Introduction: Men are generally more susceptible to bacterial infections than women. Central venous catheters (CVCs), often used to administer systemic treatment in patients with cancer, are an important source of infection. However, little is known about sex-specific differences of CVC-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) in patients with cancer.

Aims: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) is a diagnosis of exclusion that can pose a challenge to the pathologist despite thorough clinical workup. Although several immunohistochemical markers have been proposed for iCCA, none of them reached clinical practice. We here assessed the combined usage of two promising diagnostic approaches, albumin in situ hybridisation (Alb-ISH) and C reactive protein (CRP) immunohistochemistry, for distinguishing iCCA from other adenocarcinoma primaries.

Objective: To explore workload-related stress levels experienced by consultation liaison psychiatry (CLP) staff in England and Ireland, and factors relevant to such a burden, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: Data were obtained for England and Ireland from a European survey among CLP services in general hospitals spread via CLP networks (11th June - 3rd October 2021). The heads of respective CLP services in general hospitals responded on behalf of each service, on 100 CLP hospital staff in total.

Background: Tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 7 (IGFBP7) are markers of tubular stress and urinary [TIMP-2]*[IGFBP7] is an established biomarker for risk assessment of acute kidney injury. There are no studies of expression profiles or localization of these markers in human renal tissue with confirmed renal disease.
Methods: We analysed 37 kidney biopsies of patients with renal disease and 10 non-diseased control biopsies for TIMP-2 and IGFBP7 expression using immunohistochemistry.

Background: Aortic valve (AV) repair is an evolving surgical strategy in the treatment of nonelderly adults with aortic regurgitation. We aimed to determine the 1-year outcome after AV repair vs surgical AV replacement (sAVR) using real-world data from the German Aortic Valve Registry.
Methods: A total of 8076 aortic regurgitation patients (mean age, 59.

Thioredoxin-1 (Trx-1) is a multifunctional protein ubiquitously found in the human body. Trx-1 plays an important role in various cellular functions such as maintenance of redox homeostasis, proliferation, and DNA synthesis, but also modulation of transcription factors and control of cell death. Thus, Trx-1 is one of the most important proteins for proper cell and organ function.

Background: An effective therapy of persistent atrial fibrillation beyond pulmonary vein isolation remains unsatisfactory. Targeting endocardial low-voltage areas represents an approach of substrate modification. This prospective, randomized study investigated the efficacy of ablation of low-voltage areas versus PVI and additional linear ablations in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation in terms of single-procedure arrhythmia-free outcome and safety.

We retrospectively studied 97 acute myeloid leukemia patients with trisomy 19 (median age at diagnosis 57 years; range, 17- 83 years) treated between 2001 and 2019 within two multicenter study groups. Trisomy 19 occurred alone in ten (10.5%) patients, with additional abnormalities being present in non-complex karyotypes in eight (8%) patients and in complex karyotypes in 79 (82%) patients.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia and is assumed to affect more than 30 million people worldwide. Studies report that the left atrial appendage (LAA) plays an important role in thrombus formation and is considered the embolic source in 90% of affected patients with non-valvular and 57% with valvular AF. Oral anticoagulants have been the standard of care for stroke prevention in patients with AF for decades.

A common genetic variant within the T cell receptor alpha (TCRA)-T cell receptor delta (TCRD) locus (rs2204985) has been recently found to associate with thymic function. Aim of this study was to investigate the potential impact of donor rs2204985 genotype on patient's outcome after unrelated hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (uHSCT). 2016 adult patients were retrospectively analyzed.

We retrospectively studied 125 patients with acute myeloid leukemia and trisomy 4 (median age at diagnosis, 58 years; range, 16-77 years) treated between 2000 and 2019 within a multicenter study. Trisomy 4 was the sole abnormality in 28 (22%) patients and additional abnormalities were present in 97 (78%) patients. Twenty-two (22%) and 15 (15%) of 101 tested patients harbored NPM1 and FLT3-ITD mutations.

Background: The single procedure success rates of durable pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) vary between 80% and 90%. This prospective, randomized study investigated the efficacy of cryoballoon PVI (CBA) versus PVI with radio-frequency (RF)-energy following the CLOSE protocol (ablation index [AI], interlesion distance ≤6 mm, surround flow catheter) in terms of single-procedure arrhythmia-free outcome and safety.
Methods And Results: A total number of 150 patients undergoing de novo catheter ablation for paroxysmal AF were randomized to two different treatment arms.

Background: Heat waves are known to cause increased morbidity and mortality in susceptible populations like old and functionally impaired people. The objective of the study was to assess renal tubular stress, a predictor for development of acute kidney injury, during heat waves in Central Europe. As a marker of renal tubular stress tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-2 [TIMP-2]·insulin-like growth factor binding protein-7 [IGFBP7], a new FDA-cleared renal tubular stress biomarker, was used.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with high morbidity and mortality; therefore, prevention is important. The aim of this study was to systematically assess AKI incidence after cardiac surgery as documented in clinical routine compared to the real incidence because AKI may be under-recognized in clinical practice. Further, its postoperative management was compared to Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) recommendations because recognition and adequate treatment represent the fundamental cornerstone in the prevention and management of AKI.

Background: Overall survival remains poor in older patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with less than 10% being alive after 5 years. In recent studies, a significant improvement in event-free, relapse-free and overall survival was shown by adding gemtuzumab ozogamicin (GO), a humanized antibody-drug conjugate directed against CD33, to intensive induction therapy once or in a sequential dosing schedule. Glasdegib, the small-molecule inhibitor of smoothened (SMO), also showed improved overall survival in patients not eligible for intensive chemotherapy when combined with low-dose cytarabine compared to low-dose cytarabine alone.

Background: The single procedure success rates of durable pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) varies between 80 and 90%. Ablation index, incorporating contact force, stability, time and power is a more profound parameter of significant lesion size and has been established. Equally important is a stringent contiguity of the lesion set.

T-cell epitope matching according to the TCE3 algorithm classifies HLA-DPB1 mismatches in permissive and non-permissive. This classification has been shown to be predictive for mortality and acute GvHD (aGvHD) events in large international cohorts. We retrospectively genotyped HLA-DPB1 in 3523 patients transplanted in Germany between 2000 and 2014 and in their unrelated donors using an Illumina amplicon-NGS based assay.
