Purpose: To systematically review randomized controlled trials to compare clinical outcomes of microfracture (MFx) versus third-generation autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) for the treatment of focal chondral defects (FCDs) of the knee joint.

Methods: A systematic review was performed by searching PubMed, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE to locate randomized controlled trials comparing minimum 2-year clinical outcomes of patients undergoing MFx versus third-generation ACI for FCDs of the knee joint. The search terms used were: "knee" AND "microfracture" AND "autologous chondrocyte" AND "randomized.

Aim: The purpose of this study is to investigate what factors make students feel confident and competent when performing a female genitourinary exam (FGUE) with normal, nonpathologic findings. We anticipated that students would increase their confidence and perceived competence from the first year to the second year of medical school, would prefer the use of specialized standardized patients (SSPs) over models, and that the results would vary by student demographics.

Methods: Student confidence and perceived competence were measured using voluntary survey methods pre- and postinterventions.

Background: Dysregulation of antiviral immunity has been implicated in the progression of acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection into severe cases of coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19). Imbalances in the inflammatory response drive the overabundant production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. The low molecular weight fraction of 5% human serum albumin commercial preparation (AMP5A) is a novel biologic drug currently under clinical investigation for the treatment of osteoarthritis and the hyperinflammatory response associated with COVID-19.

The teach-back method is a valuable communication tool that can be employed to improve patient safety and shared decision-making. Its utility in patient care has been studied extensively in many areas of clinical medicine. However, the literature on the use of teach-back in surgical patient education and informed consent is limited.

Ultrasound attenuation coefficient of the liver and spleen in adults: A preliminary observation.

Clin Imaging

April 2022

Rocky Vista University, Ivins, UT, USA; Weill Cornell Medicine, Cornell University, New York, NY, USA. Electronic address:

Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess ultrasound attenuation coefficient (AC) in adult liver and spleen.

Methods: After obtaining IRB approval and written informed consent, liver AC and spleen AC were measured, and AC liver to spleen ratio (AC L/S = AC /AC ) was calculated in 36 adult volunteers (16 men and 20 women, mean age 50y). Based on magnetic resonance imaging derived proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF), the participants were divided into normal liver (MRI-PDFF <5%) and steatotic liver (MRI-PDFF ≥5%) groups.

While the gut microbiome is composed of numerous bacteria, specific bacteria within the gut may play a significant role in carcinogenesis, progression, and metastasis of colorectal carcinoma (CRC). Certain microbial species are known to be associated with specific cancers; however, the interrelationship between bacteria and metastasis is still enigmatic. Mounting evidence suggests that bacteria participate in cancer organotropism during solid tumor metastasis.

Governed by established structure-property relationships, peptide motifs comprising major ampullate spider silk confer a balance of strength and extensibility. Other biologically inspired small peptide motifs correlated to specific functionalities can be combined within these units to create designer silk materials with new hybrid properties. In this study, a small basic peptide, (ARKKAAKA) known to both bind heparin and mimic an antimicrobial peptide, was genetically linked to a protease-resistant, mechanically robust silk-like peptide, MaSp2.

Introduction: Acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSI) are frequently encountered in the emergency department and compromise more than 700,000 hospital admissions annually. Dalbavancin is a single dose long acting semi-synthetic lipogylcopepitde antibiotic with coverage against gram-positive organisms including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Recent data from large tertiary care centers have shown a decrease in hospital admissions and repeat emergency department visits for ABSSI's but little data is available for those who practice in a rural community setting.

This study explores the rate of Imposter Syndrome (IS) in osteopathic medical students specifically in regard to gender. Additionally, we compare IS with previous performance on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and undergraduate science GPA. IS has been described as a psychological term that refers to a pattern of behavior wherein people doubt their abilities and have a persistent fear of being exposed as a fraud regardless of adequate external evidence of success.

Objective: Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are essential to clinical decision-making as their recommendations are supported by published literature. Systematic reviews are considered the highest quality of evidence used to underpin these guidelines. However, research to support these recommendations may lack compliance to quality reporting among systematic reviews (SRs).

The role of teamwork and non-technical skills for improving emergency surgical outcomes: an international perspective.

Patient Saf Surg

February 2022

Department of General and Emergency Surgery, AUSL Della Romagna, Ospedale Maurizio Bufalini, 47521, Cesena, Italy.

The assurance of patient safety in emergency general surgery remains challenging due to the patients' high-risk underlying conditions and the wide variability in emergency surgical care provided around the globe. The authors of this article convened as an expert panel on patient safety in surgery at the 8 International Conference of the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) in Edinburgh, Scotland, on September 7-10, 2021. This review article represents the proceedings from the expert panel discussions at the WSES congress and was designed to provide an international perspective on optimizing teamwork and non-technical skills in emergency general surgery.

Background: Very little is known about the etiology of personality and psychiatric disorders. Because the core neurobiology of many such traits is evolutionarily conserved, dogs present a powerful model. We previously reported genome scans of breed averages of ten traits related to fear, anxiety, aggression and social behavior in multiple cohorts of pedigree dogs.

Comparing patterns of performance and kinematics across behavior, development and phylogeny is crucial to understand the evolution of complex musculoskeletal systems such as the feeding apparatus. However, conveying 3D spatial data of muscle orientation throughout a feeding cycle, ontogenetic pathway or phylogenetic lineage is essential to understanding the function and evolution of the skull in vertebrates. Here, we detail the use of ternary plots for displaying and comparing the 3D orientation of muscle data.

Cobalamin C disease is the most common complementation class of cobalamin disorders. Here, we present a case of a 14-yr-old male with early-onset cblC disease and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) admitted to our inpatient medical service for behavioral decompensation. We use this case to highlight key aspects of the neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders associated with cblC disease.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), emerged in December 2019 and became a devastating pandemic. Although its respiratory effects can be deadly and debilitating, it can lead to other systemic disorders, such as those causing eye pain and headache. This literature review aims to describe presentations of eye pain and headache in relation to COVID-19, with an emphasis on how these disorders help us to understand the pathophysiology of COVID-19.

Viral infection commonly causes exacerbation of chronic conditions. However, this is not yet well reported in patients with a SARS-CoV2-infection and a history of a chronic neurologic disorder. At our institute, we had a patient presenting with more definitive upper respiratory symptoms and no history of vaccination, while the other patient was a breakthrough case with minimal pulmonary symptoms.
