September 2024

Department of Morphology, Institute of Anatomy and Anthropology, Riga Stradins University, Dzirciema Street 16, LV-1007 Riga, Latvia.

The aim of the study was to perform treatment of juniper wood to obtain wood material with a density and mechanical properties comparable to bone, thus producing a potential material for use in osteosynthesis bone implants. In the first step, partial delignification of wood sample was obtained by Kraft cooking. The second step was extraction with ethanol, ethanol-water mixture, saline, and water to prevent the release of soluble compounds and increase biocompatibility.

Complex microvascular techniques and in-depth knowledge of blood rheology and microanastomosis function are required for success in microvascular flap surgery. Substantial progress has been achieved in preventing complications, but the rate of flap loss is still significant and can have significant adverse effects on the patient. Flap thrombosis, flap hematoma, and flap loss are the most frequent and severe major surgical complications.

Institute of Biomaterials and Bioengineering, Faculty of Natural Science and Technology, Riga Technical University, Riga, Latvia.

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a protein matrix with growth factors and immune cells extracted from venous blood via centrifugation. Previous studies proved it a beneficial biomaterial for bone and soft tissue regeneration in dental surgeries. Researchers have combined PRF with a wide range of biomaterials for composite preparation as it is biocompatible and easily acquirable.

Background: Only 10-40% of patients with cancer in low-income and middle-income countries were able to access curative or palliative radiotherapy in 2015. We aimed to assess the current status of diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy services in the Baltic countries, eastern Europe, central Asia, and the Caucasus by collecting and analysing local data.

Methods: This Access to Radiotherapy (ART) comprehensive analysis used data from 12 countries: the three Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania), two countries in eastern Europe (Moldova and Ukraine), four countries in central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan), and three countries in the Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia), referred to here as the ART countries.

Innovative Hemp Shive-Based Bio-Composites: Part I: Modification of Potato Starch Binder by Sodium Meta-Silicate and Glycerol.

Materials (Basel)

October 2024

Institute of Sustainable Building Materials and Engineering Systems, Riga Technical University, Kipsalas 6A, LV-1048 Riga, Latvia.

The growing demand for sustainable building materials has boosted research on plant-based composite materials, including hemp shives bound with biodegradable binders. This study investigates the enhancement of potato-starch-based binders with sodium metasilicate and glycerol to produce eco-friendly bio-composites incorporating hemp shives. Potato starch, while renewable, often results in suboptimal mechanical properties and durability in its unmodified form.

September 2024

Research Institute of Electronics, Shizuoka University, 3-5-1 Johoku, Naka-ku, Hamamatsu 432-8561, Japan.

We study a quantum cone, a novel structure composed of multiple quantum dots with gradually decreasing diameters from the base to the top. The dot distribution leads to a dispersive radiated spectrum. The blue edge of the spectrum is determined by the quantum confinement of excitons on top of the cones, while the red edge is determined by the bandgap of a semiconductor.

Composite biomaterials with excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability are crucial in tissue engineering. In this work, a composite protein and polysaccharide photo-cross-linkable hydrogel was prepared using silk fibroin methacrylate (SFMA) and hyaluronic acid methacrylate (HAMA). SFMA was obtained by the methacrylation of degummed SF with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), while HA was methacrylated by 2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride (AEMA).

: Microvascular flap surgery has become a routine option for defect correction. The role of von Willebrand factor antigen (VWF:Ag) in the pathophysiology of flap complications is not fully understood. We aim to investigate the predictive value of VWF:Ag for microvascular flap complications and explore the relationship between chronic inflammation and VWF:Ag.

Lifecycle Assessment and Multi-Parameter Optimization of Lightweight Cement Mortar with Nano Additives.

Materials (Basel)

September 2024

Laboratory of Concrete Technology, Institute of Building Materials, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Linkmenu Str. 28, LT-08217 Vilnius, Lithuania.

With the growing global concerns regarding sustainable development in the building and construction industries, concentration only on the engineering properties of building materials can no longer meet the requirements. Although some studies have been implemented based on the lifecycle assessment of lightweight cement-based materials, very few attempts have been made pertaining to multi-criteria optimization, especially when fly ash cenospheres are used as lightweight aggregates and nano additives are incorporated as modifying admixtures. This investigation utilized cenospheres as fine aggregates to produce green, sustainable, lightweight cement mortar.

Unipolar quantum optoelectronics for high speed direct modulation and transmission in 8-14 µm atmospheric window.

Nat Commun

September 2024

Laboratoire de Physique de l'ENS, Département de Physique, École Normale Supérieure, Université PSL, Sorbonne Université, Université Paris Cité, CNRS, 75005, Paris, France.

The large mid-infrared (MIR) spectral region, ranging from 2.5 µm to 25 µm, has remained under-exploited in the electromagnetic spectrum, primarily due to the absence of viable transceiver technologies. Notably, the 8-14 µm long-wave infrared (LWIR) atmospheric transmission window is particularly suitable for free-space optical (FSO) communication, owing to its combination of low atmospheric propagation loss and relatively high resilience to turbulence and other atmospheric disturbances.

Xenografts are commonly used for bone regeneration in dental and orthopaedic domains to repair bone voids and other defects. The first-generation xenografts were made through sintering, which deproteinizes them and alters their crystallinity, while later xenografts are produced using cold-temperature chemical treatments to maintain the structural collagen phase. However, the impact of collagen and the crystalline phase on physicochemical properties have not been elucidated.

Ultrafast and Reproducible Synthesis of Tailor-Made Octacalcium Phosphate.

ACS Omega

August 2024

Institute of Biomaterials and Bioengineering, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology, Riga Technical University, Pulka St 3, Riga LV-1007, Latvia.

Octacalcium phosphate (OCP) has excellent bone formation ability and a good resorption rate as compared to the commercial bone substitutes [, Bio-Oss (Geistlich Pharma AG) and MBCP+ (Biomatlante)], as well as synthesized biomaterials (hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate). The synthesis approach to obtain phase-pure OCP possesses a great challenge due to its complex reaction mechanism and narrow synthesis window. Thus, the current study aimed to overcome the synthesis challenges and to define the precise reaction conditions required for controllable and reproducible synthesis of OCP.

A measurement is presented of a ratio observable that provides a measure of the azimuthal correlations among jets with large transverse momentum . This observable is measured in multijet events over the range of - based on data collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 134 . The results are compared with predictions from Monte Carlo parton-shower event generator simulations, as well as with fixed-order perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) predictions at next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy obtained with different parton distribution functions (PDFs) and corrected for nonperturbative and electroweak effects.
