Background The COVID-19 pandemic led many units to increase their utilization of nonoperative management (NOM) of acute appendicitis, with the literature showing its non-inferiority when compared to operative management (OM). Therefore, we compared NOM to OM against standard guidelines in order to ascertain the effectiveness of NOM. Primary outcomes were rates of admission, complications, hospital length of stay (LOS), and the incidence of colonic malignancy following NOM upon subsequent bowel evaluation using colonoscopy and/or computed tomography (CT) scan.

Coronary artery calcification is frequently encountered during percutaneous coronary intervention and its presence is associated with a higher risk of stent under-expansion which has been associated with long-term risk of stent failure. There are several different calcium modification strategies available, whether they be balloon-based devices (cutting/scoring and intravascular lithotripsy) or atherectomy devices (orbital atherectomy, rotational atherectomy, excimer laser coronary atherectomy) that are established for the modification of coronary calcification. Each strategy applies a different mechanism of action for calcium modulation and consequently the potential to combine modifying tools may offer synergistic advantages over device monotherapy.

Purpose: Detection of molecular residual disease (MRD) allows for the identification of breast cancer patients at high-risk of recurrence, with the potential that early initiation of treatment at early stages of relapse could improve patient outcomes. The Invitae Personalized Cancer Monitoring™ assay (PCM) is a newly developed next-generation sequencing approach that utilizes up to 50 patient-specific, tumor-informed DNA variants, to detect circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA). The ability of the PCM assay to detect MRD before clinical relapse was evaluated.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the significance of cardiac troponin (cTn) levels in predicting mortality in patients with Takotsubo syndrome (TTS), analyzing data from the International Takotsubo Registry.
  • It identifies that a cTn increase greater than 28.8 times the upper reference limit signals clinically relevant myocardial injury, correlating with a higher risk of mortality over 5 years (adjusted HR 1.58).
  • The findings enhance understanding of patient risk profiles in TTS, emphasizing the need for increased monitoring and follow-up for those with significant troponin elevations.

Background: Sexual violence is prevalent in higher education institutions in Nigeria and stakeholders have encouraged staff and students to blow the whistle whenever they fall victim to or are aware of any sexual violence case. However, there is lack of data about whether the staff and students of these institutions have the intention to blow the whistle internally (within the institution) or not. There is also a lack of data on the existing reporting mechanisms or preferred whistleblowing mechanisms in these institutions.

EMBO Mol Med

October 2024

Centre for Genomics and Child Health, Blizard Institute, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, Newark Street, London, E12AT, UK.

Article Synopsis
  • - Dyskeratosis congenita (DC) is a rare inherited condition that leads to bone marrow failure and is largely linked to mutations affecting telomere biology, with about 35% of cases having unidentified genetic causes.
  • - Research on a wide range of DC and 'DC-like' cases uncovered new pathogenic variants, including findings in the novel X-linked gene POLA1 and in known genes POT1 and ZCCHC8, enhancing the understanding of the genetic basis of these disorders.
  • - Functional studies indicated that the new variants in POLA1 and POT1 disrupt crucial protein interactions that are essential for telomere maintenance, while ZCCHC8 variants lead to inflammation in patients, thereby contributing to the understanding of

Association of bradykinin receptor 2 (BDKRB2) variants with physical performance and muscle mass: Findings from the LACE sarcopenia trial.

PLoS One

August 2024

Cardiovascular and Respiratory Interface Section, National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London, South Kensington Campus, London, United Kingdom.

Introduction: Understanding genetic contributors to sarcopenia (age-related loss of muscle strength and mass) is key to finding effective therapies. Variants of the bradykinin receptor 2 (BDKRB2) have been linked to athletic and muscle performance. The rs1799722-9 and rs5810761 T alleles have been shown to be overrepresented in endurance athletes, possibly due to increased transcriptional rates of the receptor.
