Tuberculosis (TB) may cause significant long-term cardiorespiratory complications, of which pulmonary vascular disease is most under-recognized. TB is rarely listed as a cause of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in most PH guidelines, yet PH may develop at various stages in the time course of TB, from active infection through to the post-TB period. Predisposing risk factors for the development of PH are likely multifactorial, involving active TB disease and post-TB lung disease (PTLD), host-related and environment-related factors.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined how long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM) affects the relationship between physical activity (PA) and type 2 diabetes risk among 71,689 participants, revealing an unclear interaction between the two.
  • - Results showed that higher levels of PA significantly lowered the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in areas with low PM levels, but the protective effect diminished and even reversed in high PM areas, with increased risks observed at higher PA intensities.
  • - The conclusion emphasized that while PA can reduce diabetes risk in low pollution settings, high PM exposure may undermine these benefits, highlighting the need for careful consideration of health risks for residents in polluted environments.

Introduction: This study investigates whether plasma biomarkers (Aβ42/40 and p-tau 181), APS, as well as apolipoprotein E (APOE) proteotype predict cognitive deficits in elderly adults from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Methods: Forty-four with possible AD (pAD) and 41 healthy control (HC) subjects were screened using CSID and AQ, underwent cognitive assessment with the African Neuropsychology Battery (ANB), and provided blood samples for plasma Aβ42, Aβ40, Aβ42/40, and APOE proteotype. Linear and logistic regression were used to evaluate the associations of plasma biomarkers with ANB tests and the ability of biomarkers to predict cognitive status.

Background: Pediatric primary healthcare providers are well-positioned to provide healthy lifestyle and weight management related counseling but many lack training in evidence-based messages and methods.

Objectives: We assessed the impact of a brief, easy-to-access training for pediatric healthcare providers, (the Strong4Life Provider Training), designed to introduce/review current evidence-based messages and methods and improve healthy weight-related assessment and counseling practices.

Methods: Following their well-child visit, a convenience sample of children 12-17 years and parents of children 6-11 years ( = 121) of randomly selected Strong4Life trained ( = 15) and untrained ( = 15) pediatricians were administered a survey designed to assess the frequency, content, and patient satisfaction with weight management-related counseling provided.

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) affects nearly 1 million Americans annually, and many benefit from continued anticoagulation after the initial 3- to 6-month treatment period (secondary prevention).

Objectives: To determine whether warfarin, apixaban, or rivaroxaban is associated with reduced recurrent VTE hospitalization in the secondary prevention of VTE.

Patients/methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of participants enrolled in the MarketScan Insurance Database between 2013 and 2017 in those with an incident VTE.

Background Blacks harbor more cardiovascular risk factors than whites, but experience less atrial fibrillation ( AF ). Conversely, whites may have a lower risk of heart failure ( CHF ). N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide ( NT -pro BNP) levels are higher in whites, predict incident AF , and have diuretic effects in the setting of increased ventricular diastolic pressures, potentially providing a unifying explanation for these racial differences.
