Introduction: Assessing the survivability of, and potential injury to, a ship's crew from underwater blast is crucial to understanding the operating capability of a military vessel following blast exposure. One form of injury that can occur and affect a crew member's ability to perform tasks is traumatic brain injury (TBI). To evaluate the risk of TBI from underwater blasts, injury metrics based on linear head acceleration have traditionally been used.

Odontoid fractures remain the most common C2 fracture and of those individuals older than 65 years. The type of optimal management remains in question given comorbidities, risk of nonunion, and limitations in mobility when surgical fusion is the treatment selected. These fractures are of particular importance, given the high incident of morbidity and mortality following an odontoid fracture.

We present a drift-diffusion model for predicting currents generated through the absorption of solar energy inside bulk heterojunction organic nanoparticles, which are, for example, promising nanomaterials for photo-catalytic water splitting. By coupling a model of the internal microstructure of the nanoparticle with the electronic properties, we show how different characteristics of the microstructure influence the efficiency of the conversion of solar energy into electrical energy. Our model provides a foundation for using computational modeling to optimize the design of photocatalytic nanoparticles.

The COVID-19 pandemic directly threatened our health and safety, while contradictory scientific and media reports generated uncertainty. Social information processing theory suggests that employees may have relied on their coworkers, via coworker support, to make sense of the confusion. Because previous research shows that coworker support can counterintuitively increase strain, we investigated the effects of coworker support on strain during the pandemic.

May 2023

Jiuann-Huey Ivy Lin is an attending physician in the cardiac intensive care unit and an assistant professor, Department of Critical Care Medicine, UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Background: Children with congenital heart disease have unique risk factors associated with the pathophysiology of an abnormal heart; hence, this population is most likely at increased risk of acquiring a pressure injury during hospitalization. Few studies have included patients with congenital heart disease or examined the factors unique to these patients.

Objective: To identify risk factors associated with pressure injury development in children with congenital heart disease.

Lunate and perilunate dislocations, although somewhat uncommon, are serious injuries and can be easily missed. The mechanism of injury is hyperextension of the wrist, often associated with a fall on the outstretched hand (FOOSH) injury, falls from height, or motor vehicle crash with a high-energy traumatic injury to the wrist. Perilunate dislocations typically present with pain and swelling over both the dorsal and volar aspects of the wrist and limited range of motion of the wrist.

Fused filament fabrication three-dimensional (FFF 3-D) printing is thought to be environmentally sustainable; however, significant amounts of waste can be generated from this technology. One way to improve its sustainability is via distributed recycling of plastics in homes, schools, and libraries to create feedstock filament for printing. Risks from exposures incurred during recycling and reuse of plastics has not been incorporated into life cycle assessments.

Material extrusion-type fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3-D printing is a valuable tool for education. During FFF 3-D printing, thermal degradation of the polymer releases small particles and chemicals, many of which are hazardous to human health. In this study, particle and chemical emissions from 10 different filaments made from virgin (never printed) and recycled polymers were used to print the same object at the polymer manufacturer's recommended nozzle temperature ("normal") and at a temperature higher than recommended ("hot") to simulate the real-world scenarios of a person intentionally or unknowingly printing on a machine with a changed setting.
