Plant species diversity and identity can significantly modify litter decomposition, but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive, particularly for root litter. Here, we aimed to disentangle the mechanisms by which plant species diversity alters root litter decomposition. We hypothesised that (1) interactions between species in mixed communities result in litter that decomposes faster than litter produced in monocultures; (2) litter decomposition is accelerated in the presence of living plants, especially when the litter and living plant identities are matched (known as home-field advantage).

Back pain is a global epidemiological and socioeconomic problem often associated with intervertebral disc degeneration; a condition believed to initiate in the nucleus pulposus (NP). There is considerable interest in developing early therapeutic interventions to target the NP and halt degeneration. Rat caudal models of disc degeneration have demonstrated significant utility in the study of disease progression and its impact on tissue structure, composition, and mechanical performance.

Although the biological mechanisms underpinning severe malaria pathophysiology remain incompletely understood, studies have shown that cytoadhesion of malaria-infected erythrocytes to endothelial cells (ECs) within the cerebral microvasculature represents a key step in this process. Furthermore, these studies have also highlighted that marked EC activation, with secretion of Weibel-Palade bodies (WPBs), occurs at a remarkably early stage following malaria infection.

Introduction: Preoperative testing for COVID-19 has become widely established to avoid inadvertent surgery on patients with COVID-19 and prevent hospital outbreaks.
Methods: A prospective cross sectional study was carried out in two university hospitals examining the pre-operative protocols for patients undergoing otolaryngology surgery and the incidence of COVID-19 within 30 days of surgery in patients and the otolaryngologists performing surgery.
Results: One hundred and seventy-three patients were recruited.

Tauopathies are a group of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by the pathological aggregation of the microtubule-associated protein tau. These include more than 20 diseases, with Alzheimer's disease being the most frequent. While pathological and neurotoxic effects of tau are well documented, the mechanisms by which tau can promote neurodegeneration are less clear.
