Benign mimics of prostatic adenocarcinoma.

Mod Pathol

January 2018

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Calgary Laboratory Services and University of Calgary, Rockyview General Hospital, Calgary, AB, Canada.

Benign mimics present either as common challenges in daily routine practice or may cause diagnostic dilemmas because some are less commonly seen and one may be less familiar in recognizing them. There are a multitude of mimics of prostatic adenocarcinoma, which may represent normal gland structures, benign proliferations, atrophic lesions, hyperplastic or metaplastic changes, and inflammatory processes. Some of them are preferentially found in certain anatomic areas of the prostate, either confined to the prostate, or outside of the gland.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the survival rates of patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) based on their p16 biomarker status, finding that HPV-related cases generally have better survival outcomes.
  • Patients with p16-positive tumors showed similar survival rates, whether they underwent surgical or nonsurgical treatments, whereas p16-negative patients had improved survival with surgical intervention.
  • The results suggest that while p16-positive patients can choose between treatments without impacting their outcomes, p16-negative patients might benefit more from surgery followed by additional therapy.

Nontuberculous Mycobacteria in Cystic Fibrosis.

Curr Treat Options Infect Dis

October 2016

Department of Medicine, Division of Respirology, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC Canada ; Centre for Heart Lung Innovation, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC Canada ; St. Paul's Hospital, 8B Providence Wing, 1081 Burrard Street, Vancouver, BC V6Z 1Y6 Canada.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are found in approximately 10 % of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, but only a portion will develop NTM disease. The management of CF lung disease should be optimized, including antibiotic therapy targeted to the individual's usual airway bacteria, prior to considering treatment for NTM lung disease. Those who meet criteria for NTM lung disease may not necessarily require treatment and could be monitored expectantly if symptoms and radiographic findings are minimal.
