Introduction Gingival enlargement (GE) poses a significant problem during fixed orthodontic treatment (FOT). Thus, the primary aim of the current study was to evaluate the concentrations of biomarkers present in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of individuals receiving FOT. The ancillary aim was to examine and compare biomarker levels among patients exhibiting GE undergoing FOT, those without GE undergoing FOT, and a control group comprising individuals not undergoing FOT and to assess the predictors for GE in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • An innovative toothbrush was created with a rotatable shank and a flexible design to improve access to all surfaces of the mouth, aimed at reducing plaque and improving gingival health.
  • A randomized controlled trial compared this rotatable shank toothbrush with traditional flexible and straight handle toothbrushes to see which was more effective for plaque control and gingival health outcomes.
  • Results showed that the rotatable shank toothbrush provided better improvements in plaque removal and gingival health compared to the other types of toothbrushes used in the study.

Stainless-steel crowns (SSCs) are the most durable restorative option for deciduous teeth, although they are unsightly. However, prefabricated zirconia crowns (ZCs) look more pleasant but require substantial dental preparation. Recently, BioFlx crowns have been introduced as a white-colored alternative to SSCs, providing both flexibility and aesthetics.

Ectopic teeth arise from developmental abnormalities and can be supernumerary, deciduous, or permanent teeth. They can cause orofacial pain, swelling, and infection. There is a major paucity in literature about ectopic mandibular third molar (EMTM) and its causes, symptoms, and treatment.

The use of rotary file in permanent teeth is well-documented, but there is limited scientific evidence for its effectiveness in primary teeth. A meta-analysis was conducted to compare rotary and manual tools in primary tooth pulpectomy procedures. Ten databases were searched from 2000 to 2024 to find relevant literature.

  • Dental caries is a widespread, chronic oral infection caused by cariogenic bacteria, with drug resistance complicating treatment efforts.
  • A study isolated and identified soil actinomycetes to test their antibacterial and anti-biofilm effects on antibiotic-resistant cariogenic bacteria, specifically Streptococcus mutans, an identified strong biofilm producer.
  • The actinomycete isolate MMS-10 exhibited significant inhibitory effects on S. mutans growth and biofilm formation, and was identified as Streptomyces luridiscabiei, with its active compound being 2,4-Di-tert-butylphenol, showing potential as a drug-like agent.

Introduction: Achieving success in root canal (RC) therapy relies on three key components: comprehensive cleaning of the canal, efficient disinfection, and proper filling of the canal space. The present study aimed to compare the efficacy of four obturation techniques: single cone (SC), GuttaCore (GC), cold lateral condensation (LC), and C Point system for RC filling of permanent teeth.

Materials And Methods: 76 extracted human mandibular first premolars were divided into four groups, with 19 teeth in each group (group A, obturation with SC technique; group B, obturation with GC; group C, obturation with LC; and group D, obturation with C Point system).

Article Synopsis
  • Lipoma is a slow-growing, painless tumor made of soft tissue that originates from mesenchymal cells, with rare occurrences in the oral cavity (1-4%) but more frequent in the head and neck region.
  • Common sites for lipoma in the oral cavity include the buccal mucosa, lips, tongue, palate, buccal sulcus, and floor of the mouth.
  • Surgical excision is the main treatment for removing lipomas, especially if they interfere with speech or eating.

Background: Orthodontic treatment is known to significantly impact facial esthetics, but there is a lack of long-term studies examining its effects, particularly in conjunction with the natural aging process. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the enduring effects of orthodontic treatment on facial esthetics and aging over a 15-year period.

Materials And Methods: Three hundred orthodontic patients aged 12 to 25 at the start of treatment were included.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to compare serum immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels among patients with oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), leukoplakia, and a control group to explore potential links to oral cancer.
  • OSMF and leukoplakia are recognized as precursors to oral malignancy, with OSMF showing a notable transformation rate in India; the research employs a specific immunoassay to measure IgA levels in patients.
  • Findings suggest that the immunological changes in OSMF and leukoplakia are similar to those in oral cancer, indicating these conditions may serve as indicators of an increased risk for malignancy and highlighting the importance of early detection.

Mucocele: A Case Report.

J Pharm Bioallied Sci

July 2024

Department of Periodontology, Dr RR Kambe Dental College and Hospital, Akola, Maharashtra, India.

Mucoceles are the most common minor salivary gland disorder and represent the second most frequent benign soft tissue tumors of the oral cavity, following irritative fibroma. Various treatment modalities have been suggested for mucocele among which different types of lasers being the most recent and advanced. In the present case reports, diode laser was used for the excision of mucocele on the lower lip, and the advantages of it over the conventional scalpel method were minimal discomfort, bleeding, recurrence, and better compliance among patients.

  • Odontogenic cysts (OCs) are jaw cysts that develop from the odontogenic epithelium, mainly due to cell proliferation or degeneration, and this study focused on their prevalence, characteristics, and clinicopathological features.
  • Out of 218 OCs analyzed from 200 patients, the average age was about 36 years, with a slightly higher occurrence in males; most patients reported pain, and radicular cysts were the most common type found.
  • The study observed a 3.20% recurrence rate, with common risk factors including age, sex, and location, and highlighted that the findings align with international studies on OCs.

Longstanding partial edentulism in the posterior segment of the maxilla is a challenging treatment and typically involves extensive and invasive sinus floor augmentation. Various methods have been employed for sinus floor elevation, including the application of hydraulic pressure using the balloon technique. This case report describes a modified ballooning technique to elevate the sinus floor using a Foley catheter to apply the hydraulic pressure method to elevate the Schneiderian membrane prior to the placement of bone grafts and an endosseous implant in a 37-year-old male patient who presented with an atrophic alveolar ridge height of 3.
