Horizontal ball mills (HBMs) have been proven capable of remediating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in soil. Industrial-sized HBMs, which could easily be transported to impacted locations for on-site, ex-situ remediation, are readily available. This study examined PFAS degradation using an industrial-scale, 267 L cylinder HBM.

Despite this, approximately 7% of massive stars have observed magnetic fields, the origin of which is debated. We used multi-epoch interferometric and spectroscopic observations to characterize HD 148937, a binary system of two massive stars.

Contact experiences with women in senior leadership roles are important for creating acceptance of women in organizations dominated by men, such as the military, as leadership roles are considered demanding, requiring numerous agentic qualities that are often ascribed to men. The military lacks women in leadership levels within its organization. We wished to determine whether quality and quantity contact with women in leadership positions reduces intergroup anxiety, increases empathy and perspective-taking, and subsequently creates more favorable attitudes toward women in the military.

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) require accurate navigation, but the reliability of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) can be degraded by signal blockage and multipath interference in urban areas. Therefore, a navigation system that integrates a calibrated Reduced Inertial Sensors System (RISS) with GNSS is proposed. The system employs a machine-learning-based Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) as a novel calibration technique to improve the accuracy and reliability of the RISS.

The neutron flux distribution within the pool of the SLOWPOKE-2 reactor at the RMC has been characterized using neutron activation measurements as well as MCNP simulations. Westcott equivalent thermal neutron flux values were calculated from measured activities of solutions of Co, Au, and Cd-shielded Au at several reactor flux settings and compared to tabulated fluxes from MCNP simulations. Good agreement was found between the simulated and experimental thermal flux values, while larger uncertainties were highlighted in higher energy neutron fluxes.

The study focuses on the control of nonlinear dynamic systems in the presence of parameter uncertainties, unmodeled dynamics, and external disturbances. The lumped perturbation is assumed to be bounded within a polynomial in the system state with the polynomial parameters and degrees unknown a priori such that it accommodates a quite wider range dynamic systems. Based on the studies in recent super-twisting algorithm designs and the idea from adaptive sliding mode control for nonlinear systems with uncertainties, we propose a novel adaptive super-twisting algorithm with exponential reaching law, or exponential super-twisting algorithm (ESTA), for the high-stability and acceptable accuracy control of the aimed nonlinear dynamics.

Defluorination of perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) the direct capture of excess electrons poses a promising path to environmental decontamination. Herein we show that quantum-chemical model optimization methods can be adapted to simulate the changes to molecular geometry that result from electron capture. These reaction pathways demonstrate that the introduction of an additional electron causes a loss of the helical arrangement along linear carbon tail chains.

The global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signals are vulnerable to disruption sources, such as signal jamming. This, in turn, can cause severe degradation or discontinuities of the GNSS-based position, navigation, and timing services. The availability of multi-frequency signals from multi-constellation GNSS systems, such as Galileo and GLONASS, along with the modernization of GPS with multi-frequency signals, has the potential to increase the immunity of GNSS-based navigation systems to signal jamming.

Permafrost is ground that remains at or below 0 °C for two or more consecutive years. It is overlain by an active layer which thaws and freezes annually. The difference between these definitions - the active layer based on pore water phase and permafrost based on soil temperature - leads to challenges when monitoring and modelling permafrost environments.

Concentric circular gratings are diffractive optical elements useful for polarization-independent applications in photonics and plasmonics. They are usually fabricated using a low-throughput and expensive electron beam lithography technique. In this paper, concentric circular gratings with selectable pitch values were successfully manufactured on thin films of azobenzene molecular glass using a novel laser interference lithography technique utilizing Bessel beams generated by a combined lens-axicon configuration.

In pursuit of accessible and interpretable methods for direct and real-time observation of mechanochemical reactions, we demonstrate a tandem spectroscopic method for monitoring of ball-milling transformations combining fluorescence emission and Raman spectroscopy, accompanied by high-level molecular and periodic density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, including periodic time-dependent (TD-DFT) modelling of solid-state fluorescence spectra. This proof-of-principle report presents this readily accessible dual-spectroscopy technique as capable of observing changes to the supramolecular structure of the model pharmaceutical system indometacin during mechanochemical polymorph transformation and cocrystallisation. The observed time-resolved spectroscopic and kinetic data are supported by X-ray diffraction and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy measurements.

High-precision positioning from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) has garnered increased interest due to growing demand in various applications, like autonomous car navigation and precision agriculture. Precise Point Positioning (PPP) offers a distinct advantage over differential techniques by enabling precise position determination of a GNSS rover receiver through the use of external corrections sourced from either the Internet or dedicated correction satellites. However, PPP's implementation has been challenging due to the need to mitigate numerous GNSS error sources, many of which are eliminated in differential techniques such as Real-Time Kinematics (RTK) or overlooked in Standard Point Positioning (SPP).

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) encompass over 9000 chemicals utilized in various industrial and commercial applications. However, the quantification of PFAS using standard commercial analytical methods is currently limited to <50 selected compounds. To address this issue, the total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay was developed, allowing for the oxidative conversion of previously undetectable PFAS precursors into measurable PFAS.

Petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) contamination in soil is ubiquitous and poses harmful consequences to many organisms. The toxicity of PHC-impacted soil is difficult to predict due to variations in mixture composition and the impacts of natural weathering processes. Hence, high-throughput methods to assess PHC-impacted soils is required to expedite land management decisions.

Background: The earliest days of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada were marked by a significant surge in COVID-19 cases and COVID-19-related deaths among residents of long-term care facilities (LTCFs). As part of Canada's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel were mobilized for an initial emergency domestic deployment to the hardest-hit LTCFs (Operation LASER LTCF) to support the remaining civilian staff in ensuring the continued delivery of care to residents. Akin to what was observed following past CAF international humanitarian missions, there was an expected increased risk of exposure to multiple stressors that may be psychologically traumatic and potentially morally injurious in nature (ie, related to core values, eg, witnessing human suffering).

Purpose: To evaluate the contribution of splenius capitis, sternocleidomastoid, and upper fibers of trapezius activation to the gains in rate of force development (RFD) of the head and neck during maximum voluntary ballistic contractions.
Methods: RFD gain was facilitated by a single-session intervention for maximum voluntary ballistic contractions in the anterior direction, oriented at 45° to the midsagittal plane, which require active restraint of axial rotation. Muscle activation for the agonist (sternocleidomastoid) and 2 antagonists (splenius capitis and upper fibers of trapezius) was evaluated.
