Purpose: Renal transplantation (RT) is not recommended above BMI 40 kg/m as post-operative risks (delayed graft function, wound complications) are increased. Bariatric surgery (BS) results in sustained long-term weight loss. However, renal failure (RF) patients are theoretically higher risk candidates.

June 2023

Musculoskeletal Radiology Department, Chapel Allerton Hospital, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Leeds, United Kingdom.

Ankle impingement syndromes are a well-recognized cause of chronic ankle symptoms in both the elite athletic and general population. They comprise several distinct clinical entities with associated radiologic findings. Originally described in the 1950s, advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasonography have allowed musculoskeletal (MSK) radiologists to further their understanding of these syndromes and the range of imaging-associated features.

Imaging of Rheumatological Disorders.

Magn Reson Imaging Clin N Am

May 2023

Chapel Allerton Hospital, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Leeds, UK; NIHR Biomedical Research Centre Leeds, Chapel Allerton Hospital Leeds, LS4 7SA, UK.

Early diagnosis and treatment of many rheumatological conditions has become crucial in order that drug therapies can be started before irreversible structural damage occurs. Both MR imaging and ultrasound play a valid role in the pathway of many of these conditions. The imaging findings as well as relative merits are described in this article as well as limitations that must be kept in mind when interpreting the imaging.

We review the diagnosis, management and potential pitfalls of acute soft tissue injuries in the skeletally immature knee, including anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, meniscal injuries, patellar dislocation and patellofemoral instability (PFI). There has been an increasing incidence of such injuries in the paediatric population, and controversy remains regarding their treatment. We summarise evidence-based treatments for these injuries and discuss strategies to minimise complications as the child reaches skeletal maturity.

The role of anterolateral augmentation in primary ACL reconstruction.

J Clin Orthop Trauma

May 2020

Department of Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery, Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust, University Hospital Lewisham, High Street, London, SE13 6LH, UK.

The anterolateral soft tissue envelope of the knee has long been recognised as a key stabilising structure. Once the mainstay of operative management of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture, interest in the area fell away with the advent of intraarticular arthroscopic reconstruction. Renewed interest in these structures together with cadaveric data evidencing the potential for restoration of near normal knee biomechanics following ACL and anterolateral soft tissue reconstruction has driven current concepts and development of operative techniques.

Introduction: There is an increasing trend to investigate plantar heel pain with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan though plantar fasciitis is the most common cause. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the role of MRI in patients presenting with plantar heel pain.

Methods: Case notes and MRI scans of 141 patients with a clinical diagnosis of plantar fasciitis were reviewed retrospectively.

There has been a significant increase in the number of frail older patients diagnosed with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) over the past thirty years. These elderly patients have high levels of comorbidity, and as a consequence the face of renal medicine is changing-There is an increasing need to focus on traditionally geriatric areas of expertise such as falls prevention and rehabilitation, and to shift our emphasis onto improving patient well-being rather than longevity. Over the past decade, many nephrologists have found that they are already acting as de facto "amateur geriatricians".
