Objective assessment of eyelid position and tear meniscus in facial nerve palsy.

Purpose: To evaluate lower lid position and tear meniscus in peripheral idiopathic facial nerve palsy (FNP).

Methods: A prospective study enrolled patients with peripheral idiopathic FNP and epiphora. Data were collected on patient demographics, House-Brackmann (HB) scale, digital photographs of the face, and tear meniscus at the 1st, 30, and 90 day after onset of FNP.

Clinical impact of multidrug-resistant bacteria in older hospitalized patients with community-acquired urinary tract infection.

Introduction: Previous studies have described some risk factors for multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria in urinary tract infection (UTI). However, the clinical impact of MDR bacteria on older hospitalized patients with community-acquired UTI has not been broadly analyzed. We conducted a study in older adults with community-acquired UTI in order to identify risk factors for MDR bacteria and to know their clinical impact.

Predictive Modeling of Poor Outcome in Severe COVID-19: A Single-Center Observational Study Based on Clinical, Cytokine and Laboratory Profiles.

Unlabelled: Pneumonia is the main cause of hospital admission in COVID-19 patients. We aimed to perform an extensive characterization of clinical, laboratory, and cytokine profiles in order to identify poor outcomes in COVID-19 patients.

Methods: A prospective and consecutive study involving 108 COVID-19 patients was conducted between March and April 2020 at Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valladolid (Spain).

National Early Warning Score 2 Lactate (NEWS2-L) in Predicting Early Clinical Deterioration in Patients with Dyspnoea in Prehospital Care.

Objectives: To evaluate the ability of the NEWS2-L (National Early Warning Score 2 Lactate) scale to predict the risk of early clinical deterioration (mortality within 48 hours) in patients with dyspnoea treated by the Medical Emergency Services compared with NEWS2 and lactate in isolation.

Methods: Prospective, multi-centre study of a cohort of 638 patients with dyspnoea treated in the ambulance and priority-transferred to a hospital emergency service in the cities of Valladolid, Salamanca, Segovia or Burgos (Spain). We collected clinical, analytical and demographic data.

Pediatric Sleep Apnea: The Overnight Electroencephalogram as a Phenotypic Biomarker.

Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent disorder that disrupts sleep and is associated with neurocognitive and behavioral negative consequences, potentially hampering the development of children for years. However, its relationships with sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) have been scarcely investigated. Here, our main objective was to characterize the overnight EEG of OSA-affected children and its putative relationships with polysomnographic measures and cognitive functions.

Occupational hypersensitivity pneumonitis caused by fossil-containing rocks.

Aims: We present a hypersensitivity immune response to inhalation of antigens from fossil soils frequently used in tile manufacture. We found that the soil polished by a worker affected by pneumonitis was a paleosol containing bivalves from the cretaceous period called Hippurites.

Long-term visual pathway alterations after elemental mercury poisoning: report of a series of 29 cases.

Background: There are few clinical data on retinal involvement after acute exposure to high concentrations mercury and the available reports are based on a small number of patients suffering chronic exposure. The purpose of this paper is to report findings in workers acutely exposed to very high concentrations of mercury vapor with the aim of providing data on a possible direct retinal involvement.

Background: Since December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the concept of medicine. This work aims to analyze the use of antibiotics in patients admitted to the hospital due to SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Methods: This work analyzes the use and effectiveness of antibiotics in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 based on data from the SEMI-COVID-19 registry, an initiative to generate knowledge about this disease using data from electronic medical records.

Ensemble-learning regression to estimate sleep apnea severity using at-home oximetry in adults.

Overnight pulse oximetry has shown usefulness to simplify obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) diagnosis when combined with machine-learning approaches. However, the development and evaluation of a single model with ability to reach high diagnostic performance in both community-based non-referral and clinical referral cohorts are still pending. Since ensemble-learning algorithms are known for their generalization ability, we propose a least-squares boosting (LSBoost) model aimed at estimating the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), as the correlate clinical measure of disease severity.

External validation of the HCM Risk-Kids model for predicting sudden cardiac death in childhood hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Aims: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is the most common mode of death in childhood hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). The newly developed HCM Risk-Kids model provides clinicians with individualized estimates of risk. The aim of this study was to externally validate the model in a large independent, multi-centre patient cohort.

Vascular calcification progression in patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease.

Background: Intima media thickness (IMT), vascular calcifications and ankle-brachial pressure index (ABPI) were shown to be independent predictors of mortality in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients.

Methods: Between January 2018 and March 2019, a physician-initiated, nonrandomized, prospective study was conducted. Carotid IMT, vascular calcifications analysis values and measurements of the ABPI, were made at baseline and after 1-year of follow-up.

Heart rate variability as a potential biomarker of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea resolution.

