We report de novo genome assemblies, transcriptomes, annotations, and methylomes for the 26 inbreds that serve as the founders for the maize nested association mapping population. The number of pan-genes in these diverse genomes exceeds 103,000, with approximately a third found across all genotypes. The results demonstrate that the ancient tetraploid character of maize continues to degrade by fractionation to the present day.

The entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium humberi affects Aedes aegypti adults, larvae and eggs, but its ovicidal activity is not yet well documented. Conidia of this fungus adhered to the chorion, initiated germination within 12 h, and germinating conidia were detected for up to 10 d after contact with the egg. Germ tubes either penetrated the chorion directly or formed appressoria at the end of a short hypha (<5 μm) or, subsequently, on longer, branched hyphae.

Granular microsclerotial formulations of entomopathogenic fungi deserve attention because of their post-application, in situ production of new conidia that enhance and prolong mycoinsecticidal efficacy against a target pest insect. Because high ambient moisture is a crucial condition to induce fungal development and conidiogenesis on granules, we tested the impacts of the additions of three humectants-glycerin, propylene glycol, and polyethylene glycol 400-on water absorption by pellets incorporating microsclerotia of Metarhizium humberi IP 46 with microcrystalline cellulose or vermiculite carriers, and on the production of infective conidia of IP 46 microsclerotia in ambient humidities suboptimal for routine conidiogenesis. Glycerin facilitated greater and faster absorption of water than the other humectants.

Genetic manipulation of plant genes in prokaryotes has been widely used in molecular biology, but the function of a DNA sequence is far from being fully known. Here, we discovered that a plant protein-coding gene containing the CRAL_TRIO domain serves as a promoter in bacteria. We firstly characterized CitPITP1 from Citrus, which contains the CRAL_TRIO domain, and identified a 64-bp sequence (key64) that is critical for prokaryotic promoter activity.

Iron and zinc malnutrition are global public health concerns afflicting mostly infants, children, and women in low- and middle-income countries with widespread consumption of plant-based diets. Common bean is a widely consumed staple crop around the world and is an excellent source of protein, fiber, and minerals including iron and zinc. Heterosis, the superiority of hybrids over their parents, is a major genetic force associated with plant fitness and crop yield enhancement. We investigated root-mediated yield heterosis in melons (Cucumis melo) by characterizing a common variety grafted onto 190 hybrid rootstocks, resulting from crossing 20 diverse inbreds in a diallel-mating scheme. Hybrid rootstocks improved yield by more than 40% compared with their parents, and the best hybrid yield outperformed the reference commercial variety by 65% under both optimal and minimal irrigation treatments.

Carotenoids, such as β-carotene, accumulate in chromoplasts of various fleshy fruits, awarding them with colors, aromas, and nutrients. The Orange (CmOr) gene controls β-carotene accumulation in melon fruit by posttranslationally enhancing carotenogenesis and repressing β-carotene turnover in chromoplasts.
