Article Synopsis
  • The study reviews surgical treatment outcomes for osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the knee, focusing on return to sports (RTS) rates and postoperative results in both skeletally mature and immature patients.
  • A systematic analysis of six studies revealed a wide range of RTS rates, with Osteochondral Autograft Transfer System (OATS) procedures achieving the highest success and microfracture showing the lowest.
  • The findings suggest that while OATS has a 100% RTS rate, both open and arthroscopic techniques provided satisfactory outcomes in skeletally immature patients, although arthroscopic fixation correlated with higher revision surgery rates.

Purpose: To assess the difference in perceived readiness to return to sport (RTS) within the first year postoperative period between individuals undergoing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with bone-patellar tendon-bone (BTB) autografts or allografts.

Methods: This was a prospective cohort study of patients undergoing primary ACL reconstruction done either with BTB autograft or allograft from 2010 to 2018. Skeletally mature patients aged 14 to 25 were eligible for inclusion.

»: As total joint arthroplasty volume continues to grow nationwide, more uncommon complications such as metal implant hypersensitivity are reported with greater frequency in the literature.

»: Metal hypersensitivity is a challenging diagnosis given the potentially vague symptomology. It should be considered a diagnosis of exclusion, necessitating careful consideration of other potential etiologies of a failing implant before arriving at the final diagnosis of metal hypersensitivity.

Background: The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has left a lasting mark on medicine globally.

Methods: Here we outline the steps that the Lenox Hill Hospital/Northwell Health Neurosurgery Department-located within the epicenter of the pandemic in New York City-is currently taking to recover our neurosurgical efforts in the age of COVID-19.

Results: We outline measurable milestones to identify the transition to the recovery period and hope these recommendations may serve as a framework for an effective path forward.

Background: The etiology of patellar component loosening can be multifactorial, including component malposition, trauma, infection, and poor implant design. These cases may be managed with isolated patellar component revision or simultaneous patellar component with femoral and/or tibial component revision. Isolated patellar revision in the setting of aseptic loosening historically has had limited success with high rates of repeat revision.

Background: The need for outpatient physical therapy (OPPT) has been questioned following primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Recent studies have suggested that similar outcomes may be possible with self-directed home exercise programs (HEP) compared to OPPT, which can be costly to both the patient and healthcare system. The aim of the present study is to compare the safety, efficacy, and health economics of formal OPPT with self-directed home exercises after TKA following a protocol change.
