Claw deformity of the foot is frequently seen in patients with diabetes mellitus. Percutaneous flexor tenotomy is a simple surgical procedure for the treatment of foot ulcers on the distal end of the toe caused by this deformity. This procedure can also be performed to prevent ulcers in claw toes that are at risk of ulceration.

Objective/background: Endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) is commonly used to treat abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). However, the incidence of long-term complications and the need for re-interventions after EVAR remain a concern. Newer generation stent grafts have encouraging short and mid-term outcomes, but thorough analysis of their long-term performance is necessary.

Health state utilities for infertility and subfertility.

Reprod Health

May 2019

Erasmus University Rotterdam, Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management, Burgemeester Oudlaan 50, Rotterdam, 3062 PA, The Netherlands.

Background: Health state utility values allow for comparison of treatments across different diseases. Utility values for fertility-impaired health states are currently unavailable. Such values are necessary in order to determine the relative costs-effectiveness of fertility treatments.

Background: Infected necrosis complicates 10% of all acute pancreatitis episodes and is associated with 15-20% mortality. The current standard treatment for infected necrotizing pancreatitis is the step-up approach (catheter drainage, followed, if necessary, by minimally invasive necrosectomy). Catheter drainage is preferably postponed until the stage of walled-off necrosis, which usually takes 4 weeks.

Atrial fibrillation (AF), is the most common sustained arrhythmia and is associated with a substantial increase in morbidity and mortality. Several studies have demonstrated sex-related differences in various aspects, including age at diagnosis, clinical manifestations, management and prognosis. These dissimilarities may dictate different approaches to management and could translate to differences in outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated how targeted therapy for underlying conditions affects the quality of life (QoL) of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF).
  • The RACE 3 study involved randomizing patients into targeted therapy or conventional treatment groups, with the targeted group receiving additional therapies and support.
  • Results showed significant improvements in various QoL metrics, including physical functioning and general health, in the targeted therapy group compared to the conventional approach after one year.

Can pulmonary foam arise after postmortem submersion in water? An animal experimental pilot study.

J Forensic Leg Med

February 2019

Amsterdam Public Health Service, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

It is difficult to differentiate drowning from postmortem submersion. Pulmonary foam can be found in bodies retrieved from water. It is unknown whether foam is a result of drowning or if it also forms after postmortem submersion.

Mid- and Long-Term Outcome of Currently Available Endografts for the Treatment of Infrarenal Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.

Surg Technol Int

November 2018

Department of Surgery, Division of Vascular Surgery, University Medical Center Groningen, University of Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Currently, there is a wide range of commercially available endografts for infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. Results of long-term follow up after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) are limited. Thereby, the durability of these endografts and the difference between manufacturers is not fully clear.

Celiac disease (CD) is known to be more prevalent in first-degree relatives of patients. In this retrospective cohort study of 609 relatives between 1994 and 2016, we investigated the effect of sex, HLA type, and age at time of index celiac diagnosis. Pearson's chi-square test and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis were used as statistical analyses.

Objective: To assess the effects of α-blockers compared to standard therapy or placebo for ureteric stones of ≤10 mm confirmed by imaging in adult patients presenting with symptoms of ureteric stone disease.

Patients And Methods: We performed a systematic search in multiple databases and grey literature with no restrictions on the language of publication or publication status, up until November 2017. We included randomised controlled trials evaluating ureteric stone passage in adult patients that compared α-blockers with standard therapy or placebo.

The Aquatic Decomposition Score (ADS) made by van Daalen et al., was developed to approximate the Post-Mortem Submersion Interval (PMSI) in bodies recovered in salt water. Since the decomposition process in salt water differs from the process in fresh water due to salinity, the temperature, and the depth of the water, we wanted to investigate whether there is a correlation between the ADS and the PMSI and if the ADS can be used to make an estimation of the PMSI in bodies recovered from fresh water.
