Introduction: Depression and anxiety are common in persons with cystic fibrosis (PwCF). Genetic polymorphisms in CYP2C19 and CYP2D6 are well-established predictors of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) treatment failure yet have not been studied specifically in PwCF. The purpose of this study was to determine the rate of SSRI failure in PwCF and to identify factors that predict treatment failure.

Children and adolescents and young adults (CAYAs) with sickle cell disease (SCD) suffer from recurrent acute pain episodes that result in hospitalization and confer substantial morbidity. Pharmacologic pain control is often inadequate, thus non-pharmacologic modalities are needed. Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is a potentially valuable non-pharmacologic addition to pain management.

Background: Individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience significant healthcare disparities; however, there is little known on the impact of psychosocial stressors and neighborhood disadvantage on preventive and acute care utilization in this population.
Procedure: A retrospective data collection was performed for all patients cared for at a comprehensive pediatric sickle cell center in the Midwest who had also completed the Psychosocial Assessment Tool (PAT), a validated caregiver-reported measurement of family psychosocial risk, from September 2021 through December 2022. Patient age, payor, primary language, frequency of acute and missed preventive care visits, as well as Area Deprivation Index (ADI) and Childhood Opportunity Index (COI) scores were collected for 256 patients.

Purpose: We aimed to assess long-term use of continent catheterizable urinary channels (CCCs) and explore potential risk factors of disuse.
Materials And Methods: People undergoing appendicovesicostomy and Monti procedures at our institution were retrospectively reviewed (1991-2023). The main outcome was CCC disuse (not intermittently catheterizing channels as the primary method of bladder emptying).

To optimize the clinical approach to non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE), it is essential to gain insight into its long-term effects on cognition and behaviors. Here, we investigated limbic NCSE-induced hippocampal injury and behavioral deficits in peri-adolescent rats. NCSE was induced in P43 Sprague Dawleyrats with intrahippocampal subconvulsive doses of kainic acid (NCSE group, n = 14) under continuous epidural cortical electroencephalography (EEG).

Packed red blood cells (PRBC) are frequently ordered for cardiac catheterization procedures, which increases resource utilization and patient charges. We applied the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) principle in order to optimize the ordering of PRBC for pediatric cardiac procedures and reducing charges. Our primary aim was to increase adherence to ordering guidelines to greater than 97%, with a global aim to reduce resource utilization.

Introduction: Complete disclosure of childhood genital surgery to patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a critical part of CAH care. There are no guidelines or uniform recommendations on the timing and content of surgical disclosure discussions.
Objective: Our objective was to describe the experiences and preferences of females with CAH and parents of females with CAH who underwent childhood genital surgery regarding surgical disclosure.

Objectives: HLA DQA1*05 has been associated with the development of anti-drug antibodies (ADA) to tumor necrosis factor antagonists (anti-TNF) and treatment failure among adults with Crohn's disease (CD). However, findings from other studies have been inconsistent with limited pediatric data.
Methods: We analyzed banked serum from patients with CD < 21 years of age enrolled in COMBINE, a multi-center, prospective randomized trial of anti-TNF monotherapy vs.

Introduction: Pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) management presents unique challenges in acute care settings, requiring specialized expertise to manage critically ill children. Medical and surgical fellows often manage these patients, but prior residency training rarely provides sufficient ECMO exposure. We developed and evaluated a multimodal pediatric ECMO boot camp for new fellows.

A retrospective review of gender-affirming hormone therapy was conducted in 101 transgender boys followed in the pediatric endocrine clinic. Eighty-seven percent were postmenarchal at the initial visit. Of the 44% prescribed gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs (GnRHas), insurance coverage was denied in 34% and an average of 4.

Respiratory diseases often result from complex interactions between an individual's genetic predisposition and their exposure to various environmental and other risk factors. Here we will briefly review how various types of "omics", particularly epigenomics and transcriptomics, hold promise for translation into clinical biomarkers in pediatric pulmonary medicine, using asthma and cystic fibrosis as examples.

The changing field of academic medicine presents unique challenges for physician-scientists, who intricately weave the complexities of research and patient care. These challenges have significantly lengthened the time needed for scientific discoveries to be applied in clinical practice. In response to these escalating demands, the training trajectory for physician-scientists has notably expanded over recent decades.

Pediatric critical asthma, or formerly known as status asthmaticus, is a common pediatric condition encountered in emergency departments, hospital wards, and pediatric intensive care units. Systemic corticosteroids and inhaled bronchodilators are evidence-based, initial treatments for patients with pediatric critical asthma. If clinical symptoms do not improve, pediatric practitioners often prescribe adjunctive medications including inhaled anticholinergics, intravenous ketamine, intravenous magnesium, intravenous short acting beta 2 agonists, and intravenous methylxanthines (such as aminophylline).
