1 inhibits JNK2 enzyme activity independently of alcohol detoxification pathways, providing insights into a potential therapeutic approach to reduce binge alcohol-related arrhythmogenic effects.

Introduction: Atypical lipomatous tumor (ALT) in the extremities is a locally aggressive adipocytic tumor with the potential risk of transformation into dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLS). Studies seldom differentiate whether DDLS was diagnosed on initial biopsy, final resected specimen, or subsequent recurrence. Our study seeks to characterize how and when patients received their ALT or DDLS diagnoses to better understand the relationship between the two neoplasms.

Unlabelled: In the hepatis B virus (HBV) transgenic mouse model of chronic infection, the forkhead box protein A/hepatocyte nuclear factor 3 (Foxa/HNF3) family of pioneer transcription factors are required to support postnatal viral demethylation and subsequent HBV transcription and replication. Liver-specific Foxa-deficient mice with hepatic expression of only Foxa3 do not support HBV replication but display biliary epithelial hyperplasia with bridging fibrosis. However, liver-specific Foxa-deficient mice with hepatic expression of only Foxa1 or Foxa2 also successfully restrict viral transcription and replication but display only minimal alterations in liver physiology.
