Introduction: Alcohol-related cues trigger relapse in patients with alcohol use disorders (AUDs). These cues may automatically activate motivational approach tendencies. Through computerised cognitive bias modification (CBM), the tendencies of patients with AUD to approach alcohol can be reduced.

Unfolding and identification of membrane proteins in situ.

Single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) uses the cantilever tip of an atomic force microscopy (AFM) to apply a force able to unfold a single protein. The obtained force-distance curve encodes the unfolding pathway, and from its analysis it is possible to characterize the folded domains. SMFS has been mostly used to study the unfolding of purified proteins, in solution or reconstituted in a lipid bilayer.

[Damage to teeth and oral mucosa caused by inhaled drugs: you can prevent it].

Background: Inhaled drugs for treating asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can reduce the oral pH, impair microbial homeostasis, and induce a decrease in salivary production. These mechanisms have potential for causing damage to the teeth and oral mucosa.

Case Description: Until December 2021, the Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre Lareb received reports of 210 dental and oral mucosal adverse events while using inhaled drugs.

Surgeon Personal Factors Associated with Care Strategies in Musculoskeletal Telehealth.

Background: Most surgeons used, or are currently using telehealth during the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic. We studied surgeon personal factors associated with relative use of telehealth during the worldwide height of the pandemic. (1) Are there any personal factors/characteristics associated with use and utilization of telehealth? (2) What are surgeon's perspectives/ opinions with regard to use of telehealth for five common upper extremity conditions in terms of future prospects and viability?

Methods: Hand and upper extremity surgeons in the Science of Variation Group (SOVG) were invited to participate in a web-based survey.

Which factors play a role in the decision of mothers to participate in child follow-up examinations after participation in an RCT?: a semi-quantitative study.

Objectives: To determine which factors contribute to the decision of mothers to participate with their child in follow-up (FU) examinations after participation in a randomised controlled trial (RCT) prior to conception.

Design: A cross-sectional survey, including Likert-scale items. Comparisons will be made between respondents who participated in all FU rounds of data collection and those who did not participate in any FU round with their child.

Light-driven molecular motors embedded in covalent organic frameworks.

The incorporation of molecular machines into the backbone of porous framework structures will facilitate nano actuation, enhanced molecular transport, and other out-of-equilibrium host-guest phenomena in well-defined 3D solid materials. In this work, we detail the synthesis of a diamine-based light-driven molecular motor and its incorporation into a series of imine-based polymers and covalent organic frameworks (COF). We study structural and dynamic properties of the molecular building blocks and derived self-assembled solids with a series of spectroscopic, diffraction, and theoretical methods.

Predicting the oxidation states of Mn ions in the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II using supervised and unsupervised machine learning.

Serial Femtosecond Crystallography at the X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) sources enabled the imaging of the catalytic intermediates of the oxygen evolution reaction of Photosystem II (PSII). However, due to the incoherent transition of the S-states, the resolved structures are a convolution from different catalytic states. Here, we train Decision Tree Classifier and K-means clustering models on Mn compounds obtained from the Cambridge Crystallographic Database to predict the S-state of the X-ray, XFEL, and CryoEM structures by predicting the Mn's oxidation states in the oxygen-evolving complex.

Surgeon preferences are associated with utilization of telehealth in fracture care.

Background: The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic has the potential to evoke lasting changes in the delivery of care, and the utilization of telehealth. We sought associations between surgeon personal factors and greater use of telehealth to treat fractures relative to in-person care.

Methods: Seventy-five fracture surgeons participated in a survey-based experiment.

Impact of displacement context on psychological distress in refugees resettled in Australia: a longitudinal population-based study.

Aims: Refugees typically spend years in a state of protracted displacement prior to permanent resettlement. Little is known about how various prior displacement contexts influence long-term mental health in resettled refugees. In this study, we aimed to determine whether having lived in refugee camps community settings prior to resettlement impacted the course of refugees' psychological distress over the 4 years following arrival in Australia.

[Safety measures in traffic; how risk compensation affects our behaviour].

In 2020, more than 600 people died as a result of a traffic crash in the Netherlands and 6,500 were hospitalized after they had sustained a serious injury (MAIS 3+). These numbers are much lower than those in the beginning of the seventies of the last century, when there were more than 3,000 road fatalities. To reduce the number of fatalities, many measures have been taken to avoid road crashes and reduce injury severity.

When and how teachers intervene in group discussions on experiences from practice in postgraduate medical education: an interactional analysis.

Medical educators constantly make decisions on when and how to intervene. Current literature provides general suggestions about types of teacher interventions. Our study aims to specify that knowledge by describing in detail the actions teachers do when intervening, the interactional consequences of those actions, and how these relate to teacher roles in group discussions.

Autism Symptoms in Children and Young Adults With Fragile X Syndrome, Angelman Syndrome, Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, and Neurofibromatosis Type 1: A Cross-Syndrome Comparison.

Objective: The etiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remains unclear, due to genetic heterogeneity and heterogeneity in symptoms across individuals. This study compares ASD symptomatology between monogenetic syndromes with a high ASD prevalence, in order to reveal syndrome specific vulnerabilities and to clarify how genetic variations affect ASD symptom presentation.

