Background: Few Bladder Cancer (BC) studies have examined the role of area-level variables. The purpose of this study was to examine racial differences in BC survival to elucidate if insurance status and contextual covariates could explain Black disadvantage in survival.
Method: Using the Fine-Gray subdistribution hazard models (sHR), five-year survival time was calculated from the date of diagnosis until the last day of follow-up or the date of death due to BC in Florida 2000-2014 (n = 32,321).

In this article, we argue that using puppetry as a tool for arts-based research can enhance existing health and disability communication scholarship. We position interdisciplinary puppetry research alongside concepts and theories of interest to communication scholars, including entertainment education, embodiment and performance, communicated narrative sense-making, and dialogue. Then, we share an illustrative case study from our research with the nonprofit organization, MicheLee Puppets.

Changes in lipid composition at membrane fusion sites in mating Tetrahymena are thought to involve the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), but its localization to these sites has not been observed. Here we show ER distribution during Tetrahymena mating using TtRET1-GFP and GFP-KDEL. We find that both markers localize to perinuclear membranes and tubular structures that connect perinuclear membrane to plasma membrane at fusion sites.

Searching for missing or wanted people is a crucial task in our society. Previous work on prospective person memory (PPM) has demonstrated that performance on this type of search task is worse relative to standard prospective memory tasks. Importantly, this process may be further affected by the race of the missing person, yet this has never been tested in laboratory settings.

There has been steady progress in documenting the psychosocial risk factors of hypertension. However, most of the extant evidence is based on population from the developed countries. Using nationally representative data from India, this cross-sectional study explores whether spousal age gap is associated with risk of hypertension in married women aged 20 to 49 years.

A small percentage of patients consume most of the health services in the US. These cases of superutilization affect hospitals, but little is known about what it is, the impact on hospitals, or how hospitals can identify potential cases of superutilization. We conducted exploratory research using the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) datasets for 2019 to examine superutilization as it relates to hospitals.

Silver(I) cyanoximate compounds have antibacterial activity against the oral pathogen a resident of oral plaque biofilm. As oral biofilm strategies focus on the inhibition of attachment or physical removal of the existing microbes, we were interested in exploring the ability of six different silver(I) cyanoximate compounds to target and disperse a pre-existing biofilm. Here we report that these compounds were only able to partially disperse biofilms as the compounds were more effective at inhibiting biofilm formation.

Background And Objectives: Managers in health care today face an array of digital technologies that assist or augment certain human tasks. But these technologies are often fraught and present challenges to managers, whose competencies must evolve to keep pace with technological advancements.
Methods: Drawing on theory about technology, work, and organizations, we present a human-technology continuum to facilitate this discussion for managers.

Raising young children has always been hard, but evidence suggests that it may be getting harder. The isolation of the pandemic, the pressures to fulfill exacting parenting standards, and the explosion of "expert" parenting advice on social media have fueled the rise of "gentle parenting," an approach that pivots away from older, discipline-heavy parenting typologies and which promises the development of happier, healthier children. Despite the popularity of gentle parenting, it has received no empirical scrutiny.

Background: We examined the association between late-stage diagnosis and individual- and community-level sociodemographic and socioeconomic characteristics among patients with pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma and rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS).
Methods: We obtained Children's Oncology Group data from 1999 to 2021 including summary stage [local (L), regional (R), and distant (D)], tumor subtype, demographics, and ZIP Code at diagnosis. We linked ZIP Codes to county-level redlining scores (C, D = greatest redlining), the Child Opportunity Index, and measures of segregation (racial dissimilarity indices).

Inheriting a pathogenic variant in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene considerably increases a woman's risk levels for developing breast and ovarian cancer. In addition to serious physical health implications, women with a BRCA pathogenic variant may face psychosocial challenges, including those related to navigating the often demanding process of communicating about topics regarding BRCA with family and other social network members. Based on in-depth interviews with 24 women who tested BRCA-positive, we found that-consistent with the conceptualization of communication work articulated by Donovan-Kicken et al.

Introduction: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective method for prevention of HIV transmission. Female sex workers (FSW) in Malaysia are at substantially increased risk of acquiring HIV compared to the general female population, yet little is known about this population's current HIV prevention practices or acceptance of PrEP. This study aims to inform the culturally relevant implementation of PrEP through the qualitative exploration of (1) the potential need for PrEP in this population and (2) the factors that determine FSW willingness to use oral PrEP.

We demonstrate that SWE slightly ameliorated the negative physical growth effects of salt stress, especially in the root anatomy of the salt-sensitive (Clark) variety. The SWE did not stimulate or enhance peroxidase (POD) activity in either the salt-sensitive (Clark) or salt-tolerant variety (Manokin).

Introduction: The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) chat programs has opened two distinct paths, one enhancing interaction and another potentially replacing personal understanding. Ethical and legal concerns arise due to the rapid development of these programs. This paper investigates academic discussions on AI in medicine, analyzing the context, frequency, and reasons behind these conversations.

Thiamin and its phosphate derivatives are ubiquitous molecules involved as essential cofactors in many cellular processes. The biosynthesis of thiamin employs the parallel synthesis of 4-methyl-5-(2-hydroxyethyl)thiazole (THZ-P) and 4-amino-2-methyl-5(diphosphooxymethyl) pyrimidine (HMP) pyrophosphate (HMP-PP), which are coupled to generate thiamin phosphate. Most organisms that can biosynthesize thiamin employ a kinase (HMPK or ThiD) to generate HMP-PP.

Background/objective: Alzheimer's disease is a prominent neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline and memory loss. Variations in subjective cognitive decline among Alzheimer's patients, often reported by caregiver, may stem from cultural, socioeconomic, healthcare access, and genetic factors. This study investigates racial disparities in subjective cognitive decline reported by caregivers and their implications.

Background: For many conditions, a timely visit to the Emergency Department (ED) can have a tremendous impact on the patient's outcome. However, the decision to visit the ED in a time of need can be stressful. Our study aims to understand whether cost was a factor for seeking ED care, and if any particular subgroups including race, ethnicity and sex were less likely to obtain such care.

The authors present the case of a 39-year-old male who presented to the hospital with worsening eye pain, swelling, and blurred vision of the left eye. His symptoms grew worse despite initial over-the-counter medication and a trip to the urgent care center. A physical exam was concerning for a possible orbital cellulitis given the appearance of the eye and the amount of discomfort, as well as their immunocompromised status, necessitating imaging and workup to confirm the diagnosis.
