Fibrinolytic enzymes are promising in treating cardiovascular diseases due to their capacity to dissolve blood clots. The fibrinolytic enzyme from Arthrospira platensis (FEAP) was purified by ion exchange chromatography to investigate its ability to activate plasminogen, as well as its thrombolytic and fibrinogenolytic potential. Subsequently, two different cytotoxic assays (MTT and NR) and hemolysis test were performed to evaluate FEAP's safety.

The present study aimed to investigate the influence of ripening on the physicochemical, microbiological aspects, and fatty acid profile of Artisanal Coalho Cheeses and to detect if there are peptides with bioactive potential in their composition. Artisanal Coalho Cheese samples were kindly provided by a dairy farm located in Brazil in the Rio Grande do Norte state. A completely randomized design was adopted, with four maturation periods (0, 30, 45, and 60 days).

The search for improvements in quality of life has increasingly involved changes in the diet, especially the consumption of foods which, in addition to having good nutritional value, are characterized by offering health benefits. Among the molecules that trigger several beneficial responses are peptides, which are specific fragments of proteins known to produce positive effects on the human body. This review aimed to discuss the bioactive potential of peptides from cheeses.

This study aimed to investigate the mineral profile and histopathological findings in the liver of Leptodactylus macrosternum (white-lipped frog) and to assess the association between melanomacrophage areas and hepatic fungal granuloma with several factors such as weight, snout-cloacal length, sex, hepatosomatic index, season (dry and rainy), and condition factor K. A total of 135 frogs of different ages were collected from three areas in the city of Petrolina, Pernambuco, with varying land use (conventional agriculture, organic agriculture, and Caatinga stricto sensu). The liver of all specimens exhibited changes such as granulomatous lesions, inflammatory cell infiltrate, blood vessel congestion, and sinusoid dilation.

This study aimed to research Toxoplasma gondii DNA in 102 samples of raw bovine milk from expansion tanks, in small properties located in different cities of the Midwest region of São Paulo, Brazil. For this, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed with the primers TOX4/TOX5 for cPCR (conventional PCR), TgNP1/TgNP2 gene for nested PCR and the Tg18s58F/Tg18s348R for nested PCR. It was possible to detect T.

The effect on the morpho-physiological parameters and yield of sorghum cultivated in a greenhouse with reclaimed water (RW) and (dehydrated sludge (DS) obtained in a sewage treatment plant, was evaluated. Six treatments (T), with five repetitions each, were carried out in entirely randomized blocks. Water (W) was used in T1 (W) (control), T2 (W + NPK), and T3 (W + DS); RW was used in T4 (RW), T5 (RW + P), and T6 (RW + DS).

Purpose: To analyze the action of strontium ranelate (SR) and melatonin in isolation or in association in knees, liver and kidneys of rats Wistar with induced osteoarthritis (OA).
Methods: Thirty male rats were induced to OA through an anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT), and treated with melatonin and SR in isolation or in association. Morphological, histopathological, histochemical and morphometric analysis were realized of the structure of the articular capsule, as well as histopathological analysis of liver and kidneys from the animals.

Animals developed or in an embryonic stage, are constantly subjected to magnetic pollution generated by electrical and electronic devices. Several researches have used the bird embryo as an experimental model to evaluate the action of magnetic field (MF) and electromagnetic field (EMF). This study proposed to perform a morphometric evaluation in the embryos and in the blood vascular network of the yolk sac membranes (YSM) of Japanese quail () exposed to the 60 Hz MF with two different intensities (0.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a multisystem disorder that affects 2-3% of the population ≥ 65 years of age. The main pharmacologic agent use in the treatment of clinical symptoms of PD is levodopa (L-DOPA). However, the chronic use of L-DOPA might result in the emergence of motor complications such as motor fluctuation and dyskinesia.

The brain is an organ rich in lipids, including cholesterol, in which these lipids are associated to structure and brain function. Thus alterations in lipid levels of diets may interfere in the brain electrical activity. Our aim was to evaluate the interference of hypercholesterolemic diets in the brain electrical activity in normal individuals and with epilepsy.

Introduction: Kaurene diterpenes (KDs) constitute a chemical class often found in the genus Annona with interesting biological activities. To date, chromatographic tools have been mostly used to determine KDs. Quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance (qNMR) has distinguished itself in quantitative estimation of natural products and is an interesting choice to assess total KD contents.

Western diets are high in saturated fat and low in omega-3. Certain animals cannot produce omega-3 from their own lipids, making it necessary for it to be acquired from the diet. However, omega-3s are important components of the plasma membrane, and altering their proportions can promote physical and chemical alterations in the membranes, which may modify neuronal excitability.

Blood coagulation and platelet-dependent primary homeostasis are important defense mechanisms against bleeding and novel inhibitors have been researched to obtain pharmacological and clinical applications. In this work, the PpyLL, a lectin obtained from Phthirusa pyrifolia, was characterized in terms of its molecular structure and biological functions (anticoagulant, antiplatelet agreggation and hemagglutinating activities) in presence or absence of Gamma radiation exposure. Results revealed a lectin with secondary-structure content by approximately 49% of β-sheet, 20% of β-turn and 31% of disordered structure.

Osteoporosis is a multifactorial and debilitating disease resulting from decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and loss of tissue microarchitecture. Ineffective therapies may lead to bone fractures and subsequent death. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in key immune regulator genes have been associated with therapeutic response to bisphosphonates, which are the first therapeutic line of choice for osteoporosis.

Infection by high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in genes involved in cell cycle control, as p21 and p27, are important factors in the development of different types of human cancers. This study aims at investigating whether both the p21 Ser31Arg and p27 V109G polymorphisms are associated with susceptibility to the development of cervical lesions in women HR-HPV positive. We analyzed 132 women HPV positive and with cervical lesions or CC and 154 healthy control (HPV negative and without cervical lesions).
