Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluates the effectiveness of ICD-10 codes in identifying postoperative complications (PCs) compared to manually reviewing electronic health records (EHRs) using data from 11,827 surgical cases in Denmark.
  • Manual curation identified 1,047 PCs, while ICD-10 codes only captured 439, showing a low accuracy of about 20.8% for ICD-10 in detecting these complications.
  • The study highlights that PCs significantly increase healthcare resource usage and costs, with findings indicating annual additional costs of €25.5 million, far exceeding estimates based on ICD-10 codes, underscoring the need for better detection methods for surgical quality assessment.

Introduction: For PDAC patients undergoing resection, it remains unclear whether metastases to the paraaortic lymph nodes (PALN+) have any prognostic significance and whether metastases should lead to the operation not being carried out. Our hypothesis is that PALN + status would be associated with short overall survival (OS) compared with PALN-, but longer OS compared with patients undergoing surgical exploration only (EXP).

Methods: Patients with registered PALN removal from the nationwide Danish Pancreatic Cancer Database (DPCD) from May 1st 2011 to December 31st 2020 were assessed.

Methotrexate (MTX) is a mainstay therapeutic agent administered at high doses for the treatment of pediatric and adult malignancies, such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia, osteosarcoma, and lymphoma. Despite the vast evidence for clinical efficacy, high-dose MTX displays significant inter-individual pharmacokinetic variability. Delayed MTX clearance can lead to prolonged, elevated exposure, causing increased risks for nephrotoxicity, mucositis, seizures, and neutropenia.

Joint EAPCI/ACVC expert consensus document on percutaneous ventricular assist devices.

Eur Heart J Acute Cardiovasc Care

June 2021

Department of Adult Intensive Care Unit, Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, Royal Brompton Hospital, Sydney Street, SW3 6NP London, UK.

There has been a significant increase in the use of short-term percutaneous ventricular assist devices (pVADs) as acute circulatory support in cardiogenic shock and to provide haemodynamic support during interventional procedures, including high-risk percutaneous coronary interventions. Although frequently considered together, pVADs differ in their haemodynamic effects, management, indications, insertion techniques, and monitoring requirements. This consensus document summarizes the views of an expert panel by the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI) and the Association for Acute Cardiovascular Care (ACVC) and appraises the value of short-term pVAD.

Classics in Neuroimaging: The Serotonergic 2A Receptor System-from Discovery to Modern Molecular Imaging.

ACS Chem Neurosci

June 2018

Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences , University of Copenhagen, Jagtvej 160 , 2100 Copenhagen , Denmark.

Already in 1953, Woolley and Shaw speculated that serotonin could be involved in a range of central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) displayed an important role in this respect. It was used not only to antagonize biological effects of serotonin and to study the system itself, but also to identify serotonergic subtype receptors.
