The title compound, CHNO, crystallizes in the monoclinic centrosymmetric space group, 2/, with four mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit, thus there is no crystallographically imposed symmetry and it is a racemic mixture. The structure consists of a six-membered unsaturated ring bound to a five-membered pyrrolidine-2,5-dione ring N-bound to a six-membered piperidine-2,6-dione ring and thus has the same basic skeleton as thalidomide, except for the six-membered unsaturated ring substituted for the aromatic ring. In the crystal, the mol-ecules are linked into inversion dimers by (8) hydrogen bonding involving the N-H group.

The bone marrow is a unique microenvironment where blood cells are produced and released into the circulation. At the top of the blood cell lineage are the hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), which are thought to reside in close association with the bone marrow vascular endothelial cells (Morrison and Scadden, Nature 505:327-334, 2014). Recent efforts at characterizing the HSC niche have prompted us to make close examinations of two distinct types of blood vessel in the bone marrow, the arteriolar vessels originating from arteries and sinusoidal vessels connected to veins.

Many autotrophic microorganisms are likely to adapt to scarcity in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC; CO + HCO + CO) with CO concentrating mechanisms (CCM) that actively transport DIC across the cell membrane to facilitate carbon fixation. Surprisingly, DIC transport has been well studied among cyanobacteria and microalgae only. The deep-sea vent gammaproteobacterial chemolithoautotroph has a low-DIC inducible CCM, though the mechanism for uptake is unclear, as homologs to cyanobacterial transporters are absent.

Trauma recovery processes may be understood within a socioecological model. Individual factors (such as sex of the survivor) and microsystem factors (including trauma characteristics) have been studied extensively. However, there is a paucity of research examining the effects of macrosystem factors on the impact of trauma-especially examining how the response of the first person to whom the survivor disclosed affects trauma-related cognitions and distress.

A new conceptualization and measurement of social dominance orientation-individual differences in the preference for group based hierarchy and inequality-is introduced. In contrast to previous measures of social dominance orientation that were designed to be unidimensional, the new measure (SDO7) embeds theoretically grounded subdimensions of SDO-SDO-Dominance (SDO-D) and SDO-Egalitarianism (SDO-E). SDO-D constitutes a preference for systems of group-based dominance in which high status groups forcefully oppress lower status groups.

Choline Supplementation With a Structured Lipid in Children With Cystic Fibrosis: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial.

J Pediatr Gastroenterol Nutr

April 2016

*Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA ‡The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey NJ §Biostatistics and Data Management Core ||Department of Radiology, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA ¶Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA #Division of Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cincinnati, OH **Avanti Polar Lipids, Inc, Alabaster, AL.

Background: Choline depletion is seen in cystic fibrosis (CF) and pancreatic insufficiency in spite of enzyme treatment and may result in liver, fatty acid, and muscle abnormalities. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of an easily absorbed choline-rich structured lipid (LYM-X-SORB™ [LXS]) to improve choline status.

Methods: Children with CF and pancreatic insufficiency were randomized to LXS or placebo in a 12-month double blind trial.

Safety and Efficacy of High-dose Daily Vitamin D3 Supplementation in Children and Young Adults With Sickle Cell Disease.

J Pediatr Hematol Oncol

July 2015

*The School of Health Sciences, The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, Galloway, NJ †University Hospital Umberto I, Sapienza University, Rome, Italy ‡Department of Pediatrics, Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition §Division of Hematology, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia ∥Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA.

Suboptimal vitamin D (vit D) status (<32 ng/mL) is ubiquitous among African American children with type SS sickle cell disease (SCD-SS). The vit D supplemental dose to normalize vit D status is unknown. Five to 20-year-old African American children with (n=21) and without (n=23) SCD-SS were randomized to vit D3 supplementation (4000 or 7000 IU/d) and evaluated at 6 and 12 weeks for changes in vit D and SCD status.

This qualitative study explored the benefits of implementing (international) teleconsultation in a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) curriculum. Twenty-one students provided supervised teleconsultative services to individuals with disabilities in Guatemala and were responsible for completing assessments, setting goals, and providing resources to address goals and improve quality of life. Data were collected through student presentations and coded for relevant themes.

Introduction: This paper describes how American federal, state, and local organizations created, sourced, and disseminated emergency information via social media in preparation for several winter storms in one county in the state of New Jersey (USA).

Methods: Postings submitted to Twitter for three winter storm periods were collected from selected organizations, along with a purposeful sample of select private local users. Storm-related posts were analyzed for stylistic features (hashtags, retweet mentions, embedded URLs).

Women In Steady Exercise Research (WISER) Sister: study design and methods.

Contemp Clin Trials

March 2015

Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, University of Pennsylvania, 8th floor Blockley Hall, 423 Guardian Drive, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6021, USA.

Purpose: Women at elevated risk for breast cancer are motivated to reduce their risk. Current approaches rely primarily on hormonal intervention. A preventive exercise intervention might address the same hormonal issues, yet have fewer serious side effects and less negative impact on quality of life as compared to prophylactic mastectomy.

Control of complex processes is a major goal of network analyses. Most approaches to control nonlinearly coupled systems require the network topology and/or network dynamics. Unfortunately, neither the full set of participating nodes nor the network topology is known for many important systems.

Hopelessness in adolescents.

J Affect Disord

March 2015

Psychology Program The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, 101 Vera King Farris Drive Galloway, NJ 08205-9441, USA. Electronic address:

Background: The hopelessness scales devised by Beck and by Kazdin have been used in hundreds of studies of both non-clinical and clinical samples. The present study identified non-clinical adolescent samples to see if the mean scores differed by age, sex, year of publication of the study, and nation.

Methods: Studies of school students administered the Beck Hopelessness Scale or the Kazdin Hopelessness Scale for Children were identified from a literature search using PsycINFO and the search term "hopelessness" anywhere in the text.

In a community sample of 225 adults, scores on the Compulsive Buying Scale were associated with scores on the subscales of the Executive Personal Finance Scale (rs = -.35 to -.70) and the Money Attitudes Scale (positively with using money for impressing others, and negatively with saving and planning).

We tested the misperception hypothesis of drawing errors, which states that drawing accuracy is strongly influenced by the perceptual encoding of a to-be-drawn stimulus. We used a highly controlled experimental paradigm in which nonartist participants made perceptual judgements and drawings of angles under identical stimulus exposure conditions. Experiment 1 examined the isosceles/scalene triangle angle illusion; congruent patterns of bias in the perception and drawing tasks were found for 40 and 60° angles, but not for 20 or 80° angles, providing mixed support for the misperception hypothesis.
