Objectives: To validate and test the generalisability of the SASKit-ML pipeline, a prepublished feature selection and machine learning pipeline for the prediction of health deterioration after a stroke or pancreatic adenocarcinoma event, by using it to identify biomarkers of health deterioration in chronic disease.
Design: This is a validation study using a predefined protocol applied to multiple publicly available datasets, including longitudinal data from cohorts with type 2 diabetes (T2D), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and various cancers. The datasets were chosen to mimic as closely as possible the SASKit cohort, a prospective, longitudinal cohort study.

Background/objectives: According to the guidelines of the EndoCert initiative, certified maximum-care arthroplasty centers (ACmax) are obliged to admit patients from certified arthroplasty centers (AC) if these patients need to be transferred to the more specialized ACmax due to difficult replacement and revision procedures as well as after complications in primary care that are beyond the expertise of the smaller centers. This study investigated whether the cohort of transferred patients differed from the patients directly recruited at the ACmax for factors such as severity of diagnosis, comorbidities or outcome. The aim was to determine whether transferred patients increased the resource requirements for the ACmax.

Purpose: To characterize the 3D geometry of the distal tibia resection area from healthy individuals using CT-based digital implantation for proper preoperative sizing of TAA tibia component placement.
Methods: Standardized CT images of healthy ankle joints serving as intra-individual references for treatment of contralateral injuries were identified. The tibial cross section dedicated to virtually host the tibial component was digitally prepared, and the size of the virtual contact surface was calculated.

There is considerable evidence that action potentials are accompanied by "intrinsic optical signals", such as a nanometer-scale motion of the cell membrane. Here we present ChiSCAT, a technically simple imaging scheme that detects such signals with interferometric sensitivity. ChiSCAT combines illumination by a aotic speckle pattern and interferometric scattering microscopy () to sensitively detect motion in any direction.

Background: Liquid biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure investigating tumor mutations.
Methods: In our retrospective study, we investigated whether molecular therapy monitoring of patients receiving neoadjuvant radio(chemo)therapy on a daily routine is possible in 17 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer. Six patients received short-course radiotherapy (5 × 5 Gy) with subsequent surgery, six patients were treated according RAPIDO protocol with short-course radiotherapy followed by chemotherapy (FOLFOX4) and subsequent surgery and five patients received conventional neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy with 5-FU followed by surgery.

Hydrogels are extensively used in the biomedical field due to their highly valued properties, biocompatibility and antimicrobial activity and resistance to rheological stress. However, determining an efficient sterilization protocol that does not compromise the functional properties of hydrogels is one of the challenges researchers face when developing a material for a medical application. In this work, conventional sterilization methods (steam-, radiation- and gas sterilization) were investigated regarding the influence on the degree of swelling, mechanical performance and chemical effects on the poly 3-sulfopropyl acrylate potassium (pAESO) hydrogel, which is a promising representative for biomedical engineering applications.

Background And Objective: The prognostic value of declining prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels is under investigation in patients with prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-positive metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) receiving PSMA-targeted radioligand therapy with [Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 (Lu-PSMA-617). This post hoc analysis of the phase 3 VISION trial aimed to evaluate associations between PSA decline and clinical and patient-reported outcomes in patients receiving Lu-PSMA-617.
Methods: Of 831 enrolled patients with PSMA-positive progressive mCRPC treated previously with one or more androgen receptor pathway inhibitors and one to two taxanes, 551 were randomised to Lu-PSMA-617 plus protocol-permitted standard of care (SoC).

Phosphoglycerylation is a non-enzymatic protein modification in which a phosphoglyceryl moiety is covalently bound to the ε-amino group of lysine. It is enriched in glycolytic enzymes from humans and mice and is thought to provide a feedback mechanism for regulating glycolytic flux. We report the first proteomic analysis of this post-translational modification in bacteria by profiling phosphoglyceryl-lysine during the growth of in different culture media.

The COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) pandemic had a severe impact on public health worldwide. A rare but serious complication after administration of adenoviral vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 (AstraZeneca-Oxford and Johnson & Johnson) is vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT), which can lead to serious complications such as cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). CVST itself can cause subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and/or intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), leading to high mortality due to herniation of brain parenchyma.
