EBV+ diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) not otherwise specified (NOS) is a new entity confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2017. In this new entity, the virus may contribute to a tolerogenic microenvironment. Traces of the virus have been described in DLBCL with more sensitive methods, in cases that were originally diagnosed as negative.

CD4 T cells play a key role in Epstein Barr virus (EBV) infection, by modulating latent antigen expression, and exhibiting cytotoxic and regulatory properties. Our aim was to evaluate the presence of Granzyme B (GZMB) and Foxp3 CD4 T cells at different EBV infection status and latency profiles. We examined CD4, GZMB, Foxp3, IL10, TGF-β, CD4-GZMB and CD4-Foxp3 expression at the tonsils of pediatric patients with different infective status and EBV latency profiles.

Background: Endoscopic skull base surgery is constantly evolving and its scope has expanded. The acquisition of surgical skills involves a long learning curve with significant risks for the patient. Therefore, training in the laboratory has become essential to achieve appropriate proficiency and reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with these procedures.

Macrophages are exceptionally flexible cells. The presence of inflammatory cytokines such as IFN-γ and TNF-α results in an M1 (CD68) activation, while cytokines such as IL-10 or TGF-β induce the M2 (CD163) activation. Our aim was to study the behavior of peripheral cytokines involved in macrophage polarization and relate them with tissue findings to further comprehend the role of macrophages in EBV pediatric infection.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has a detrimental impact on disease progression. Increasing evidence points to extracellular vesicles (EVs) as important players of the host-viral cross-talk. The microRNAs (miRNAs), as essential components of EVs cargo, are key regulators of normal cellular processes and also promote viral replication, viral pathogenesis, and disease progression.

Introduction: In Argentina, a pentavalent whole-cell pertussis vaccine (wP) is used in the National Immunization Program, however hexavalent acellular pertussis (aP) vaccines are available in the private market.
Objective: To describe parent or guardianś perceptions on reactogenicity, daily routine and satisfaction after a first or third dose of a wP-pentavalent plus IPV (wP-group) or the fully-liquid aP-hexavalent vaccine (aP-group) in infants.
Material And Methods: This was a prospective observational and analytical study.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is an usually harmless virus whose oncogenic properties in vitro are related to its ability to transform lymphoid cells, and, in consequence, it can be associated with lymphomas. Since a few studies detected EBV presence in supposedly EBV-negative lymphomas, our aim was to evaluate EBV presence by sensitive gene expression assays in the tonsils from healthy pediatric donors from a region with high incidence of EBV-associated lymphomas. EBERs transcripts were detected by View RNA ISH in all cases, even in cases assessed negative by widely used in situ hybridization.

Objective: The aim of this study was to add to the understanding of nerve branching patterns in the proximal forearm and consider optimal nerve transfer options to address the various injuries that affect the function of the upper extremity.
Methods: Eleven upper-extremity cadaveric specimens were dissected to expose the radial, median, and ulnar nerves in the proximal forearm. The site of origin of nerve branches from the major nerves was assessed, with measurements made in reference to the lateral epicondyle for the radial nerve branches and the medial epicondyle for the median and ulnar nerve branches.

In 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed a new entity, Epstein Barr virus (EBV) + Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL), not otherwise specified (NOS). Traces of EBV transcripts were described in lymphomas, including DLBCL, that were diagnosed as EBV negative by conventional methods. The aim of this study was to detect viral genome by qPCR, as well as LMP1 and EBNA2 transcripts, with a more sensitive method in DLBCL cases from Argentina.

Globally, the human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the major causes of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) in children. The scarcity of complete genome data limits our understanding of RSV spatiotemporal distribution, evolution, and viral variant emergence. Nasopharyngeal samples collected from hospitalized pediatric patients from Buenos Aires tested positive for RSV LRTI during four consecutive outbreaks (2014-2017) were randomly subsampled for RSV complete genome sequencing.

Background: External quality assessments (EQAs) for the molecular detection of human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are necessary to ensure the standardisation of reliable results. The Phase II, 2019-2020 World Health Organization (WHO) RSV EQA included 28 laboratories in 26 countries. The EQA panel evaluated performance in the molecular detection and subtyping of RSV-A and RSV-B.

Background: Noroviruses (NVs) are recognized as the leading cause of sporadic and epidemic acute gastroenteritis worldwide, in all age groups. Although there is increasing knowledge that NVs are responsible for many acute gastroenteritis outbreaks in Argentina, studies to estimate prevalence in sporadic cases are scarce.
Methods: A descriptive, observational and cross-sectional study was conducted with children under 5 years with acute gastroenteritis attending the outpatient department at the "Ricardo Gutiérrez" Children's Hospital (RGCH) in Buenos Aires City between June 2017 and June 2021.

Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is a tumor associated virus that modulates not only the infected cells but also innate and adaptive immunity. Macrophages play a key role in tumor development and progression. Particularly, the M2 phenotype (CD163) with anti-inflammatory activity contributes to a favorable microenvironment for tumor development while the M1 (CD68) proinflammatory phenotype contributes to a restrictive one.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common condition among patients in intensive care units (ICUs) and is associated with high numbers of deaths. Kidney replacement therapy (KRT) is a blood purification technique used to treat the most severe forms of AKI. The optimal time to initiate KRT so as to improve clinical outcomes remains uncertain.

In pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), the inability of the cytotoxic microenvironment induced by EBV presence to eliminate tumor cells could reflect the fact that the virus might be able to induce the expression of exhaustion markers to evade an immune response. Therefore, the expression of exhaustion markers in pediatric EBV-associated HL was evaluated. A balance between cytotoxic GrB and Th1 Tbet markers with regulatory Foxp3 was proved in EBV+ cases.

Macrophage activation plays a key role in liver disease progression. Soluble CD163 (sCD163) is a specific macrophage activation biomarker useful for clinical estimating damage severity and predicting outcome in different liver conditions. sCD163 performance as a non-invasive marker of liver damage was evaluated in plasma samples at time of biopsy in 120 patients with different hepatic conditions (56 HCV, 20 HCV/HIV, 10 HBV and 34 MAFLD).

High-risk human papillomaviruses (HR-HPVs) are the etiological agents of cervical cancer. However, a low proportion of HR-HPV-infected women finally develop this cancer, which suggests the involvement of additional cofactors. Epstein−Barr virus (EBV) has been detected in cervical squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) as well as in low- (LSIL) and high-grade (HSIL) squamous intraepithelial lesions, although its role is unknown.

Introduction: The community mitigation measures taken because of the COVID-19 pandemic had side effects on the circulation of the most frequent respiratory viruses during 2020. In the case of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), an important paediatric pathogen, a decrease in the number of cases and delayed outbreaks was previously described.
Aim And Methods: The genetic characteristics of the RSV circulating strains in paediatric patients in Buenos Aires, Argentina before and during the COVID-19 pandemic were studied.
