A novel alkaliphilic and psychrophilic bacterium was isolated from the cold and alkaline ikaite tufa columns of the Ikka Fjord in south-west Greenland. According to 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain GCM71(T) belonged to the family 'Flexibacteraceae' in the phylum Bacteroidetes. Strain GCM71(T), together with five related isolates from ikaite columns, formed a separate cluster with 86-93 % gene sequence similarity to their closest relative, Belliella baltica.

Studies on the impact of interaction of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis and the parasitic nematode Ascaridia galli with the avian host were undertaken with particular emphasis on infection and excretion of these pathogens in two different layer lines. Maedi-Visna virus (MVV) infection in sheep is present in several European countries, including Norway. The current Norwegian surveillance and control programme for MVV infection uses three serological tests: an agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID) and two commercially available indirect ELISAs (Institut Pourquier, P-ELISA and HYPHEN BioMed, H-ELISA). From 18 flocks with suspected or confirmed MVV infection, sera from naturally infected sheep were obtained, and sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) of the three tests were estimated in absence of a perfect reference test using latent class models in a Bayesian analysis.

Purpose: Only about 50% of metastatic breast cancer patients benefit from cytotoxic chemotherapy. Today, no validated markers exist for prediction of chemotherapy sensitivity/resistance in this patient group. Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1) has been shown to protect against apoptosis, and the purpose of the present study was to test the hypothesis that tumors expressing high levels of TIMP-1 are protected against apoptosis-inducing agents and thus less sensitive to apoptosis-inducing chemotherapeutic drugs.

A real time quantitative PCR (RQ-PCR) assay was developed for measurement of differential expression of the genes encoding the acute phase reactant serum amyloid A (SAA), transferrin (TF) and a C-type lectin molecule (CL) in skin, blood and liver from Cyprinus carpio following infection with the ectoparasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. Serum amyloid A and CL were constitutively expressed in all organs evaluated while TF transcripts were only detected in the liver. A dramatic up-regulation (1600 times) in the expression levels of SAA was observed in skin 36 h after the parasite infection.

Computed tomography and a 3-point bending test were performed on the metacarpal bones of adult production pigs to test the hypothesis that bone strength is strongly correlated with areal bone mineral density (BMD) in this population. The aim of the study was to subject material from adult production pigs grouped by BMD to 3-point bending, to test this hypothesis and determine any correlations. Global gene expression was analyzed in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) by microarrays comprising 21,500 genes. Leaf segments derived from phosphorus (P)-starved and P-replenished plants were incubated with or without sucrose (Suc) to obtain tissues with contrasting combinations of P and carbohydrate levels. Transcript profiling revealed the influence of the two factors individually and the interactions between P- and sugar-dependent gene regulation.

Xenotransplantation holds the promise of replacing failing human organs with organs of animal origin. Transplantation of pancreatic islets from pigs to humans might restore glucose homeostasis and offer diabetic patients considerable improvement in their quality of life. The alpha-gal epitope, present in all mammals except humans, apes and Old World monkeys, is a decisive obstruction to successful xenotransplantation of vascularized organs as the reaction of alpha-gal-bearing endothelia with natural alpha-gal antibodies in the human blood mediates hyperacute rejection of the xenograft.

Swine workshop cluster 9 (SWC9) antibody identifying a porcine epitope on macrophages and thymocytes was used to precipitate and characterize the molecule from biotinylated macrophages and to obtain peptide sequence by mass spectrometry. The protein was identified as ecto-nucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 1 (NPP1/CD203a). The porcine NPP1/CD203a encoding gene was mapped to chromosome 1 using a radiation hybrid panel, and transcription was investigated by RT-PCR analysis of several tissues.

The plant plasma membrane proton pump (H(+)-ATPase) is stimulated by potassium, but it has remained unclear whether potassium is actually transported by the pump or whether it serves other roles. We now show that K(+) is bound to the proton pump at a site involving Asp(617) in the cytoplasmic phosphorylation domain, from where it is unlikely to be transported. Binding of K(+) to this site can induce dephosphorylation of the phosphorylated E(1)P reaction cycle intermediate by a mechanism involving Glu(184) in the conserved TGES motif of the pump actuator domain.
