Introduction: Mutations of are usually inherited and have been implicated in breast cancers, colorectal cancers, thyroid cancers, kidney cancers, and prostate cancers. The CHEK2 gene codes for checkpoint kinase 2 protein which is an effector in the ATM-CHEK2-p53 pathway and responds to DNA double-strand breaks.
Case Presentation: We describe a unique case of a 29-year-old Canadian female who presented with synchronous papillary thyroid carcinoma and rectal adenocarcinoma who was subsequently found to have a sporadic CHEK2 (checkpoint kinase 2) mutation.

Objective: Patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) and Parkinson's Disease (PD) can clinically appear quite similar at baseline evaluation. We sought to investigate the use of kinematic assessment of postural instability (PI) using inertial measurement units (IMUs) as a mechanism of differentiation between the two disease processes.
Methods: 20 patients with NPH, 55 patients with PD, and 56 age-matched, healthy controls underwent quantitative pull test examinations while wearing IMUs at baseline.

Background: The great obstetrical syndromes of fetal growth restriction and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy can occur individually or be interrelated. Placental pathologic findings often overlap between these conditions, regardless of whether 1 or both diagnoses are present. Quantification of placental villous structures in each of these settings may identify distinct differences in developmental pathways.

Background: Studies have shown lower rates of cancer screening and high mortality rates among all Asian Americans than among non-Hispanic White populations. However, most of these studies often confound diverse Asian American subgroups with limited data on cancer screening for Indian Americans, with this group being particularly interesting because of their counterintuitive socioeconomic status. For this reason, the objective of this study is to evaluate knowledge of the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) cancer screening guidelines and compliance among South Indian Americans residing in Southern California.

Purpose: To review published literature to identify and evaluate the effect of virtual reality (complete immersion) and augmented reality (overlay of digital information onto the physical world) simulators on intraoperative use for orthopaedic surgeons, orthopaedic surgical education, and athletic training.
Methods: A systematic review was performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines to identify studies, published since 2014, that evaluated the role of augmented/virtual reality on intraoperative use for orthopaedic surgeons, orthopaedic surgical education, and athletic training.
Results: Virtual reality (VR) simulators provide 3-dimensional graphical simulation of the physical world, and augmented reality (AR) simulators overlay digital information onto the physical world.

Gould syndrome is an autosomal dominant syndrome due to a COL4A1 or COL4A2 mutation that is commonly characterised by familial porencephaly, seizures, intracranial haemorrhages, cataracts, nephropathies and more. There have been up to 137 identified patients based on a review of the literature. In this case, we describe a male infant that presents with hemiparesis, developmental delay and gait abnormalities at his well-child check.

The amounts of parasite DNA in soil samples from different playgrounds and other public areas can help identify areas of possible microbe transmission and give indications of the possible occurrence of parasite infection in nearby communities. We collected 207 soil samples from parks in Paiute indigenous tribal areas in southwestern Utah and from the higher income city of St. George, Utah, and tested them for 11 parasites that can cause human disease.

We report a case involving a post-menopausal female who experienced a sudden loss of peripheral vision in her right eye seven months after a confirmed COVID-19 infection. MRI scans of the brain and orbit excluded neuritis and multiple sclerosis, leading to the diagnosis of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). It is known that the intense inflammatory condition resulting from acute respiratory distress syndrome triggered by SARS-CoV-2 infections can result in a heightened tendency for blood clot formation.

An incarcerated male patient with a psychiatric history of schizoaffective disorder presented to the emergency department with muscle rigidity and mutism after receiving a 150 mg haloperidol decanoate injection. At the peak of his illness, symptoms included muscular rigidity, mutism, excessive drooling, an altered level of consciousness, tachycardia, diaphoresis and tremors. Atypical neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) was diagnosed after discrediting similar illnesses through clinical reasoning, laboratory and imaging studies.

Premedication in anesthesia has long been used to reduce patient anxiety, increase patient compliance, and supplement the overall anesthetic. In pediatric populations, premedication also has the indirect benefits of reducing parental anxiety as well as both the incidence and severity of emergence delirium. Oral midazolam, selected for its ease of administration, short duration of action, and reliable anxiolytic and amnestic effects, has been a favorite choice in this role for decades.
