Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were discovered in porcine expressed sequence tags (ESTs) orthologous to genes from human chromosome 13 (HSA13) and predicted to be located on pig chromosome 11 (SSC11). The SNPs were identified as sequence variants in clusters of EST sequences from pig cDNA libraries constructed in the Sino-Danish pig genome project. In total, 312 human gene sequences from HSA13 were used for similarity searches in our pig EST database.

The Danish story started with the publication of Willett's Lancet paper in 1993, and ended when industrially produced trans fatty acids (IP-TFA) were reduced at the Danish market following a ban in 2003. The Danish Nutrition Council, established in 1992, was the driving force behind a campaign that convinced Danish politicians that IP-TFA could be removed from foods without any effect on taste, price or availability of foods. The Nutrition Council argued that as no positive health effect of IP-TFA had ever been reported, then just the suspicion that a high intake exerts harmful effects on health could justify a ban.

The Haley-Knott (HK) regression method continues to be a popular approximation to standard interval mapping (IM) of quantitative trait loci (QTL) in experimental crosses. The HK method is favored for its dramatic reduction in computation time compared to the IM method, something that is particularly important in simultaneous searches for multiple interacting QTL. While the HK method often approximates the IM method well in estimating QTL effects and in power to detect QTL, it may perform poorly if, for example, there is strong epistasis between QTL or if QTL are linked.

Maternal (n-3) PUFA deficiency is associated with higher blood pressure (BP) later in life in rat offspring, and early intake of (n-3) PUFA in formula-fed infants was shown to modify later BP. The objective of this study was, by means of simulation, to quantify the effect of ignoring individual heterogeneity in Weibull sire frailty models on parameter estimates and to address the consequences for genetic inferences. Three simulation studies were evaluated, which included 3 levels of individual heterogeneity combined with 4 levels of censoring (0, 25, 50, or 75%). Data were simulated according to balanced half-sib designs using Weibull log-normal animal frailty models with a normally distributed residual effect on the log-frailty scale.

Background & Aims: Preterm birth and formula feeding are key risk factors associated with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in infants, but little is known about intestinal conditions that predispose to disease. Thus, structural, functional, and microbiologic indices were used to investigate the etiology of spontaneous NEC development in preterm pigs.

Methods: Piglets were delivered by cesarean section at 92% gestation, reared in infant incubators, and fed infant formula or colostrum every 3 hours (n = 120) until tissue collection at 1-2 days of age.

The objective of the present study was to validate the use of blood collected from an indwelling arterial catheter for analysis of haematological, coagulation and inflammatory parameters in canines compared to venous blood collected directly from the jugular vein. Blood samples were collected from 11 dogs. Agreement between sampling methods was found for neutrophil and monocyte counts, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, antithrombin, protein C, factor VIII and C-reactive protein, whereas a statistically significant difference was found for white blood cells, lymphocyte, erythrocyte and platelet counts, haemoglobin, haematocrit, fibrinogen and thrombin time (TT).

The aim of the investigation was to determine the genetic relationship of a phenotypically diverse strain collection of epidemiologically unrelated strains from the taxon 2 and 3 complex of Bisgaard isolated from different hosts. A total of 325 isolates belonging to the taxon 2 and 3 complex of Bisgaard was characterized phenotypically in 82 characters. Fungicides inhibiting the biosynthesis of ergostrol, such as the triazoles and imidazoles, have been shown to enhance the effect of insecticides on birds, mammals and invertebrates in the terrestrial environment. The synergy is proposed to be due to an effect on P450 monooxygenase enzymes active in pesticide metabolism in these organisms. Fungicides often enter the aquatic environment jointly with other pesticides.

Statistical models for spot shapes and signal intensities are used in image analysis of laser scans of microarrays. Most models have essentially been based on the assumption of independent pixel intensity values, but models that allow for spatial correlation among neighbouring pixels can accommodate errors in the microarray slide and should improve the model fit. Five spatial correlation structures, exponential, Gaussian, linear, rational quadratic and spherical, are compared for a dataset with 50-mer two-colour oligonucleotide microarrays and 452 probes for selected Arabidopsis genes.

Gene sequences with high homologies to the two genes fatA and fatD, associated with the pJM1 virulence plasmid-encoded iron-sequestering system (anguibactin) in Vibrio anguillarum serogroup O1 strains, were found in a range of serogroup O2a strains and one NT 4 strain that either contained no plasmids or only small-sized plasmids. None of these strains contained the angR gene responsible for regulation of the anguibactin synthesis. DNA sequences of presumed fatA and fatD fragments from one O2a strain and one NT4 strain were identical to each other.

The reduction and control of allergens in the animal facility is important for staff working with laboratory animals. This study was designed to evaluate the efficiency of perforated Makrolon curtains in front of racks as a method to reduce the amount of allergen in the animal room. The experimental situation we studied provides some information regarding allergen disposition in animal rooms but is clearly artificial and does not reflect a typical, 'real-world' environment in terms of preventing exposure of workers to allergens.

During repeated deep-fat frying of potato slices at 163 degrees C in yellow or red palm olein of comparable fatty acid profiles, the oxidative stability (peroxide value and anisidine value) of the palm oleins was similar, and in yellow palm olein, the rate of antioxidant depletion decreased in the order gamma-T3 > alpha-T3 > delta-T3 (T3, tocotrienol). In red palm olein, which had a total tocopherol/tocotrienol content of 1260 vs 940 ppm in yellow palm olein and a corresponding longer induction period in the Rancimat stability test at 120 degrees C, only depletion of gamma-T3 was significant among the phenols during frying and slower as compared to that in yellow palm olein. The carotenes in the red palm olein were depleted linearly with the number of fryings, apparently yielding an overall protection of the phenols.

The expression of drug metabolizing cytochrome P4502A (CYP2A) is highly gender-dependent in minipigs with the highest activity in females. In other species, orthologs of CYP2A have been shown to be under the regulation of nuclear receptor constitutive androstane receptor, whereas little is known about regulation in pigs. To investigate the effect of sex hormones on porcine cytochrome P450 CYP2A and CYP3A expression was assessed in liver samples taken before and after castration of sexually mature minipig boars.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the regulatory responses and the long-term effect of praziquantel treatment in chronically Schistosoma bovis-infected West African Dwarf goats. Forty-two goats were used and the design comprised a primary infection followed by treatment at week 13, challenge infection at week 36 and termination at week 52. We report the biochemical characterization in Xenopus oocytes of the Arabidopsis thaliana membrane protein, STP13, as a high affinity, hexose-specific H(+)-symporter. Studies with kinase activators suggest that it is negatively regulated by phosphorylation. STP13 promoter GFP reporter lines show GFP expression only in the vascular tissue in emerging petals under non-stressed conditions.
