Life-Threatening Tracheal Diverticulum Rupture Following Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: A Rare Case Report.

BACKGROUND We present an exceptional case of asystole and tracheal diverticulum rupture as a result of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) immediately following laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed at Riga 1st Hospital. Tracheal rupture after tracheal intubation is a severe but very rare complication that can be fatal. We present an incidental finding of the tracheal diverticulum and its rupture during CPR.

Percutaneous Gastrostomy Tube Placement under Quadratus Lumborum Block: A Case Report.

The quadratus lumborum block is a technique that is not widely applied in abdominal surgery. The influence of the mode of anesthesia on the outcome of polymorbid patients is a controversial issue in the medical literature. We report a case in which we performed a quadratus lumborum block type 2 on a woman who was admitted to Riga's 1st hospital in need of gastrostomy, due to difficulty swallowing solid foods and liquids caused by hypopharynx carcinoma.

Intravenous Immunoglobulin Therapy-Induced Erythema Multiforme in a Patient with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.

This case report discusses immunoglobulin-induced erythema multiforme (EM), a rare and understudied condition that requires further investigation. The report presents the case of a 69-year-old woman with a history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia who developed an acute hypersensitivity reaction to intravenous gamma globulin medication. The patient received intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) to normalize and stabilize her immunoglobulin levels and reduce the risk of recurrent infections due to her immunodeficiency with predominantly antibody defects.

Use of ceftriaxone as an alternative treatment method in pregnant women diagnosed with syphilis - a single centre experience.

Background: There are few data on the use of ceftriaxone in pregnant women diagnosed with syphilis. The aim of this study was to investigate the safety and efficacy of ceftriaxone as an alternative treatment option for syphilis during pregnancy.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of 79 pregnant women diagnosed with syphilis and treated with ceftriaxone was conducted.

Neuropathic ulcers: a focused review.

Neuropathic ulcers or diabetic foot ulcers are preventable ulcers associated with diabetes mellitus. These ulcers occur in the setting of unrecognized trauma, peripheral neuropathy, and foot deformities; however, they are often complicated by peripheral arterial disease and infection. Approximately 15% of individuals with a neuropathic ulcer require limb amputation as a result of infection.

Hidradenitis suppurativa in surgeons' practice: Prevalence and treatment approach according to the Hurley stage in Latvia.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, recurrent, debilitating, and frequently misdiagnosed inflammatory skin disease that often requires surgical intervention. To assess the prevalence of HS patients in surgeons' practice and surgeons' approach to treating HS patients, we created a self-administered, Hurley stage-based questionnaire that was distributed during the Latvian Association of Surgeons meeting. Of the total 60 questionnaires distributed, 56 (93%) were collected and 53 (88%) of them were considered valid.

Structural and ultrastructural alterations in human olfactory pathways and putative associations with human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infection were studied. The olfactory bulb/tract samples from 20 subjects with an unspecified encephalopathy determined by pathomorphological examination of the brain autopsy, 17 healthy age-matched and 16 younger controls were used. HHV-6 DNA was detected in 60, 29, and 19% of cases in these groups, respectively.
