International Expert-Based Consensus Definition, Classification Criteria, and Minimum Data Elements for Osteoradionecrosis of the Jaw: An Inter-Disciplinary Modified Delphi Study.

Purpose: Osteoradionecrosis of the jaw (ORNJ) is a severe iatrogenic disease characterized by bone death after radiation therapy (RT) to the head and neck. With over 9 published definitions and at least 16 classification systems, the true incidence and severity of ORNJ are obscured by lack of a standard for disease definition and severity assessment, leading to inaccurate estimation of incidence, reporting ambiguity, and likely under-diagnosis worldwide. This study aimed to achieve consensus on an explicit definition and phenotype of ORNJ and related precursor states through data standardization to facilitate effective diagnosis, monitoring, and multidisciplinary management of ORNJ.

How spinal GABAergic circuits modulate cerebral processing of postsurgical pain.

Post-surgical pain affects millions each year, hindering recovery and quality of life. Surgical procedures cause tissue damage and inflammation, leading to peripheral and central sensitization, resulting in pain at rest or hyperalgesia to mechanical stimuli, among others. In a rat model for post-surgical pain, spinal GABAergic transmission via GABA receptors reduces mechanical hypersensitivity but has no effect on pain at rest.

Prevalence of depression and association to socioeconomic position. Results from the Lolland-Falster Health Study.

Purpose: To describe the prevalence of self-reported depression in a socioeconomically deprived area in Denmark and the association to socioeconomic position (SEP) defined by education, occupation, and being in financial strain.

Method: 13,955 adults completing the Major Depression Inventory (MDI) in the Lolland-Falster Health Study questionnaire were included.Multivariate logistic regression on symptoms of depression based on MDI sum score and ICD-10 scores, associated to education, occupation, and financial strain - unadjusted and adjusted for sex and age group.

Analgesic Overdose in Patients With Dental Pain. A Cross-Sectional Study in Two Dental Emergency Clinics.

Dental pain is common, and many patients use analgesics to alleviate the pain. Analgesics are readily accessible, and overdosing may lead to severe complications. This study explores the extent of analgesic overdosing in patients with dental pain.

Trends in utilization of tramadol and other opioids in Denmark 2017-2023: A nationwide drug utilization study.

The use of tramadol and other opioids for pain management has been accompanied by a multitude of challenges and concerns worldwide. The use of tramadol saw a decline in Denmark during 2017-2019 accompanied by a slight increase in the use of morphine and oxycodone. Using the Danish National Prescription Registry and utilizing data until and including 2023, we aimed to provide updated data on the utilization patterns of tramadol and other opioids in Denmark.

Psychometric validation of the Copenhagen Hip and Groin Outcome Score (HAGOS) and Oxford Hip Score (OHS) in patients with hip-abductor tendon pathology.

Objective: Validated patient-reported outcome measures for patients with hip-abductor tendon pathology are lacking. Recent studies indicate that the Copenhagen Hip and Groin Outcome Score (HAGOS), in the original or the revised scoring format, and the Oxford Hip Score (OHS) may be relevant for use in patients with hip-abductor tendon pathology. The objective of this study was to assess the validity of the Danish version of the HAGOS, the revised HAGOS, and the OHS psychometrically in patients with hip-abductor tendon pathology.

Melatonin secretion across puberty: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Melatonin levels decrease with aging and substantially during puberty. Studies have presented distinct melatonin levels in patients with disorders related to their pubertal development compared to healthy controls. The discrepancy suggests that a decrease in melatonin concentrations seen during adolescence might be related to the physical, hormonal, and/or neuronal alterations that occur during the pubertal period.

amVAE: Age-aware multimorbidity clustering using variational autoencoders.

Multimorbidity, the co-occurrence of multiple chronic conditions within the same individual, is increasing globally. This is a challenge for the single patients, as these individuals are subject to a heavy disease and treatment burden, yet evidence on the epidemiology and consequences of multimorbidity remains underexplored. Historically, studies aiming to understand multimorbidity patterns predominantly utilized cross-sectional data, neglecting the essential temporal dynamics which shape multimorbidity progression.

Polycystic ovary syndrome and risk of differentiated thyroid cancer: A nationwide, register-based cohort study based on Danish health data.

Objectives: To evaluate the association between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and the risk of differentiated and papillary thyroid cancer.

Methods: We included all individuals assigned female at birth and born during 1962-1996 in Denmark. Information on vital status, PCOS- and cancer diagnoses, and covariates were attained from various Danish nationwide registers.

Introduction: Studies have shown that blood biomarkers can differentiate dementia disorders. However, the diagnosis of dementia still relies primarily on cerebrospinal fluid and imaging modalities. The new disease-modifying treatments call for more widely applicable biomarkers.

