An online 2-D strong cation exchange (SCX)-RP capillary liquid chromatographic (cLC) method with IT mass spectrometric (IT-MS/MS) detection for the simultaneous determination of prostaglandin (PG) A(1), PGD(2), PGE(1), PGE(2), PGF(2a), 6-keto-(6k)PGF(1a), and 15-Delta(12,14)-deoxy-PGJ(2) (15dPGJ(2)) in cell culture supernatants was developed and validated. Pretreatment of the cell culture supernatants included dilution and filtration, and the analysis time including all sample preparation steps was less than 50 min per sample. Peptides/proteins contained in the matrix were removed by the SCX column.

Background: The aim of this randomized study was to compare patient-reported outcome after laparoscopic versus open donor nephrectomy during 1 year follow-up. The evidence base has so far not allowed for a decision as to which method is superior as seen from a long-term quality of life-perspective.

Background: The ATM protein is activated as a result of ionizing radiation, and genetic variants of the ATM gene may therefore affect the level of radiation-induced damage. Individuals heterozygous for ATM mutations have been reported to have an increased risk of malignancy, especially breast cancer.

Materials And Methods: Norwegian breast cancer patients (272) treated with radiation (252 of which were evaluated for radiation-induced adverse side effects), 95 Norwegian women with no known history of cancer and 95 American breast cancer patients treated with radiation (44 of which developed ipsilateral breast tumour recurrence, IBTR) were screened for sequence variations in all exons of the ATM gene as well as known intronic variants by denaturating high performance liquid chromatography (dHPLC) followed by sequencing to determine the nature of the variant.

Receptor-bound and endocytosed fibroblast growth factor-1 (FGF-1) is able to cross the vesicle membrane and translocate to cytosol and nucleus. This suggests an intracellular role of FGF-1, which also signals by activating transmembrane FGF receptors. Phosphorylation of internalized FGF-1 by nuclear protein kinase C delta induces rapid export from the nuclei by a leptomycin B-sensitive pathway.

Background: The question of whether fracture healing and mechanical properties of the callus are influenced by osteoporosis (OP) is still not settled. Background: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare malignant disease, most commonly originating from appendiceal lesions and characterized by accumulation of mucinous tumor tissue in the peritoneal cavity. Since the disease is infrequent, the task of carrying out studies of treatment efficacy and disease biology in the clinical setting is challenging, warranting the development of relevant in vitro and in vivo PMP models.

Haemodynamic abnormalities have been documented in the chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), indicating functional disturbances of the autonomic nervous system responsible for cardiovascular control. This study was designed to explore the pathophysiology in adolescent CFS-patients by analysing RR-interval (RRI) variability and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) variability during mild orthostatic stress, using an algorithm which accounts for non-stationary biosignals. A total of 27 adolescents with CFS and 33 healthy control subjects having equal age- and sex distribution underwent 15 min of 20 degrees head-up tilt (HUT).

We describe the effect of propranolol in an adolescent with chronic fatigue syndrome and orthostatic intolerance. Our observations suggest that the head-up tilt-test and beta-blocker treatment might be considered in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and that enhanced sympathetic nervous activity might be part of the underlying pathophysiology.

2D-STE (two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography) is a novel echocardiographic modality that enables angle-independent assessment of myocardial deformation indices. In the present study, we tested whether peak systolic epsilon(parallel) (longitudinal strain) values measured by 2D-STE could identify areas of MI (myocardial infarction) as determined by CE MRI (contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging). The outer membrane secretin PilQ from Neisseria meningitidis binds DNA.

Neisseria meningitidis is naturally competent for transformation throughout its growth cycle. Transformation in neisserial species is coupled to the expression of type IV pili, which are present on the cell surface as bundled filamentous appendages, and are assembled, extruded and retracted by the pilus biogenesis components. During the initial phase of the transformation process, binding and uptake of DNA takes place with entry through a presumed outer-membrane channel into the periplasm.

Local recurrence of postoperative spindle cell nodules has not been reported, even after incomplete resection.

3-methyladenine DNA glycosylases initiate repair of cytotoxic and promutagenic alkylated bases in DNA. We demonstrate by comparative modelling that Bacillus cereus AlkD belongs to a new, fifth, structural superfamily of DNA glycosylases with an alpha-alpha superhelix fold comprising six HEAT-like repeats. The structure reveals a wide, positively charged groove, including a putative base recognition pocket.
