Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the effects of high ratio fresh frozen plasma (FFP) to red blood cell (RBC) transfusions in children experiencing shock due to trauma, aiming to clarify their outcomes compared to low ratio transfusions.
  • An analysis of data from 135 injured children showed that while more severe injuries were present in the high ratio group, there was no significant difference in mortality rates or extended hospital stays between those receiving high and low ratios of FFP/RBC.
  • The findings indicate that high ratio FFP/RBC transfusion does not lead to worse outcomes, highlighting variability in massive transfusion protocols across different medical institutions.

A large number of human intracranial EEG (iEEG) recordings have been collected for clinical purposes, in institutions all over the world, but the vast majority of these are unaccompanied by EOG and EMG recordings which are required to separate Wake episodes from REM sleep using accepted methods. In order to make full use of this extremely valuable data, an accurate method of classifying sleep from iEEG recordings alone is required. Existing methods of sleep scoring using only iEEG recordings accurately classify all stages of sleep, with the exception that wake (W) and rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep are not well distinguished.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to improve trauma team activation (TTA) compliance, noting previous undertriage issues in a level I trauma center, by implementing a new alert system for dispatchers.
  • Results showed that the new system increased compliance with TTA criteria from 70.3% to 79.3% and significantly reduced undertriage from 6.0% to 3.2%.
  • However, this improvement came with a rise in overtriage from 46.6% to 57.4% and a decrease in the overall appropriate triage rate, indicating a need for better alignment of TTA criteria to balance both undertriage and overtriage effectively.

Despite a strong body of evidence supporting benefits of exercise to reduce severity of motor symptoms of Parkinson's Disease (PD) over time, research on the immediate impact of exercise as an adjunctive therapy for nonpharmacologic management of motor symptoms and mobility performance in people with PD is limited. The purpose of this study was to examine immediate effects of a single bout of high-cadence cycling on motor symptoms of PD and performance-based outcomes. Twenty individuals with idiopathic PD participated in a pretest/posttest study investigating immediate impacts of a single high-cadence cycling session on performance-based outcomes across multiple domains of motor function, mobility, and balance.

Factor XII (FXII) deficiency is a rare coagulopathy that typically goes undiagnosed due to the lack of abnormal bleeding or thrombosis. However, the accompanying prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) can create difficulties with maintaining therapeutic anticoagulation in the setting of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Here, we present the case of a 52-year-old man presenting with chest pain and diagnosed with an NSTEMI but also found with a prolonged baseline aPTT ultimately secondary to FXII deficiency.

Papuloerythroderma of Ofuji (PEO) is a rare skin disorder characterized by a distinctive pattern of pruritic, flat-topped, erythematous papules which coalesce into an erythroderma-like eruption with classic sparing of the skin folds. Although the pathogenesis of this condition is incompletely understood, previous reports have suggested a notable link between PEO and various forms of malignancy and immunocompromised states. Here, we report a case of a healthy young male with no comorbidities who presented with the classical features of PEO that responded well to combination therapy comprised of topical corticosteroids and phototherapy.
