Article Synopsis
  • Liver transplantation is the primary treatment for end-stage liver disease, but there's limited information on the best imaging practices for monitoring children during the procedure.
  • A survey conducted by the European Society of Pediatric Radiology gathered feedback from 22 centers across 11 countries regarding their intraoperative imaging techniques.
  • Results showed that all centers use intraoperative ultrasound (US), mainly relying on color Doppler, but there's significant variation in how the ultrasound is conducted, including who operates the equipment and how often imaging is performed.

Background: Tocilizumab improves myocardial salvage index (MSI) in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), but its mechanisms of action are unclear. Here, we explored how cytokines were affected by tocilizumab and their correlations with neutrophils, C-reactive protein (CRP), troponin T, MSI and infarct size.

Methods: STEMI patients were randomised to receive a single dose of 280 mg tocilizumab (n=101) or placebo (n=98) before percutaneous coronary intervention.

Article Synopsis
  • Tocilizumab was investigated for its safety and effectiveness in improving skin and lung fibrosis in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) by analyzing data from the EUSTAR database.
  • The study compared 93 SSc patients treated with tocilizumab to 3180 patients receiving standard of care, measuring outcomes like skin scores and lung function over 12 months.
  • While no significant differences were found, the results leaned towards favoring tocilizumab, prompting further investigation into its potential effectiveness within a larger SSc population.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how classifying systemic sclerosis based on cutaneous subtypes compares to classifying it by autoantibody status in predicting patient outcomes.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from over 10,700 patients, finding no significant differences in prediction accuracy for survival and progression using either classification method.
  • - However, the autoantibody classification showed a notable improvement in predicting overall survival after four years compared to cutaneous classification, indicating a potential benefit in using autoantibody status for better prognostic assessments.

Scope: Inadequate intake of choline commonly leads to liver diseases. Methionine- and choline-deficient diets (MCDD) induce fatty liver in mice which is partly mediated by triglyceride (TG) lipolysis in white adipose tissues (WATs). Because Fatp4 knockdown has been shown to increase adipocyte lipolysis in vitro, here, the effects of MCDD on WAT lipolysis in aP2-Cre Fatp4-knockout (Fatp4 ) mice are determined.

COVID-19 salivary signature: diagnostic and research opportunities.

J Clin Pathol

August 2020

Laboratory of Virology (LIM-52), Institute of Tropical Medicine of São Paulo, School of Medicine, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil

The COVID-19 (caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)) epidemic started in Wuhan (Hubei Province, China) in mid-December 2019 and quickly spread across the world as a pandemic. As a key to tracing the disease and to implement strategies aimed at breaking the chain of disease transmission, extensive testing for SARS-CoV-2 was suggested. Although nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal swabs are the most commonly used biological samples for SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis, they have a number of limitations related to sample collection and healthcare personnel safety.
