This paper explores the essential role of pre-pregnancy counselling for women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), focusing on minimising risks and optimising pregnancy outcomes. RA, a prevalent inflammatory arthritis with onset during childbearing years, necessitates targeted preconception counselling to manage disease activity and comorbidities effectively. The counselling ensures medication compatibility and planning around disease flares, and it involves a multidisciplinary team comprising rheumatologists, obstetricians, and other specialists to develop individualised care plans.

: Vulvar epidermolytic hyperkeratosis (EHK) is an exceedingly rare dermatological condition, often presenting as solitary or multiple lesions in the vulvar region. Due to its clinical resemblance to other vulvar disorders, such as condyloma acuminatum, Bowenoid papulosis, and squamous cell carcinoma, vulvar EHK poses significant diagnostic challenges. While individual case reports and small case series have documented instances of vulvar EHK, comprehensive studies systematically consolidating the clinical, histopathological, and therapeutic aspects of this condition remain lacking.

: The aim is to bring attention to the existence of a rare type of trauma of the hand, high-pressure injection injury, that appears to be minor with negligible signs and symptoms within the first hours after the accident, but in reality, produces significant tissue destruction with severe consequences. Recognizing this type of trauma by medical personnel, understanding the mechanisms involved, and knowing the etiological and prognostic factors can lead to early treatment initiation and avoid severe mutilating sequelae. : A retrospective study on 16 patients diagnosed with high-pressure injection injuries, including water, air, paint, paint mixed paint with thinner, petroleum jelly, and lime (washable paint containing calcium oxide).

Every day, a considerable number of new cybersecurity attacks are reported, and the traditional methods of defense struggle to keep up with them. In the current context of the digital era, where industrial environments handle large data volumes, new cybersecurity solutions are required, and intrusion detection systems (IDSs) based on artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are coming up with an answer to this critical issue. This paper presents an approach for implementing a generic model of a network-based intrusion detection system for Industry 4.

The connections between sarcopenia and various chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes (T2DM), metabolic syndrome (MetS), and liver disease have been highlighted recently. There is also a high occurrence of sarcopenia in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) patients, who are often disregarded. Both experimental and clinical findings suggest a complex, bidirectional relationship between MASLD and sarcopenia.

Background/objectives: Agricultural systems face increasing global pressure to address sustainability challenges, particularly regarding land use and environmental protection. In Romania, where traditional diets are heavily dependent on animal-based products, optimizing land use is critical. This study investigates the potential of plant-based diets to reduce agricultural land use, examining scenarios of partial and complete replacement of animal protein with plant protein sources (soy, peas, and potatoes).

Dietary Influences on Gut Microbiota and Their Role in Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD).

Nutrients

December 2024

Department of Biomedical Sciences, College of Medicine and Biological Science, University of Suceava, 720229 Suceava, Romania.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a major contributor to liver-related morbidity, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic complications. Lifestyle interventions, including diet and exercise, are first line in treating MASLD. Dietary approaches such as the low-glycemic-index Mediterranean diet, the ketogenic diet, intermittent fasting, and high fiber diets have demonstrated potential in addressing the metabolic dysfunction underlying this condition.

Chronic gastrointestinal disorders often involve nutritional management strategies. On the one hand, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a condition in which most of the patients experience frequent diet manipulation in order to obtain long term remission. On the other hand, for celiac disease (CelD), diet is the only known treatment strategy so far, requiring a life-long gluten-free diet.

Background/objectives: Magnesium plays a crucial role in immune function, influencing immunoglobulin synthesis, antibody-dependent cytolysis, and other immune processes. In renal transplant patients, magnesium deficiency is primarily induced by calcineurin inhibitor treatment, through the reduction of magnesium transporter proteins in the renal tubules, leading to magnesium loss.

Methods: To assess the correlation between serum magnesium levels and the long-term outcomes of renal graft and transplant recipients, we conducted a retrospective study on 87 patients who have had a transplant for more than 5 years, a period considered immunologically stable.

Electrospinning is a versatile technique for obtaining nano/micro fibers which are able to significantly change the active properties of composite materials and bring in new dimensions to agri-food applications. Composite bio-based packaging materials obtained from whey proteins, functionalized with thyme essential oil (TEO) and reinforced by electrospun polylactic acid (PLA) fibers, represent a promising solution for developing new active food packaging using environmentally friendly materials. The aim of this study is to obtain and characterize one-side-active composite films covered with a PLA fiber mat: (i) WF/G1, WF/G2, and WF/G3 resulting from electrospinning with one needle at different electrospinning times of 90, 150, and 210 min, respectively, and (ii) WF/G4 obtained with two face-to-face needles after 210 min of electrospinning.

The solid waste generated from processing rosehip fruits into jam is valuable due to its rich content in fibres, polyphenols, and carotenoids; it could be valorised as a functional ingredient in a powder form to enrich food products. This study aimed to test its potential as a value-added ingredient, especially to enrich waffle cones with fibres, polyphenols, and carotenoids. In this regard, four formulations of waffle cones were prepared by partially substituting wheat flour with rosehip waste powder at 0%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, reaching concentrations of 0%, 3.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are vital dietary elements that play a significant role in human nutrition. They are highly regarded for their positive contributions to overall health and well-being. Beyond the fact that they provide a substantial supply of energy to the body (a role that saturated fats can also perform), these unsaturated fatty acids and, especially, the essential ones are involved in cell membrane structure, blood pressure regulation, and coagulation; participate in the proper functioning of the immune system and assimilation of fat-soluble vitamins; influence the synthesis of pro- and anti-inflammatory substances; and protect the cardiovascular system.

Triticale grains and brewers' spent grain (BSG) can be new sources to develop food products. From a socio-economical point of view, this fact is important since triticale is easily adapted to the climatic changes and BSG is a low-cost material which may lead to a "zero-waste" desiderate. In this study, dough rheological properties obtained from different triticale cultivars (Ingen 33, Ingen 35, Ingen 54, and Ingen 93) cultivated in the Republic of Moldova and BSG in a fermented form (BSF) in an addition level of 10% and 17.

Differential Inhibition by Cenobamate of Canonical Human Nav1.5 Ion Channels and Several Point Mutants.

Int J Mol Sci

January 2025

Department of Anatomy, Animal Physiology and Biophysics, Faculty of Biology, University of Bucharest, Splaiul Independentei 91-95, 050095 Bucharest, Romania.

Cenobamate is a new and highly effective antiseizure compound used for the treatment of adults with focal onset seizures and particularly for epilepsy resistant to other antiepileptic drugs. It acts on multiple targets, as it is a positive allosteric activator of γ-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA) receptors and an inhibitor of neuronal sodium channels, particularly of the late or persistent Na current. We recently evidenced the inhibitory effects of cenobamate on the peak and late current component of the human cardiac isoform hNav1.
