Salivary gland neoplasms account for 3% of all head and neck tumours. Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common salivary gland tumour that mainly occurs in the parotid gland, followed by minor salivary glands of the oral cavity, however, the occurrence of PA inside the jaw bones is exceedingly rare and very few cases have been reported in the literature. Inside jaw bones these lesions tend to imitate large osteolytic lesions encompass a diagnostic challenge.

Article Synopsis
  • The study introduces a new cephalometric measure called the Zeta angle, designed to assess the maxillomandibular relationship in individuals with sagittal skeletal dysplasia.
  • Using 291 lateral cephalograms of young participants, researchers classified skeletal relationships and measured the Zeta angle to identify discrepancies in jaw alignment.
  • Findings suggest specific ranges of the Zeta angle correlate with skeletal class types, showing strong sensitivity and specificity for distinguishing between skeletal classes II and III.

Evaluation of Extraction of Teeth without Alteration in Aspirin Therapy: A Cross Sectional Study.

J Pharm Bioallied Sci

February 2024

Senior Lecturer, Department of Prosthodontics, Crown and Bridge, Rural Dental College, Loni, Maharashtra, India.

Aim: The study was done to evaluate extraction of teeth without altering the aspirin therapy.

Materials And Method: Hundred patients taking aspirin therapy requiring extraction of teeth were separated into two groups with 50 samples in each. Group I continued the aspirin therapy during extraction of teeth on one occasion, and the same patients who discontinued the aspirin therapy 72 hours before extraction of teeth on another occasion become Group II.

Comparing the Effectiveness of Traditional Periodontal Surgery Versus Non-Surgical Therapy: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

J Pharm Bioallied Sci

February 2024

Department of Periodontology and Implantology, Malak, Al Rahma Polyclinic, Saudi Arabia.

Background: Periodontal disease, characterized by inflammation and infection of the supporting structures of teeth, poses a significant oral health challenge. Traditional periodontal surgery and non-surgical therapy, such as scaling and root planing, are established treatment approaches for addressing periodontal disease.

Materials And Methods: The study enrolled 120 adult patients diagnosed with moderate to severe periodontal disease.

Root biomodifiers help in removing the smear layer following mechanical debridement. In this context, we evaluated and compared the efficacy of MTAD, MTAD+I-PRF, and phosphate-buffered saline-conditioned dentin surfaces by examining the distribution of the fibrin network using scanning electron microscopy. It was concluded that MTAD can serve as a potentially useful root conditioner/biomodifier.

Article Synopsis
  • In modern dentistry, the focus has shifted towards preventing cavities, with pit and fissure sealants (PFS) being a key method to avoid the buildup of plaque in hard-to-reach areas of teeth.
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of dentin bonding agents (DBA) alone or with a procedure called fissurotomy in reducing microleakage before applying PFS on freshly extracted premolars.
  • Results indicated that using both fissurotomy and DBA (Group 4) resulted in the least microleakage, while the conventional PFS method (Group 1) had significantly higher microleakage scores, highlighting the benefits of combining techniques for better outcomes.

Background: Composites with 0.2% chitosan nanoparticles (CSN) are used recently; however, this combination needs to be studied in different cavity designs.

Aims: The aim of the study was to compare the fracture resistance of maxillary premolars with different cavity geometries restored with different types of composite resins incorporated with 0.

Background: Antioxidant application soon after bleaching process increases the shear bond strength (SBS) of composite resin to enamel.

Aims: The aim of the study was to evaluate the antioxidant effects of selenium alone and in combination with alpha-tocopherol (αT) and green tea (GT) on SBS of composite resin to enamel following in-office bleaching with 38% hydrogen peroxide (HP).

Methods: Sixty extracted human single -rooted premolar teeth were cleaned and embedded in acrylic resin blocks at the level of cementoenamel junction(CEJ) followed by bleaching with 38% hydrogen peroxide (HP) and arbitrarily divided into seven groups (n=10) for antioxidant application: Group I (negative control): intact teeth, Group II (positive control): only bleaching, Group III: 10% selenium (Se), Group IV: 10% alpha tocopherol (αT), Group V: 10% αT +10% Se, Group VI: 10% Green tea (GT), Group VII: 10%GT+10% Se.

Introduction: Fixed functional appliances are widely used for the treatment of retrognathic mandibles in skeletal class II malocclusion. The primary objective of the present investigation was to evaluate and compare the treatment effects induced by PowerScope (American Orthodontics, Sheboygan, WI) and AdvanSync2 (Ormco, Orange, CA). The hypothesis posited that there were no notable disparities in the therapeutic impacts of the two appliances.

Background: Reports suggested that hormone replacement therapy decreased the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral cavity.

Aim: The aim of this study was to analyze and quantify the serum 17β-estradiol (E2) level by chemiluminescence immunoassay in four groups, Group I (control group with no habit of tobacco and areca), Group II (control group with a habit of tobacco and areca), Group III (potentially malignant disorder-leukoplakia), and Group IV (oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC)). It was the first study to evaluate E2 in four study groups with and without the habit of tobacco.

Introduction: The foundation of oncology treatment as a single modality approach as well as the "multimodality" concept has been studied by statistical evaluation pre, during, and posttreatment to rule out their efficacy, expected prognosis, toxicity reactions, and overall survival for the patient. Such studies have also provided an appreciable amount of data for future custom utility. "Targeted therapy" is a cancer treatment that uses drugs but is different from traditional chemotherapy.

Addition silicones have revolutionized the field of fixed prosthodontics because of their dimensional stability, sufficient tear strength and excellent detail reproduction. This review study aims to provide a detailed description of the essential variables to be taken into account during the process of making addition silicone impressions in fixed prosthodontics. These variables include the selection of appropriate tray type, size, and fabrication; the use of tray adhesive; gingival displacement techniques; manipulation of the impression material; the choice of the impression material's viscosity; impression techniques; and the proper insertion, removal, disinfection, and pouring of the cast.

Background: Solid multicystic ameloblastoma (SMA) is a locally aggressive, benign odontogenic tumor of odontogenic origin with greater rate of recurrence. Epithelial-mesenchymal interaction plays an important role in tooth morphogenesis that shows complete differentiation of epithelial and ectomesenchymal components to the level of tooth formation. Tumor stroma in ameloblastoma is normal mature collagen that prevents differentiation to the level of tooth formation.