Study Objectives: Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects cardiac autonomic regulation, altering heart rate variability (HRV). Although changes in classical HRV parameters occur after OSA treatment, they have not been evaluated as reporters of OSA resolution. Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a breathing disorder that alters heart rate variability (HRV) dynamics during sleep. HRV in children is commonly assessed through conventional spectral analysis. However, bispectral analysis provides both linearity and stationarity information and has not been applied to the assessment of HRV in pediatric OSA.

Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative Breastfeeding Outcomes in Mothers with COVID-19 Infection During the First Weeks of the Pandemic in Spain.

Background: Adherence to the Ten Steps of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative has been shown to have a protective role for the initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding.

Research Aims: (1) To determine the breastfeeding rate during the first 6 months of life in children of mothers diagnosed with COVID-19 infection at the time of birth; and (2) to assess the possible influence of being born in a center with Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative accreditation.

Methods: This was a two-group comparative longitudinal observational study of infants born to mothers with COVID-19 at the time of birth, between March 13-May 31, 2020 (the first wave of the pandemic) in Spain.

Primary periocular squamous cell carcinoma in central Spain: Factors related to recurrence.

Purpose: To describe the characteristics and recurrence rates of primary periocular squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in Spain.

Methods: This retrospective study investigates the characteristics of primary periocular SCC at two tertiary centers in Spain from 2000 to 2020. Data were collected on demographics, skin phenotype, location, clinical and histological diagnosis, the commitment of surgical margins, recurrence, and risk factors.

Prognostic accuracy of Quick SOFA in older adults hospitalised with community acquired urinary tract infection.

Introduction: Quick [Sepsis-related] Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) is a prognostic score based on sepsis-3 definition, easy to carry out, whose application has been studied in older adults with sepsis from different sources and respiratory sepsis. However, to date no study has analysed its prognostic accuracy in older adults admitted to hospital with community urinary tract infection.

Methods: In a prospective study of 282 older adults admitted to hospital with community acquired urinary tract infection, the application of qSOFA to predict hospital mortality was analysed.

To determine the of undiagnosed lower extremity artery disease using the pulse oximetry in a type 2 diabetic population sample. Observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study that included 594 type 2 diabetic patients, with no previous history of lower extremity artery disease. Medical history, physical examination, determination of the ankle-brachial index (portable Doppler) and measurement of oxygen saturation in upper and lower extremities (pulse oximeter) were performed.

Hereditary Fructose Intolerance (HFI) is an autosomal recessive inborn error of metabolism characterised by the deficiency of the hepatic enzyme aldolase B. Its treatment consists in adopting a fructose-, sucrose-, and sorbitol (FSS)-restrictive diet for life. Untreated HFI patients present an abnormal transferrin (Tf) glycosylation pattern due to the inhibition of mannose-6-phosphate isomerase by fructose-1-phosphate.

The use of artificial intelligence in health care has grown quickly. In this sense, we present our work related to the application of Natural Language Processing techniques, as a tool to analyze the sentiment perception of users who answered two questions from the CSQ-8 questionnaires with raw Spanish free-text. Their responses are related to mindfulness, which is a novel technique used to control stress and anxiety caused by different factors in daily life.

One Triangle-Blepharoplasty Flap for Anterior Lamellae Pretarsal Defects on the Upper Eyelid.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to present the outcomes of one triangle blepharoplasty flap upper eyelid (UE) reconstruction. It is a hardly recognized technique used to repair anterior lamella pretarsal defects resulting from the removal of lesions on the UE.

Methods: Retrospective review of three excised lesions reconstructed with one triangle-blepharoplasty flap technique between 2017 and 2020 at Río Hortega University Hospital in Valladolid, Spain.

Analysis of Mental Health Disease Trends Using BeGraph Software in Spanish Health Care Centers: Case Study.

Background: In the era of big data, networks are becoming a popular factor in the field of data analysis. Networks are part of the main structure of BeGraph software, which is a 3D visualization application dedicated to the analysis of complex networks.

Objective: The main objective of this research was to visually analyze tendencies of mental health diseases in a region of Spain, using the BeGraph software, in order to make the most appropriate health-related decisions in each case.

Orbital neuromuscular choristoma of the ophthalmic nerve.

Introduction: Neuromuscular choristoma (NC) is a rare tumor composed of striated muscle fibers admixed with nerve fibers that often affects large peripheral nerve trunks in children. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case in the literature of a NC of the ophthalmic nerve in an adult.

Case Description: A 27-year-old woman presented with a 20-day history of left periorbital headache radiating to the frontotemporal region, with associated tearing, nausea, and vomiting.

Short Communication: Impact of COVID-19 on Case Reporting for HTLV and HIV-2 in Spain.

The medical demand imposed by COVID-19 has distracted proper care of other illnesses. Herein, we report the impact on new diagnoses of HTLV-1, HTLV-2, and HIV-2 in Spain, where these infections are mostly driven by immigration flows from endemic regions. As expected, case reporting declined for all three retroviral infections with respect to prior years.
