Context: Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) are defined by their distressing effect on patients' day-to-day life. Given the pressures on secondary care resources, LUTS may be overlooked or inadequately assessed and therefore patients may be burdened for an extended period before treatment.

Methods: In a debate held at the International Consultation on Incontinence Research Society (ICI-RS) meeting in Bristol in June 2024, we considered how new technologies might contribute to an expedited, dignified and effective investigation of LUTS.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of oral mucosa is increasingly affecting younger individuals, particularly in the tongue. SCC can develop from disorders like oral lichen planus (OLP). This case highlights the first known instance of OLP and SCC in a pregnant woman, suggesting hormonal changes and HPV as possible risk factors.

Department of Paediatric Otolaryngology, Robert Debre Hospital, Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris (APHP), Paris Cité University, Paris, France; Center for Balance Evaluation in Children (EFEE), Department of Paediatric Otolaryngology, Robert Debre Hospital, Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris (APHP), Paris Cité University, Paris, France.

Objectives: To describe the inner ear sectors after an inner ear MRI protocol and search for the presence of endolymphatic pressure anomaly in patients presenting with a congenital CMV infection and audio-vestibular dysfunction.

Methods: A 3D FLAIR MRI sequence, 4 h after gadolinium injection, was performed in patients with sensory-neural hearing loss secondary to a congenital CMV infection in order to analyse the morphology of the endolymphatic space.

Results: Two patients presented with a unilateral SNHL and 4 patients a bilateral SNHL.

Article Synopsis
  • - The French Society of Rheumatology and the French Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation aimed to create recommendations for non-drug treatments for knee osteoarthritis due to their inadequate consideration in care.
  • - A systematic review of literature was conducted, followed by discussions among experts to draft and evaluate a list of recommendations for managing knee OA non-pharmacologically.
  • - Five key principles were established, emphasizing a combination of treatments, personalized management, adherence, appropriate exercise, and education, alongside specific recommendations for 11 modalities like braces, physical therapy, and weight loss.

: Periodontal therapy aims to arrest the progression of periodontal diseases and possibly to regenerate the periodontal apparatus. To shift healing from repair to regeneration, the blood clot that fills the periodontal defect and remains in contact with structures such as tooth root, mucosa and bone needs to be stable, which is a reason why the treatment of non-containing periodontal bone defects, in which the clot may undergo displacement, is challenging. The gingival soft tissue, properly sutured, may act as a wall for blood clot stabilization.

Service de médecine interne, hôpital Saint-Antoine, AP-HP, Sorbonne université, 184, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine, 75012 Paris, France. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • * It typically affects Caucasians equally across genders and can also be associated with other autoimmune diseases like polyarteritis nodosa.
  • * While ocular symptoms often have a good prognosis with potential recovery of vision, cochleo-vestibular issues can lead to serious and irreversible hearing loss, and treatment options are not well-established due to the condition's rarity.

Risky dietary behaviors, particularly excessive sugar consumption, significantly contribute to dental caries. Dental practitioners are tasked with detecting and managing these behaviors to effectively treat caries and prevent recurrences. Although dietary assessment tools exist to identify such behaviors, they have limits.

Anodized SLM Ti6Al4V surfaces: influence of surface characteristics on NTs growth and resulted surfaces properties.

J Mater Chem B

November 2024

PIMM Laboratory, Arts et Métiers Institute of Technology, CNRS, CNAM, HESAM University, 151 Bd de l'Hôpital, 75013 PARIS, France.

Article Synopsis
  • TiO nanotubes formed on titanium surfaces through electrochemical anodization (EA) show potential for enhancing dental implant integration.
  • The study investigates how the microstructure of heat-treated selective laser melted (SLM) Ti6Al4V impacts nanotube growth and surface properties, including roughness and wettability.
  • Results indicate that the nanotube dimensions increase with voltage, the α phase promotes TiO layer development, and modifications enhance surface reactivity and bioactivity for dental applications.

Background: Patients with acute basilar artery occlusion (BAO) and low-to-moderate symptoms (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale [NIHSS] < 10) are poorly represented in thrombectomy trials. Our objective is to compare thrombectomy and best medical management (BMT) in this population.

Methods: We compared data of all consecutive patients presenting with an initial NIHSS < 10 and acute symptomatic BAO included in two registries.

Objective: Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) is an oral potentially malignant disorder. Forms that affect only one tissue are poorly studied, especially the exclusively gingival PVL (gPVL), which may have a more increased malignant transformation potential. The aim of the present study was to characterise the gPVL and its risk of malignant transformation to better raise awareness of this specific disorder.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a powered alternating pressure air mattress (P-APAM) in preventing pressure injuries (PIs) among patients classified as medium to high risk.
  • Conducted as a noncomparative observational study involving 86 patients in nursing homes and a long-term care facility in France, the research monitored patients for 35 days while using the P-APAM, with a focus on PI development on specific body areas.
  • Results showed a 0% incidence of PIs, with high levels of patient satisfaction regarding comfort, stability, and noise level of the mattress, supporting its clinical value in PI prevention when used with standard care practices.

Understanding why restrictive trial eligibility criteria are inappropriate.

Neurochirurgie

November 2024

University of Alberta Hospital, Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery, Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Background: An important difference between explanatory and pragmatic clinical trials concerns eligibility criteria. Eligibility criteria are restrictive in explanatory trials, while pragmatic trials are more inclusive or even all-inclusive.

Methods: To better understand the diverging views regarding eligibility criteria, we examine the contrast between theoretical and clinical medicine, and 3 different research contexts: laboratory research, population studies and clinical trials.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two MRI techniques, contrast-enhanced fat-suppressed 3D FLAIR and coronal T2-weighted imaging, in diagnosing optic neuritis in patients with acute visual loss.
  • A total of 1,023 patients were analyzed, and both imaging methods successfully identified optic nerve hyperintensities in 94% of those diagnosed with optic neuritis, showing good sensitivity (94%) and accuracy (89%).
  • The 3D FLAIR images revealed significantly more optic disc hypersignals (30%) compared to coronal T2-weighted images (0.75%), and artifacts were more frequent in the T2-weighted images, indicating that 3D FLAIR

Sleep is fundamental for health and well-being. An adequate amount and quality of sleep is a cardinal component of a healthy lifestyle at the basis of the prevention of many non-communicable chronic diseases. Recent evidence suggests that sleep disorders, particularly obstructive sleep apnea, represent an emerging risk factor for periodontal health.

Background: Palatal groove represents a relatively uncommon developmental root anomaly, usually found on the palatal aspect of maxillary incisors. While its origin is controversial, its presence predisposes to severe periodontal defects.

Aim: This study aimed to provide a systematic review of the literature focusing on the varied diagnostic techniques and treatment modalities for periodontal lesions arising from the presence of palatal groove.
