Long decay length of magnon-polarons in BiFeO/LaSrMnO heterostructures.

Nat Commun

December 2021

Fert Beijing Institute, MIIT Key Laboratory of Spintronics, School of Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering, Beihang University, Beijing, China.

Magnons can transfer information in metals and insulators without Joule heating, and therefore are promising for low-power computation. The on-chip magnonics however suffers from high losses due to limited magnon decay length. In metallic thin films, it is typically on the tens of micrometre length scale.

The traditional sodium desulfurization process for waste lead-acid batteries is beneficial to the environment; however, it is limited by poor economic viability as the cost of desulfurizer is much higher than the value of desulfurization by-products. This study proposes a new closed-loop pre-desulfurization process for lead paste, which consumes only lime as the indirect desulfurizer, produces sodium sulfate as a by-product, and regenerates sodium hydroxide as the direct desulfurizer. The concentration of prepared sodium hydroxide reached 2.

Background: Local recurrence of microinvasive sarcoma or benign aggressive pathologies can be limb- and life-threatening. Although frozen pathology is reliable, tumor microinvasion can be subtle or missed, having an impact on surgical margins and postoperative radiation planning. The authors' service has begun to temporize the tumor bed after primary tumor excision with a wound vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) pending formal margin analysis, with coverage performed in the setting of final negative margins.

The roles of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in the ventilatory responses during and after a hypercapnic gas challenge (HCC, 5% CO, 21% O, 74% N) were assessed in freely-moving female and male wild-type (WT) C57BL6 mice and eNOS knock-out (eNOS-/-) mice of C57BL6 background using whole body plethysmography. HCC elicited an array of ventilatory responses that were similar in male and female WT mice, such as increases in breathing frequency (with falls in inspiratory and expiratory times), and increases in tidal volume, minute ventilation, peak inspiratory and expiratory flows, and inspiratory and expiratory drives. eNOS-/- male mice had smaller increases in minute ventilation, peak inspiratory flow and inspiratory drive, and smaller decreases in inspiratory time than WT males.

Decreases in arterial blood oxygen stimulate increases in minute ventilation via activation of peripheral and central respiratory structures. This study evaluates the role of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in the expression of the ventilatory responses during and following a hypoxic gas challenge (HXC, 10% O, 90% N) in freely moving male and female wild-type (WT) C57BL6 and eNOS knock-out (eNOS-/-) mice. Exposure to HXC caused an array of responses (of similar magnitude and duration) in both male and female WT mice such as, rapid increases in frequency of breathing, tidal volume, minute ventilation and peak inspiratory and expiratory flows, that were subject to pronounced roll-off.

Keck School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, The University of Southern California, 2020 Zonal Avenue, IRD Room 534, Los Angeles, CA, 90033, USA.

Purpose: This study sought to report on the route and gestational age at delivery of gestational carrier (GC) pregnancies with respect to the GCs' prior obstetric history.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of all GC pregnancies from one of the largest surrogacy agencies in California between 2008 and 2018 was performed. Available demographic data and obstetric history, including a history of prior cesarean section (CS) and preterm birth (PTB), were collected for each GC and correlated to outcomes of the index GC pregnancy.

Background: Relapse to smoking is commonly triggered by stress, but behavioral interventions have shown only modest efficacy in preventing stress-related relapse. Continuous digital sensing to detect states of smoking risk and intervention receptivity may make it feasible to increase treatment efficacy by adapting intervention timing.

Objective: Aims are to investigate whether the delivery of a prompt to perform stress management behavior, as compared to no prompt, reduces the likelihood of (a) being stressed and (b) smoking in the subsequent two hours, and (c) whether current stress moderates these effects.

A Prospective Study Evaluating Sleep Quality and Disorders in Post-ARDS Patients.

Sleep Vigil

July 2021

Office of Department of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, Room Number 638, Superspeciality Block, New Delhi, 110029 India.

Article Synopsis
  • Critically ill patients, especially those with ARDS, are highly susceptible to sleep disorders due to factors like pre-existing conditions and the challenging ICU environment.
  • A multi-faceted study utilized several assessment tools (ISI, ESS, PSQI, PSG) to evaluate sleep disturbances in these patients at two points: shortly after admission and six weeks post-discharge.
  • Out of 88 screened patients, 30 were evaluated, showing significant improvements in insomnia severity from the initial admission to the later follow-up, although a significant number continued to experience sleep issues.

  • Intranasal dexmedetomidine combined with sevoflurane anesthesia can effectively reduce emergence agitation, nausea, vomiting, and laryngospasm in children.
  • A meta-analysis of 14 studies involving 1123 patients revealed significant improvements in recovery quality, though some sedation parameters did not show statistically significant differences compared to the control group.
  • The study suggests that a dosage of 2 μg/kg of dexmedetomidine may be optimal for achieving these benefits in clinical settings.

Additive-free hydrothermal leaching method with low environmental burden for screening of strontium in soil.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

October 2021

Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Tohoku University, 6-6-11 Aoba, Aramaki, Aoba-ku, Sendai, 980-8579, Japan.

In this work, hydrothermal leaching was applied to simulated soils (clay minerals vermiculite, montmorillonite, and kaolinite) and actual soils (Terunuma, Japan) to generate organic acids with the objective to develop an additive-free screening method for determination of Sr in soil. Stable strontium (SrCl) was adsorbed onto soils for the study, and ten organic acids (citric, L(+)-tartaric, succinic, oxalic, pyruvic, formic, glycolic, lactic, acetic, and propionic) were evaluated for leaching Sr from simulated soils under hydrothermal conditions (120 °C to 200 °C) at concentrations up to 0.3 M.

Anion ordering enables fast H conduction at low temperatures.

Sci Adv

June 2021

Department of Energy and Hydrocarbon Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University, Nishikyo-ku, Kyoto 615-8510, Japan.

The introduction of chemical disorder by substitutional chemistry into ionic conductors is the most commonly used strategy to stabilize high-symmetric phases while maintaining ionic conductivity at lower temperatures. In recent years, hydride materials have received much attention owing to their potential for new energy applications, but there remains room for development in ionic conductivity below 300°C. Here, we show that layered anion-ordered BaH ( = Cl, Br, and I) exhibit a remarkable conductivity, reaching 1 mS cm at 200°C, with low activation barriers allowing H conduction even at room temperature.
