Aim: To describe the complex roles of and crucial support provided by caregivers to young adults with cerebral palsy (CP) during the transition to adulthood.
Method: This was a qualitative study. We conducted 20 semi-structured interviews (13 caregiver; 7 patient/caregiver dyad) and analyzed data using a qualitative descriptive approach informed by phenomenological principles.

Objectives: Reduced physical function following hospitalization places older adults at risk of adverse health events. Many older adults receive home health physical therapy to reverse their deconditioning; however, optimal approaches to improve physical function are currently not known. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a home health care approach comprised of high-intensity exercise, enhanced care transition, and protein supplementation.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) increases the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) by 60% in untreated patients, and hypercortisolism is common in MDD as well as in some patients with T2D. Patients with MDD, despite hypercortisolism, show inappropriately normal levels of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and plasma adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) in the cerebrospinal fluid, which might implicate impaired negative feedback. Also, a positive feedback loop of the CRH-norepinephrine (NE)-CRH system may be involved in the hypercortisolism of MDD and T2D.

Recent microbiome research has incorporated a higher number of samples through more participants in a study, longitudinal studies, and metanalysis between studies. Physical limitations in a sequencing machine can result in samples spread across sequencing runs. Here we present the results of sequencing nearly 1000 16S rRNA gene sequences in fecal (stabilized and swab) and oral (swab) samples from multiple human microbiome studies and positive controls that were conducted with identical standard operating procedures.

Objective: To assess injured military veterans' experiences, beliefs, and daily physical and psychosocial functioning in relation to food and nutrition.
Design: We used a convergent mixed-methods study design and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health to operationalize the core constructs and influencing factors related to physical and psychosocial functioning, food, and nutrition.
Setting: Three Veterans Affairs polytrauma rehabilitation centers.

Electronic address:
Alcohol use is associated with an increased incidence of negative health outcomes in burn patients due to biological mechanisms that include a dysregulated inflammatory response and increased intestinal permeability. This study used phosphatidylethanol (PEth) in blood, a direct biomarker of recent alcohol use, to investigate associations between a recent history of alcohol use and the fecal microbiota, short chain fatty acids, and inflammatory markers in the first week after a burn injury for nineteen participants. Burn patients were grouped according to PEth levels of low or high and differences in the overall fecal microbial community were observed between these cohorts.

On December 8th 2023, the annual Alcohol and Immunology Research Interest Group (AIRIG) meeting was held at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado. The 2023 meeting focused broadly on how acute and chronic alcohol exposure leads to immune dysregulation, and how this contributes to damage in multiple tissues and organs. These include impaired lung immunity, intestinal dysfunction, autoimmunity, the gut-Central Nervous System (CNS) axis, and end-organ damage.

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by a prolonged stress response to potentially life-threatening events long after the event has passed. Understanding factors related to recovery from traumatic life events may inform novel targets for intervention. There is emerging preclinical evidence that creatine (Cr), a molecule critical to brain bioenergetics, may be a neurobiological marker of stress reactivity and recovery.

Injury related to blast exposure dramatically rose during post-911 era military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is among the most common injuries following blast, an exposure that may not result in a definitive physiologic marker (e.g.

Aim: To increase understanding regarding the experiences and values of young adults with cerebral palsy (CP), and their caregivers, regarding pediatric rehabilitation-related care, including perceived barriers and potential facilitators to transition to adult care.
Method: This was a qualitative descriptive study that used 20 semi-structured interviews (13 caregivers and seven patient-caregiver dyads).
Results: We identified four major themes: (1) the value and security of long-term relationships; (2) feeling 'rudderless' navigating the logistics of transition; (3) differences in pediatric versus adult models of care; and (4) perceived lack of provider expertise and comfort in adult care settings.

Purpose Of Review: Inhalation of airborne pollutants in the natural and built environment is ubiquitous; yet, exposures are different across a lifespan and unique to individuals. Here, we reviewed the connections between mental health outcomes from airborne pollutant exposures, the biological inflammatory mechanisms, and provide future directions for researchers and policy makers. The current state of knowledge is discussed on associations between mental health outcomes and Clean Air Act criteria pollutants, traffic-related air pollutants, pesticides, heavy metals, jet fuel, and burn pits.

Objective: The purpose of this study will be to determine the efficacy of low intensity lower extremity resistance training with and without blood flow restriction (BFR) on quadriceps muscle strength and thickness in veterans with advanced multiple sclerosis (MS).
Methods: This will be an assessor-blinded, 2-group (1 to 1 allocation) randomized controlled trial targeting an enrollment of 58 participants with advanced MS as defined by Patient-Determined Disease Steps scale levels 4 to 7. Both groups will complete 10 weeks of twice weekly low-load resistance training (20%-30% of 1-repetition max) targeting knee and hip extension, knee flexion, and ankle plantarflexion.
