Background: Health care workers (HCW) in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) frequently come into contact with carriers of methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant (MRSA) strains and may acquire and transmit them to patients. However, there is little data on MSSA and MRSA colonization of medical personnel in the emergency services. Additionally, few studies have analyzed the association between personal hygiene of staff and colonization.

ZIK plasmatis, Leibniz-Institute for Plasma Science and Technology (INP), a member of the Leibniz Health Technologies Research Alliance, Felix-Hausdorff-Str. 2, 17489 Greifswald, Germany; Department of Clinic and Policlinic for Dermatology and Venerology, Rostock University Medical Center, Strempelstr. 13, 18057 Rostock, Germany. Electronic address:

Introduction: Hippo is a signaling pathway that is evolutionarily conserved and plays critical roles in wound healing and tissue regeneration. Disruption of the transcriptional activity of both Hippo-associated factors, the yes-associated protein (YAP), and the transcriptional co-activator with PDZ binding motif (TAZ) has been associated with cardiovascular diseases, fibrosis, and cancer. This makes the Hippo pathway an appealing target for therapeutic interventions.

Background: An increase in epidural pressure around the stenosis has been observed in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) with positive signs of sedimentation or redundant nerve roots. Further analysis of the pressure conditions in the stenotic area would be of great interest. We hypothesized that it would be possible to determine the physiological parameters of the epidural pulse wave and its course in pathological stenosis as a basis for objective identification of LSS based on pressure using a new measuring method with continuous spatial and temporal resolution.

Type-2 diabetes (T2D) is a metabolic disorder that is considered a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cognitive impairment can arise due to hypoglycemia associated with T2D, and hyperamylinemia associated with insulin resistance can enhance AD pathology. We explored whether changes occur in the hippocampus in aging (6-12 months old) female V-Lep-/- transgenic (tg) mice, comprising an animal model of T2D.

The role of long-term parenteral support in patients with underlying benign conditions who do not have intestinal failure (IF) is contentious, not least since there are clear benefits in utilising the oral or enteral route for nutritional support. Furthermore, the risks of long-term home parenteral nutrition (HPN) are significant, with significant impacts on morbidity and mortality. There has, however, been a recent upsurge of the use of HPN in patients with conditions such as gastro-intestinal neuromuscular disorders, opioid bowel dysfunction, disorders of gut-brain interaction and possibly eating disorders, who do not have IF.

Background And Objective: Transcranial brain parenchyma sonography (TCS) has been recommended as a tool for the early and differential diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) in German and European clinical guidelines. Still, the brain structures to be examined for the diagnostic questions and the requirements for being a qualified investigator were not specified in detail. These issues have now been addressed in the 2023 update of the clinical guideline on PD by the German Society of Neurology (DGN).

Increasing evidence suggests the role of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) in regulating antitumor immune effects and immunosuppression. RONS modify biomolecules and induce oxidative post-translational modifications (oxPTM) on proteins that can alarm phagocytes. However, it is unclear if and how protein oxidation by technical means could be a strategy to foster antitumor immunity and therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • Elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) treatment for cystic fibrosis can lead to liver-related side effects, particularly in patients with Gilbert's syndrome, a genetic condition that elevates bilirubin levels.
  • A case series involving six cystic fibrosis patients revealed that Gilbert's syndrome was often unmasked after starting ETI, causing varying degrees of hepatic dysfunction but allowing most to continue treatment, some at adjusted dosages.
  • Physicians should recognize that while Gilbert's syndrome may seem like a risk factor for liver issues during ETI therapy, it is not a reason to stop treatment, and patients can still benefit from ETI despite liver-related complications.

A prevailing animal model currently used to study severe human diseases like obstructive cholestasis, primary biliary or sclerosing cholangitis, biliary atresia, and acute liver injury is the common bile duct ligation (cBDL). Modifications of this model include ligation of the left hepatic bile duct (pBDL) or ligation of the left bile duct with the corresponding left hepatic artery (pBDL+pAL). Both modifications induce cholestasis only in the left liver lobe.

  • Recent research indicates that removing dead tissue (necrotic tissue) during surgery for ischemic cerebellar stroke may improve recovery more than just removing pressure (decompressive surgery) alone, but optimal procedures and outcomes related to the amount of tissue removed haven't been well-studied.* -
  • This study analyzed data from 91 patients who had surgery for ischemic cerebellar stroke, measuring the volume of infarcted tissue before and after operations, and evaluating functionality at 3 months post-surgery using a standardized ranking scale.* -
  • Results showed that patients who had necrosectomy (removal of necrotic tissue) were significantly more likely to achieve favorable recovery outcomes, with a specific threshold of

The impact of MICB mismatches in unrelated haematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

HLA

June 2024

Institute of Clinical Transfusion Medicine and Immunogenetics Ulm, German Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service, Baden Wuerttemberg - Hessen, Ulm, and University Hospital Ulm, Ulm, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • MICA polymorphisms are linked to higher rates of acute GvHD and poor outcomes in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), with MICB's role still being unclear.
  • Researchers analyzed a large cohort for MICB polymorphisms, assessing how MICB matching affects outcomes after unrelated HSCT, finding that 69.2% were 10/10 HLA matched.
  • In the 9/10 HLA matched group, MICB mismatches led to worse disease-free survival and relapse-free survival, while MICA mismatches did not significantly impact outcomes, suggesting MICB typing might aid in donor selection among 9/10 matched donors.

A three-dimensional (3D) understanding of muscle attachment footprints became increasingly relevant for musculoskeletal modeling. The established method to project attachments as points ignores patient-specific individuality. Research focuses on investigating certain muscle groups rather than comprehensively studying all muscles spanning a joint.

The therapeutic potential of cold physical gas plasma operated at atmospheric pressure in oncology has been thoroughly demonstrated in numerous preclinical studies. The cytotoxic effect on malignant cells has been attributed mainly to biologically active plasma-generated compounds, namely, reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. The intracellular accumulation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species interferes strongly with the antioxidant defense system of malignant cells, activating multiple signaling cascades and inevitably leading to oxidative stress-induced cell death.
