A systematic review was conducted to identify studies with data for statistical meta-analyses of sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) of ante-mortem and post-mortem diagnostic tests for bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in cattle. Members of a working group (WG) developed and tested search criteria and developed a standardised two-stage review process, to identify primary studies with numerator and denominator data for test performance and an agreed range of covariate data. No limits were applied to year, language, region or type of test in initial searches of electronic databases.

Hydrogen-dependent reduction of carbon dioxide to formic acid offers a promising route to greenhouse gas sequestration, carbon abatement technologies, hydrogen transport and storage, and the sustainable generation of renewable chemical feedstocks [1]. There has been little assessment of the methodological quality of studies measuring the performance (sensitivity and/or specificity) of diagnostic tests for animal diseases. In a systematic review, 190 studies of tests for bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in cattle (published 1934-2009) were assessed by at least one of 18 reviewers using the QUADAS (Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies) checklist adapted for animal disease tests. VETQUADAS (VQ) included items measuring clarity in reporting (n = 3), internal validity (n = 9) and external validity (n = 2).

Bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) in cattle is a global health problem and eradication of the disease requires accurate estimates of diagnostic test performance to optimize their efficiency. The objective of this study was, through statistical meta-analyses, to obtain estimates of sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp), for 14 different ante-mortem and post-mortem diagnostic tests for bTB in cattle. Using data from a systematic review of the scientific literature (published 1934-2009) diagnostic Se and Sp were estimated using Bayesian logistic regression models adjusting for confounding factors.

Branched chain aminotransferase (BCAT) is one of the enzymatic tools of choice for the production of chiral amines or amino acids; especially, non-natural amino acids are of interest as building blocks for the pharmaceutical industry. The expression and subsequent secretion of BCAT counteracts limited cell permeability of target substrates and facilitates downstream processing. Since Pichia pastoris secretes a negligible amount of native proteins and was previously shown to efficiently secrete recombinant proteins, it was chosen as the expression host.

Adeno-associated virus (AAV) capsid assembly occurs in the nucleus. Newly synthesized capsid proteins VP1, VP2 and VP3 contain several basic regions (BRs), which may act as nuclear localization signals (NLSs). Mutation of BR2 and BR3, located at the VP1 and VP2 N termini, marginally reduced nuclear uptake of VP1 or VP2, but not of VP3, when expressed in the context of the whole AAV type 2 (AAV2) genome.

Background: Here, we jointly summarise scientific evidence for genetic variation in resistance to infection with Mycobacterium bovis, the primary agent of bovine tuberculosis (TB), provided by two recent and separate studies of Holstein-Friesian dairy cow populations in Great Britain (GB) and Ireland.
Methods: The studies quantified genetic variation within archived data from field and abattoir surveillance control programmes within each country. These data included results from the single intradermal comparative tuberculin test (SICTT), abattoir inspection for TB lesions and laboratory confirmation of disease status.

This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that supplementation of growing follicles with LH during the early spring transitional period would promote the development of steroidogenically active, dominant follicles with the ability to respond to an ovulatory dose of hCG. Mares during early transition were randomly assigned to receive a subovulatory dose of equine LH (in the form of a purified equine pituitary fraction) or saline (transitional control; n = 7 mares per group) following ablation of all follicles >15 mm. Treatments were administered intravenously every 12 h from the day the largest follicle of the post-ablation wave reached 20 mm until a follicle reached >32 mm, when an ovulatory dose of hCG (3000 IU) was given.

The biology of cells of the mononuclear phagocyte system has been studied extensively in the mouse. Studies of the pig as an experimental model have commonly been consigned to specialist animal science journals. In this review, we consider some of the many ways in which the innate immune systems of humans differ from those of mice, the ways that pigs may address the shortcomings of mice as models for the study of macrophage differentiation and activation in vitro, and the biology of sepsis and other pathologies in the living animal.

A bacteriophage lambda DNA vaccine expressing the small surface antigen (HBsAg) of hepatitis B was compared with Engerix B, a commercially available vaccine based on the homologous recombinant protein (r-HBsAg). Rabbits (five per group) were vaccinated intramuscularly at weeks 0, 5 and 10. Antibody responses against r-HBsAg were measured by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, by limiting dilutions and by subtyping.

Many genomic methodologies rely on the presence and extent of linkage disequilibrium (LD) between markers and genetic variants underlying traits of interest, but the extent of LD in the horse has yet to be comprehensively characterized. In this study, we evaluate the extent and decay of LD in a sample of 817 Thoroughbreds. Horses were genotyped for over 50,000 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers across the genome, with 34,848 autosomal SNPs used in the final analysis.

The QTL were investigated using regression and variance component mapping (VCA) of body weight, muscle and fat depth measurements. In addition, the mode of inheritance of the Texel OAR18 QTL was explored, using data from 4376 Texel sheep, fitting VCA models testing for additive and imprinting effects.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of 28 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in 10 candidate genes previously shown to be associated with quality traits in pigs and cattle. The data set comprised 28 traits recorded on a commercial population of 536 Aberdeen Angus-cross beef cattle. Among the traits, 20 were carcass and sirloin quality related, one mechanical measure of tenderness, and the remaining seven were taste panel assessed sensory traits.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease affecting cattle. Current tests for the detection of BSE are based solely on the only definitive marker of the disease, an abnormal conformer (PrP(d)), of the host encoded prion protein (PrP(c)). Recent evidence that other transmissible spongiform encephalopathy diseases can be present in the absence of PrP(d), coupled with the need to establish pre-mortem diagnostic assays have led to a search for alternative diagnostic approaches.

We collated a large number of published expression studies on mouse haemopoietic cell lineages comprising 304 cell samples from 29 independent experiments performed on a single microarray platform (Affymetrix MOE430-2). This study investigated the effect of a major QTL for resistance to IPN in salmon on performance and production traits. The traits studied were related to growth, fillet and gutted yields, and fat content. Two different analyses were performed: (1) regression of the phenotypic data of the production traits on the predicted number of resistant IPN-QTL alleles in individuals and (2) a variance component analysis using the (co)variance matrix calculated at the putative location of the QTL.