Methods: We assessed ASD symptom severity in children and young adults (aged 0-28 years) with Fragile X Syndrome (FXS, = 60), Angelman Syndrome (AS, = 91), Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1, = 279) and Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC, = 110), using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule and Social Responsiveness Scale.

Cognitive and Experienced Flexibility in Patients With Anorexia Nervosa and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Objective: Anorexia nervosa (AN) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) share a neuropsychological profile characterized by cognitive inflexibility as evident in set-shifting problems, and by strong detail focus. Clinically, both patient groups display a strong rigidity which may be explained by these neurocognitive difficulties. Cognitive inflexibility may hinder treatment uptake and help explain suboptimal treatment outcomes in both AN and OCD.

Health alliance for prudent prescribing and yield of antibiotics in a patient-centred perspective (HAPPY PATIENT): a before-and-after intervention and implementation study protocol.

Background: Excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics is the most important driver of antimicrobial resistance. The aim of the HAPPY PATIENT project is to evaluate the adaptation of European Union (EU) recommendations on the prudent use of antimicrobials in human health by evaluating the impact of a multifaceted intervention targeting different categories of healthcare professionals (HCPs) on common community-acquired infectious diseases, especially respiratory and urinary tract infections.

Methods/design: HAPPY PATIENT was initiated in January 2021 and is planned to end in December 2023.

Background: Acute-on-chronic liver failure encompasses an acute deterioration of liver function in patients with pre-existent cirrhosis. Sometimes the clinical picture of acute-on-chronic liver failure is misleading and may not be secondary to primary liver disease, as described in our case.

Case Description: A 65-year-old woman with cirrhosis was transferred to our transplantation centre because of suspected acute-on-chronic liver failure.

[Rotavirus vaccination for all Dutch infants].

Recently, the Netherlands Health Council (HC) issued an updated advice on rotavirus vaccination. Rotavirus gastro-enteritis primarily affects young children, of whom, in the Netherlands, annually ~2700 end up in the hospital and 5-7 die. In 2017, the HC judged positively on rotavirus vaccination of young children, but also concluded that the cost-effectiveness of general vaccination was unfavorable.

Developmental language disorder in sequential bilinguals: Characterising word properties in spontaneous speech.

The current study sought to investigate whether word properties can facilitate the identification of developmental language disorder (DLD) in sequential bilinguals by analyzing properties in nouns and verbs in L2 spontaneous speech as potential DLD markers. Measures of semantic (imageability, concreteness), lexical (frequency, age of acquisition) and phonological (phonological neighbourhood, word length) properties were computed for nouns and verbs produced by 15 sequential bilinguals (5;7) with DLD and 15 age-matched controls with diverse L1 backgrounds. Linear mixed modelling revealed a significant interaction of group and word category on phonological neighbourhood values but no differences across imageability, concreteness, frequency, age of acquisition, and word length measures in spontaneous speech.

Freestanding non-covalent thin films of the propeller-shaped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon decacyclene.

Molecularly thin, nanoporous thin films are of paramount importance in material sciences. Their use in a wide range of applications requires control over their chemical functionalities, which is difficult to achieve using current production methods. Here, the small polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon decacyclene is used to form molecular thin films, without requiring covalent crosslinking of any kind.

Arousal state affects perceptual decision-making by modulating hierarchical sensory processing in a large-scale visual system model.

Arousal levels strongly affect task performance. Yet, what arousal level is optimal for a task depends on its difficulty. Easy task performance peaks at higher arousal levels, whereas performance on difficult tasks displays an inverted U-shape relationship with arousal, peaking at medium arousal levels, an observation first made by Yerkes and Dodson in 1908.

Perioperative fluid management and outcomes in adult deceased donor liver transplantation - A systematic review of the literature and expert panel recommendations.

Background: Fluid management practices during and after liver transplantation vary widely among centers despite better understanding of the pathophysiology of end-stage liver disease and of the effects of commonly used fluids. This reflects a lack of high quality trials in this setting, but also provides a rationale for both systematic review of all relevant studies in liver recipients and evaluation of new evidence from closely related domains, including hepatology, non-transplant abdominal surgery, and critical care.

Objectives: To develop evidence-based recommendations for perioperative fluid management to optimize immediate and short-term outcomes following liver transplantation.

Artificial Protein Cage with Unusual Geometry and Regularly Embedded Gold Nanoparticles.

Artificial protein cages have great potential in a number of areas including cargo capture and delivery and as artificial vaccines. Here, we investigate an artificial protein cage whose assembly is triggered by gold nanoparticles. Using biochemical and biophysical methods we were able to determine both the mechanical properties and the gross compositional features of the cage which, combined with mathematical models and biophysical data, allowed the structure of the cage to be predicted.

[Clinical applications of hair analysis in the Netherlands].

Hair analysis has been known for its role in forensic science. However, it may also have an important role in the clinical approach of various exposures, for example drugs and heavy metals. In the Netherlands, it is used infrequently probably because clinicians are not familiar with this diagnostic possibility.
