Background: There is a paucity of data examining anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) with pedicle-screw fixation (ALIF-PSF) or without (standalone, sa-ALIF) for the treatment of low-grade isthmic spondylolisthesis (IS). Treating pathology with sa-ALIF reduces costs, operative times, and posterior access morbidity. This study aimed to investigate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of sa-ALIF for the management of low-grade IS compared with an ALIF-PSF cohort.

Psychologists have long been intrigued by decision-induced changes in preferences where making a decision strengthens one's relative preference between more and less preferred options. This phenomenon has been explained through two prominent theories: a dissonance account, which suggests that it results from the decision maker's attempt to minimize an unpleasant emotional-motivational state of "dissonance," and an inference account, which posits that it reflects a process of inferring and updating one's "true" preferences. In the current research, we investigate whether, how, and why framing a decision as a choice or a rejection influences decision-induced preference modulation.

Mulberry is a critical economic tree with a high diversity of germplasm resources. However, the lack of primary data on genome size, chromosome number, and ploidy for this species limits the exploitation of mulberry resources. In this study, the genome size of 323 mulberry germplasm resources were examined using flow cytometry and chromosome numbers analyzed.

Impaired balance is a key symptom following acute concussion. Unfortunately, the recommended clinical balance assessment lacks sensitivity and discriminative ability, relying on the experience of the clinician for interpretation. The aim of this pilot study is to explore smartphone technology to remotely assess balance impairment in people with acute concussion.

The rising demand for premium quality fruits and vegetables has resulted in an increased necessity for the advancement in active food packaging. This study aimed to develop eugenol-loaded Ag@MOF/poly(lactic acid) (Ag@MOF-EU/PLA) composite films to assess their efficacy in preserving zucchini. The results revealed that Ag@MOF-EU can be uniformly distributed within the PLA matrix, which significantly enhanced the tensile strength, hydrophobicity, and UV-blocking capacity of PLA films, and at the same time had no significant effect on the thermal properties and WVP of the PLA films.

Beached Plastic Debris Index; a modern index for detecting plastics on beaches.

Mar Pollut Bull

December 2024

ITC, University of Twente, Hengelosestraat 99, Enschede 7514 AE, Netherlands. Electronic address:

Plastic pollution on shorelines poses a significant threat to coastal ecosystems, underscoring the urgent need for scalable detection methods to facilitate debris removal. In this study, the Beached Plastic Debris Index (BPDI) was developed to detect plastic accumulation on beaches using shortwave infrared spectral features. To validate the BPDI, plastic targets with varying sub-pixel covers were placed on a sand spit and captured using WorldView-3 satellite imagery.

This study aimed to address the challenge of extending the shelf life of Boletus wild mushrooms, which are prone to environmental and microbial contamination. An antibacterial film composed of polylactic acid (PLA) and mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with citral (CMP film) was developed for this purpose. Fifteen quality indices were assessed, and the data were integrated using AHP and TOPSIS to evaluate the film's efficacy.

Background: Australian nursing programs aim to introduce students to digital health requirements for practice. However, innovation in digital health is more dynamic than education providers' ability to respond. It is uncertain whether what is taught and demonstrated in nursing programs meets the needs and expectations of clinicians with regard to the capability of the nurse graduates.

Despite advances in treatment, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in patients with diabetes. Even when risk factors are mitigated, the disease progresses, and thus, newer targets need to be identified that directly inhibit the underlying pathobiology of atherosclerosis in diabetes. A single-cell sequencing approach was used to distinguish the proatherogenic transcriptional profile in aortic cells in diabetes using a streptozotocin-induced diabetic Apoe-/- mouse model.

Smart Indicator Film Based on Sodium Alginate/Polyvinyl Alcohol/TiO Containing Purple Garlic Peel Extract for Visual Monitoring of Beef Freshness.

Polymers (Basel)

November 2023

Green Preparation Technology of Biobased Materials National & Local Joint Engineering Research Center, Yunnan Minzu University, Kunming 650500, China.

The aim of this study was to prepare a novel pH-sensitive smart film based on the addition of purple garlic peel extract (PGE) and TiO nanoparticles in a sodium alginate (SA)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to monitor the freshness of beef. FT-IR spectroscopy revealed the formation of stronger interaction forces between PVA/SA, PGE, and TiO nanoparticles, which showed good compatibility. In addition, the addition of PGE improved the tensile strength and elongation at break of the composite film, especially in different pH environments, and the color response was obvious.

The sound absorption coefficient (SAC) of materials measured in a reverberation room is affected by both the intrinsic properties of the material and geometrical dimensions of the sample. A different size of the same material may produce a different SAC primarily due to the edge effect phenomenon. In this research, the experimental data from multiple laboratories was analyzed to evaluate the influence of the edge effect.
