Nutrition has long been known to have a profound influence on reproductive performance of female cattle, but the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. We show that methylated lysine 9 of histone H3 (Me9H3) is a marker of heterochromatin in divergent animal species. It localises to both constitutive and facultative heterochromatin and replicates late in S-phase of the cell cycle. Significantly, Me9H3 is enriched in the inactive mammalian X chromosome (Xi) in female cells, as well as in the XY body during meiosis in the male, and forms a G-band pattern along the arms of the autosomes.

The neural mechanisms involved in the compensatory hyperphagia exhibited by many vertebrate species after a fast are not fully understood but, in mammals, appear to involve nutritionally-sensitive neurons that co-express neuropeptide Y (NPY) and agouti-related protein (AGRP) in the infundibular hypothalamus. Previous studies have noted that the estimated positions of a large proportion of mapped quantitative trait loci (QTLs) coincide with marker locations and have suggested that this indicates a bias in the mapping methodology. In this study we predict the expected proportion of QTLs with positions estimated to be at the location of a marker and further examine the problem using simulated data. The results show that the higher proportion of putative QTLs estimated to be at marker positions compared with non-marker positions is an expected consequence of the estimation methods.

Embryo transfer and pregnancy maintenance strategies in pigs were evaluated with reference to situations in which limited numbers of viable embryos or micromanipulated embryos are available, such as pig cloning. Development of embryos with compromised zona pellucida was compared with development of embryos with intact zona pellucida. Micromanipulation had no effect on blastocyst production rates after development in vivo or in vitro, but development in vivo improved the number of embryos reaching the blastocyst stage.

The optimum dose rates of betamethasone, dexamethasone (sodium phosphate) and methylprednisolone (acetate salt) were determined for the treatment of inflammatory pain in domestic fowl using the microcrystalline sodium urate model of articular pain. The response criteria were the changes in behavioural profiles and pain-related activity over 60 minutes commencing 1 hour after an intra-articular injection of sodium urate and a course of intramuscular injections of a range of doses of each drug on the previous 2 days. Haseman and Elston (1972) developed a robust regression method for the detection of linkage between a marker and a quantitative trait locus (QTL) using sib pair data. The principle underlying this method is that the difference in phenotypes between pairs of sibs becomes larger as they share a decreasing number of alleles at a particular QTL identical by descent (IBD) from their parents. This paper demonstrates the use of stochastic genetic epidemiological models for quantifying the consequences of selecting animals for resistance to a microparasitic infectious disease. The model is relevant for many classes of infectious diseases where sporadic epidemics occur, and it is a powerful tool for investigating the costs, benefits, and risks associated with breeding for resistance to specific diseases. The model is parameterized for transmissible gastroenteritis, a viral disease affecting pigs, and selection for resistance to this disease on a structured pig farm is simulated.

A stochastic model describing disease transmission dynamics for a microparasitic infection in a structured domestic animal population is developed and applied to hypothetical epidemics on a pig farm. Characterizing causal molecular defects in mouse models of overgrowth or dwarfism helps to identify the key genes and pathways that regulate the growth process. We report here the molecular basis for high growth (hg), a spontaneous mutation that causes a 30-50% increase in postnatal growth. We conclude that hg is an allele of the suppressor of cytokine signaling 2 (Socs2), a member of a family of regulators of cytokine signal transduction.

Heifers were assigned either low or high (HE) levels of energy intake and low or high concentrations of dietary crude protein. The effect of these diets on the plasma concentrations of insulin, insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I, and urea on follicular growth and early embryo development is described. We propose that the observed dietary-induced changes in the ovarian IGF system increase bioavailability of intrafollicular IGF, thus increasing the sensitivity of follicles to FSH.
