This patient is a 67-year-old man who initially presented to our facility with acute respiratory failure secondary to COVID-19. Soon after arrival at our facility, the patient decompensated, developing severe acute respiratory distress syndrome requiring intubation and prone positioning to maintain adequate oxygenation. During the next few days, acute kidney injury with oliguria and severe volume overload developed.

Background: Sleep quality is a risk factor for age-related diseases, and although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear, the effects of poor sleep quality on telomere length (TL) may play a role.

Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the independent association between sleep quality and salivary TL in a large sample of older adults.

Design: We adopted a retrospective cohort design, and participants comprised 5,268 adults drawn from the Health and Retirement Study.

Retinoblastoma in Infancy with Subsequent Bladder Leiomyosarcoma in Adulthood: Genomic Considerations.

Hereditary retinoblastoma is attributed to germline mutation in an RB1 tumor suppressor gene followed by somatic mutation in the other allele. This report details a case of leiomyosarcoma of the bladder in a 24-year-old man with a history of retinoblastoma treated by enucleation and radiotherapy in infancy. Leiomyosarcoma is the most common secondary soft tissue malignancy in retinoblastoma survivors; however, leiomyosarcoma of the bladder in retinoblastoma survivors is very rare.

Proactive safety awareness and violence prevention training for professional students.

Purpose/objectives: In response to the growing number of violent acts on college/university campuses in the US, a pilot safety awareness and violence prevention (SAVP) training was developed and collaboratively implemented for first-year dental and pharmacy students at a US academic health center. The study assessed student knowledge of violent behavior, warning signs emphasizing active shooter situations, response strategies when witnessing or experiencing violence, and awareness of available violence prevention resources.

Methods: In 2014, a presurvey/postsurvey design was approved by the Institutional Review Board and used to assess knowledge before and after SAVP training by the university police department.

Commentary on 'Surface markers associated with chondrogenic potential of human mesenchymal stromal/stem cells'.

In the last decade, researchers have searched for predictive surface markers of multipotent mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) for ensuring improved therapeutic outcomes following cartilage damage in humans. However, we have achieved only limited progress because of the challenge presented by conflicting data. This commentary provides some evidence to prove a lack of success with current efforts, including an inconsistency in accepted surface markers and chondrogenic potential of MSCs as well as the tissue source-dependent MSC surface markers that correlate with chondrogenic potential.

Designing a multifaceted telehealth intervention for a rural population using a model for developing complex interventions in nursing.

Background: Telehealth interventions offer an evidenced-based approach to providing cost-effective care, education, and timely communication at a distance. Yet, despite its widespread use, telehealth has not reached full potential, especially in rural areas, due to the complex process of designing and implementing telehealth programs. The objective of this paper is to explore the use of a theory-based approach, the Model for Developing Complex Interventions in Nursing, to design a pilot telehealth intervention program for a rural population with multiple chronic conditions.

Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitors and Joint Pain: A Retrospective Cohort Study of Older Veterans with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Background: In recent years, dipeptidyl peptidase (DPP)-4 inhibitors have been added to the diabetes treatment algorithm. Few published studies have shown that the use of DPP-4 inhibitors is associated with joint pain. To our knowledge, no population-based studies in the United States have studied this association.

Creating a Human Gross Anatomy Laboratory: The Experience at a Primarily Undergraduate Institution.

This paper details the creation of a human gross anatomy laboratory from a defunct chemistry laboratory at West Liberty University, a small primarily undergraduate institution in West Virginia. The article highlights important considerations with regard to the development of a human gross anatomy laboratory including access to human gifts; assessment of the space for size, security, and privacy; assessment of the utilities; acquisition of a dissection table; ventilation; aesthetics in functional design; expenses; and sustainability. The report also identifies favorable conditions and potential pitfalls regarding the creation of a human gross anatomy laboratory.

Pyrvinium Pamoate Use in a B cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Model of the Bone Tumor Microenvironment.

Purpose: Pyrvinium pamoate (PP) is an anthelmintic drug that has been found to have anti-cancer activity in several cancer types. In the present study, we evaluated PP for potential anti-leukemic activity in B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cell lines, in an effort to evaluate the repurposing potential of this drug in leukemia.

Methods: ALL cells were treated with PP at various concentrations to determine its effect on cell proliferation.

Background: Burnout and depression among physician trainees is increasing at an alarming rate. Promoting well-being is of utmost importance for graduate medical education. The primary objective was to determine if spiritual care staff/chaplaincy can assist in building emotional well-being and resiliency within medical residency education.

Role of lineage-specific matrix in stem cell chondrogenesis.

Cartilage repair in clinics is a challenge owing to the limited regenerative capacities of cartilage. Synovium-derived stem cells (SDSCs) are suggested as tissue-specific stem cells for chondrogenesis. In this study, we hypothesize that decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) deposited by SDSCs could provide a superior tissue-specific matrix microenvironment for optimal rejuvenation of adult SDSCs for cartilage regeneration.

Background: Provide robust and practically relevant information regarding the association between yoga, health-related quality-of-life (HRQOL), and mental well-being (MWB) in older adults.

Methods: Data were derived from a recent meta-analysis of 12 randomized controlled yoga trials representing 752 adults ≥60 years of age. Standardized mean difference effect sizes (ESs) were pooled using the recently developed quality effects model and 95% compatibility intervals (CI).

We used a retrospective cross-sectional design.