No Bacterial Biomass Detected in Tissue From Patients With Ovarian Cancer and Serous Tubal Intraepithelial Carcinomas Using 16S rDNA Sequencing.

The ovarian oncobiome is subject to increasing scientific focus, but a potential link between bacterial dysbiosis and ovarian carcinogenesis remains controversial. Our primary aim was to characterize the bacterial microbiota in epithelial ovarian cancer samples. Secondarily, we aimed to compare results from the bacterial microbiota in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded ovarian tissue samples from 194 patients with epithelial ovarian cancer, fallopian tube tissue samples from 16 patients with serous tubal intraepithelial carcinomas and in benign fallopian tube tissue samples from 25 patients.

Ages at coronary heart disease and death in familial hypercholesterolaemia: a Danish nationwide study spanning 44 years.

Background And Aims: Familial hypercholesterolaemia leads to lifelong elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol with increased risk of coronary heart disease and pre-mature death. It is unknown whether the prognosis for individuals with familial hypercholesterolaemia has improved over the past four decades as registration of this condition has been limited worldwide. However, in Danish nationwide registries, modified ICD coding has allowed such registration since 1978.

Childhood vaccinations and the risk of leukemia: A nationwide cohort study.

A protective effect of childhood vaccinations on leukemia risk, particularly acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), has been hypothesized, though findings are inconsistent. We used a nationwide cohort of Danish children born 1997-2018 (n = 1,360,230), to examine associations between childhood vaccinations and leukemia (<20 years) using registry data (follow-up: December 31, 2018). Cox proportional hazard models with age as the underlying time estimated hazard ratios (HRs) for leukemia (any, ALL, acute myeloid [AML], and other), comparing vaccinated with unvaccinated children.

Clinical validation of explainable AI for fetal growth scans through multi-level, cross-institutional prospective end-user evaluation.

We aimed to develop and evaluate Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) for fetal ultrasound using actionable concepts as feedback to end-users, using a prospective cross-center, multi-level approach. We developed, implemented, and tested a deep-learning model for fetal growth scans using both retrospective and prospective data. We used a modified Progressive Concept Bottleneck Model with pre-established clinical concepts as explanations (feedback on image optimization and presence of anatomical landmarks) as well as segmentations (outlining anatomical landmarks).

Parental experience of change following VIPP-SD in families with preschool children with externalizing behavior: A qualitative interview study.

Background: Insensitive parenting and ineffective disciplinary strategies are known risk factors for child externalizing behavior. The Video-feedback Intervention to promote Positive Parenting and Sensitive Discipline (VIPP-SD) has documented effect in promoting sensitive parenting, but little is known on how VIPP-SD is experienced by parents. This study explores how parents of preschool children with externalizing behaviors experience change following VIPP-SD delivered by trained childcare providers.

Socioeconomic position and sudden cardiac death: A Danish nationwide study.

Aims: The aim of this study was to examine differences in incidence rates of all-cause mortality (ACM) and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in persons of differing socioeconomic position (SEP).

Methods: All deaths in Denmark from 01-01-2010 to 31-12-2010 (1 year) were included. Autopsy reports, death certificates, discharge summaries and nationwide health registries were reviewed to identify cases of SCD.

Health-related quality of life at diagnosis and follow-up in Faroese and Danish patients with inflammatory bowel disease - a Faroese IBD cohort study.

Background And Aims: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have lower health-related quality of life (HRQoL) than the general population. The highest incidence and prevalence rates of IBD in the world are found in the Faroe Islands, however, the HRQoL of Faroese patients is unknown. This study aimed to determine their HRQoL at diagnosis and two years of follow-up in comparison with Danish patients.

Impact of COVID-19 on testing, positive cases, patient characteristics, and hospital contacts for respiratory syncytial virus, influenza, and pneumococcus in Danish children.

Background: Respiratory infections substantially impact pediatric health. The COVID-19 pandemic introduced widespread non-pharmaceutical interventions, which influenced the incidence of common respiratory infections. This comprehensive study investigates the impact of these interventions on the incidence of respiratory syncytial virus, influenza, and invasive pneumococcal disease in Danish children.

Dual test gas pulmonary diffusing capacity in patients with idiopathic scoliosis 40 years after diagnosis.

There is limited knowledge on diffusing capacity in scoliosis patients. It remains to be determined if impaired pulmonary diffusing capacity is mostly influenced by reduced alveolar-capillary membrane diffusing capacity (D), reduced pulmonary capillary blood volume (V) or both. This study aims to report findings from dual test gas pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide and nitric oxide (D) with quantification of pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide corrected for haemoglobin with a five s breath-hold (D) and nitric oxide with a five s breath-hold (D), D and V.
