July 2024

Department of Pediatrics, Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapies Service, MSK Kids, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Service. New York, New York; Department of Pediatrics, Weill Cornell Medicine, New York, New York.

The clinical value of serial routine bone marrow aspirates (rBMAs) in the first year after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT) to detect or predict relapse of acute leukemia (AL) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) in pediatric and young adult patients is unclear. The purpose of this analysis was to determine if assessment of minimal residual disease (MRD) by multiparameter flow cytometry (MFC, MFC-MRD) or donor chimerism (DC) in rBMAs or serial complete blood counts (CBCs) done in the year after alloHCT predicted relapse of AL or MDS in pediatric and young adult patients. We completed a retrospective analysis of patients with AL or MDS who had rBMAs performed after alloHCT between January 2012 and June 2018.

Compared to their closest ape relatives, humans walk bipedally with lower metabolic cost (C) and less mechanical work to move their body center of mass (external mechanical work, W). However, differences in W are not large enough to explain the observed lower C: humans may also do less work to move limbs relative to their body center of mass (internal kinetic mechanical work, W). From published data, we estimated differences in W, total mechanical work (W), and efficiency between humans and chimpanzees walking bipedally.

July 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at University at Buffalo, Buffalo, New York, USA; Department of Neurosurgery, Buffalo General Medical Center, Kaleida Health, Buffalo, New York, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Smoking tobacco cigarettes can hinder bone healing after spinal fusion, and this study aimed to quantify smoking history using pack years to assess its impact on fusion outcomes post-ACDF.
  • A review of 97 patients showed that those with a smoking history of 6.1 pack years or more had lower fusion rates compared to non-smokers, with about 93% achieving fusion overall.
  • The research suggests that smoking more than 6.1 pack years significantly increases the risk of nonfusion, highlighting the importance of considering smoking history in surgical outcomes.

This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V=W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137  fb^{-1}. The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into bb[over ¯].

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a devastating X-linked neuromuscular disorder caused by dystrophin gene deletions (75%), duplications (15-20%) and point mutations (5-10%), a small portion of which are nonsense mutations. Women carrying dystrophin gene mutations are commonly because the wild X allele may produce a sufficient amount of the dystrophin protein. However, approximately 8-10% of them may experience muscle symptoms and 50% of those over 40 years develop cardiomyopathy.

Doxorubicin (DOX) is a chemotherapy agent commonly used to treat triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), but it has insufficient efficacy against the disease and considerable toxicity due to its off-target delivery. To improve the specificity of DOX for TNBC, we encapsulated it in poly(lactic--glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs) coated with antibodies against Frizzled7 (FZD7), a receptor that is overexpressed on TNBC cells and which is a key activator of the Wnt signaling pathway. In vitro studies show that DOX encapsulation does not hinder its ability to localize to the nucleus in human TNBC cell cultures and that DOX delivered via NPs induces apoptosis and DNA damage via H2A.
